    Peace all

I'm sure there are a few who can answer this. I'm very curious. What does it really mean? I've heard people here say "my conscience is my guide," or even "i believe the conscience is the true God." Is this, in reality an absurd statement? Or is there more to it that I don't know? If anyone has any idea, please explain.

    Peace.

      Salaamun alaikum Openmind,

Al-quraan doesn't acknowledge these people as judging by their 'conscience' (as per the English word which carries positive connotations). Rather, these people are worshipping their 'hawaa'. Note that this word is in plural in 5/48 (ahwaa'ahum - their hawaas). The word 'hawaa' , in another form refers to being carried away by something (tahwaa) so you can get a feel by what it means to be judging by one's hawaa, don't you?

        Salaam OpenMind.

I like your question, here are my thoughts -

I believe that I am 'God-conscious', meaning that the belief/fear of God is so great in my life that it is a core fundamental to how I think and behave. In everyday situations of my life, my constant awareness of God influences my thoughts and actions.

At the most simple level, the quality of character I endeavour to sculpt in myself is fundamentally based on what I believe God approves of by the message contained in the Quran. This of course is an on-going endeavour as I progress through life and experience new situations which require different responses from me. Often enough, being God-conscious encourages me to the best thoughts and actions, however as we are fallible human beings it is inevitable that we fail in some circumstances. Fortunately we all have the option of repentance and forgiveness.

Being 'God-conscious' helped me become 'Quran alone'. Although I knew I was going against everything I was being told by self-righteous traditionalists, because I knew in my heart that I was truly seeking God's approval by being honest with myself and finally reading the Quran like I should have done many years ago, I felt contented with my decision on an intellectual and emotional level.

        Peace,

        Stitch

mquran, what people are you talking about? I didn't understand what you're saying.

Openmind, your conscience is that voice in your head telling you to do what's right. We all have a conscience, but some people choose not to follow it.

          peace

Peace phoenix You are right; that is our conscience. But is our conscience equal to God himself? Or is our conscience a tool God has given us to innately distinguish between right and wrong; a furqan in and of itself, much like the Qur'an?

Peace be upon you Open Mind,

My position requires you to sit in a quiet place, close your eyes and just WITNESS. Watch your thoughts and images come and go and you will realize that - 1) You are NOT your thoughts and images 2) You are not in control of selecting which thoughts and images come (even though you can take control of that). The "I" is not the body, not the emotions, not the thoughts, not the images, etc. All of these things are PERCIEVED by CONSCIOUSNESS, which ITSELF cannot be percieved, it belongs to the GHAYB/UNSEEN.

I repeat, there is a part of your being that percieves but itself cannot be percieved, and that is what we shyould refer to when we say "I". As we go throough life, there is a prt of us that always changes (emotions, likes, dislikes, thoughts, beliefs, etc), and there is a part that NEVER CHANGES, that part is the SEER, CONSIOUCNESS. We are THAT which grasps thoughts, images and sensations.

Just as with Energy, which is ONE and we all share in that energy (proven by breaking all atoms down to thier lowest level), CONSCIOUSNESS is ONE also, manifest through he different created vehicles giving it different expression. Just liek a pure light shining through different colored windows. When flowing through teh red window pane, other colors will be filtered out and therefore restrict it in regards to that vehicle.

Lastly, it must be made clear that Consciousness is not a property of the "mind". You are not consious , you are CONSIOUSNESS ITSELF! ) The Mind is only a TOOL for consciousness.

God is closer to us than the jugular vein.

'people' here are those who claim to judge by their 'conscience' without verification from The Criterion

That's very interesting. You actually have much substance (unlike some), and very profound substance at that. )

But I didn't see if you consider the conscience as a guide or even God. Is there an implication i'm missing or anything? Sorry for being slow -\

Again, very interesting post. I look forward to reading more.

                        Peace
