Is humanism the main message of the quran?

Peace all. Dr shabbir,in his quran exposition/translation,states that the central message of the quran is to; 'Serve god by serving humanity'.
I also feel that the fundamental benefit of the quran is its call to justice,and morality towards mankind...
I have two seperate questions with regard to this topic;

Do members of the forum think that the overall message of the quran is,'humanism',justice and morality?
What do members make of 'humanism' itself as an ideology?

I believe it is not just for humanism but for nature altogether, land and sea and what lives on and in it, without breaking rules of justice and morality.

yes as sects are prohibited in islam it surely points to humanism.

The topics Taj has been adding are actually included in humanism, in the sens of sustainability.

Now, please don't make an ideology of it - sounds to much like religion to me. Just live by it, the more we will be, the better the world.

Peace Elke and Taj. Yes,you are very right taj,it should include nature and the environment too.(which humnaism does endorse,as elke also stated.)
And yes elke,you are also very right...its not really an ideology,but a 'peaceful'/happy/responsible way to live...

'Humanism' has a variety of meanings

1.A system of thought that centers on humans and their values, capacities, and worth.
2.Concern with the interests, needs, and welfare of humans ?the newest flower on the vine of corporate humanism? (Savvy).
3.Medicine. The concept that concern for human interests, values, and dignity is of the utmost importance to the care of the sick.
4.The study of the humanities; learning in the liberal arts.
5.Humanism A cultural and intellectual movement of the Renaissance that emphasized secular concerns as a result of the rediscovery and study of the literature, art, and civilization of ancient Greece and Rome.

Al-quraan only proposes 'humanism' insofar as you take 'humanism' to be 'the end goal of the struggle where the human potential is actualised according to the human being. Al-quraan does not propose that 'man becomes the measure of all things' (that's the origin of humanism as per Protagoras's dictum).

To address your questions

No. The overall message of Al-quraan cannot be limited thus, I feel. I prefer to say al-quraan says what it says and yes, a take on it (as opposed to an absolutist formula as you proposed above) is that it promotes 'humanism, justice and morality' (insofar as it defines the three and doesn't depend on any source)

What do members make of 'humanism' itself as an ideology?

Anything coming from a being so fickle must be fickle as well. Check out Post-modernism.

I think the main messages of this proclamation(quran) are "Waking up" and "change", as with all divine teachings. Until one wakes up, they cannot make SEE that they need to change.
