In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

I collected the following verses and Ahadith that apparently suggest that the Sun and the Moon are revolving around the spherical earth, which is fixed and not rotating

The Sun and the Moon have orbits

And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.

It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).

    The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly) computed;

And He hath made subject to you the sun and the moon, both diligently pursuing their courses; and the night and the day hath he (also) made subject to you.

Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; is firmly established on the throne (of authority); He has subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law)! Each one runs (its course) for a term appointed. He doth regulate all affairs, explaining the signs in detail, that ye may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord.

He merges Night into Day, and he merges Day into Night, and he has subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law) each one runs its course for a term appointed. Such is Allah your Lord to Him belongs all Dominion. And those whom ye invoke besides Him have not the least power.

Seest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day and he merges Day into Night; that He has subjected the sun, and the moon (to his Law), each running its course for a term appointed; and that Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do?

He created the heavens and the earth in true (proportions) He makes the Night overlap the Day, and the Day overlap the Night He has subjected the sun and the moon (to His law) Each one follows a course for a time appointed. Is not He the Exalted in Power - He Who forgives again and again?

It is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon all (the celestial bodies) swim along, each in its rounded course.

If indeed thou ask them who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law), they will certainly reply, "Allah". How are they then deluded away (from the truth)?

Hast thou not Turned thy vision to one who disputed with Abraham About his Lord, because Allah had granted him power? Abraham said "My Lord is He Who Giveth life and death." He said "I give life and death". Said Abraham "But it is Allah that causeth the sun to rise from the east Do thou then cause him to rise from the West." Thus was he confounded who (in arrogance) rejected faith. Nor doth Allah Give guidance to a people unjust.

Thou wouldst have seen the sun, when it rose, declining to the right from their Cave, and when it set, turning away from them to the left, while they lay in the open space in the midst of the Cave. Such are among the Signs of Allah He whom Allah, guides is rightly guided; but he whom Allah leaves to stray,- for him wilt thou find no protector to lead him to the Right Way.

    The Earth is fixed

"And among His Signs is this, that heaven and earth stand by His Command then when He calls you, by a single call, from the earth, behold, ye (straightway) come forth."

"It is Allah Who sustains the heavens and the earth, lest they cease (to function) and if they should fail, there is none - not one - can sustain them thereafter Verily He is Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving."

"Or, Who has made the earth firm to live in; made rivers in its midst; set thereon mountains immovable; and made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing water? (can there be another) god besides Allah? Nay, most of them know not."

"He created the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; He set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and He scattered through it beasts of all kinds. We send down rain from the sky, and produce on the earth every kind of noble creature, in pairs."

"Who has made the earth your couch, and the heavens your canopy; and sent down rain from the heavens; and brought forth therewith Fruits for your sustenance; then set not up rivals unto Allah when ye know (the truth)."

"And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and rivers and roads; that ye may guide yourselves;"

The Sun has a setting place

"When he reached the setting place of the Sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring and found a people thereabout. We said 'O Dhul-Qarneyn! Either punish or show them kindness"

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) one day said Do you know where the sun goes? They replied Allah and His Apostle know best. He (the Holy Prophet) observed Verily it (the sun) glides till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it falls prostrate and remains there until it is asked Rise up and go to the place whence you came, and it goes back and continues emerging out from its rising place and then glides till it reaches its place of rest under the Throne and falls prostrate and remains in that state until it is asked Rise up and return to the place whence you came, and it returns and emerges out from it rising place and the it glides (in such a normal way) that the people do not discern anything ( unusual in it) till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it would be said to it Rise up and emerge out from the place of your setting, and it will rise from the place of its setting. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said. Do you know when it would happen? It would happen at the time when faith will not benefit one who has not previously believed or has derived no good from the faith (615.

Abu Dharr reported I asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) the (implication of the) words of Allah, the Exalted The sun glides to its appointed resting place. He replied Its appointed resting place is under the Throne.

Narrated Abu Dhar The Prophet asked me at sunset, "Do you know where the sun goes (at the time of sunset)?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He said, "It goes (i.e. travels) till it prostrates Itself underneath the Throne and takes the permission to rise again, and it is permitted and then (a time will come when) it will be about to prostrate itself but its prostration will not be accepted, and it will ask permission to go on its course but it will not be permitted, but it will be ordered to return whence it has come and so it will rise in the west. And that is the interpretation of the Statement of Allah "And the sun Runs its fixed course For a term (decreed). that is The Decree of (Allah) The Exalted in Might, The All-Knowing." (36.3

Narrated Abu Dharr Once I was with the Prophet in the mosque at the time of sunset. The Prophet said, "O Abu Dharr! Do you know where the sun sets?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know best." He said, "It goes and prostrates underneath (Allah's) Throne; and that is Allah's Statement--
'And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (decreed). And that is the decree of All-Mighty, the All-Knowing....' (36.3

Narrated Abu Dharr I asked the Prophet about the Statement of Allah--
'And the sun runs on fixed course for a term (decreed), ' (36.3 He said, "Its course is underneath "Allah's Throne." (Prostration of Sun trees, stars. mentioned in Qur'an and Hadith does not mean like our prostration but it means that these objects are obedient to their Creator (Allah) and they obey for what they have been created for).

Narrated Abu Dharr I asked the Prophet regarding the Verse--'And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term decreed for it.' (36.2 He said, "Its fixed course is underneath Allah's Throne."

Proof that the Earth is not rotating

The heliocentric model of the universe (sun being center) was adopted by the scientists and astronomers to make it easier for them to understand the motion of the planets in the solar system in relation to the sun. However, it is a fact that this motion is only relative. For example, a person standing at a train station will see the train moving past him. Yet a person sitting inside the train will see the train station moving past him.

I have read other theories about the amount of gravity that is required for the earth to be at the center in comparison to it's size and mass etc. However, all these are just theories invented by men which are not proven facts!

A simple proof that the earth is standing still and not rotating is by examining the motion of a projectile. For example, if I throw a heavy stone straight up in the air, then if the earth was rotating towards the east, the stone should fall towards the west from where I'm standing. The earth is rotating at a speed of 1670km/hr towards the east at the equator. So you can imagine how far the stone must land in the west by the time it completes it's motion. I am aware that the stone is given an intitial horizontal velocity too towards the east and that the motion of the projectile must obey the following equations that I learnt in my Advanced Physics and Mathematics courses

    Vertical motion y = u sin.t - (1/2)gt^2
    Horizontal motion x = u cos.t

However, this velocity cannot remain exactly at 1670km/hr throughout the motion of the projectile due to the air resistance and turbulance. The stone HAS to fall in the west if the earth was rotating. BUT it doesn't!!! It falls right at the place where you threw it from. Thus proving that the earth is motionless and NOT rotating.

    Reason

Doesn't it make you think, why would Allah (swt) choose the sun as the center? What is so special about it apart from the fact that it gives light, but so do other stars why aren't they the center of the universe? Why does Allah (swt) mention the orbit of the sun again and again in relation to the change of night and day?

I have learnt that the Holy Ka'ba in Makkah is the closest point on earth to the 'Arsh (Throne) of Allah (swt). This is the reason why we face towards it when we offer our five compulsory daily prayers and also circumambulate it when we go to the pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah

Behold! We gave the site, to Abraham, of the (Sacred) House, (saying) "Associate not anything (in worship) with Me; and sanctify My House for those who compass it round, or stand up, or bow, or prostrate themselves (therein in prayer).

I am not associating the Holy Ka'ba in Makkak with the Throne of Allah (swt). The Throne of Allah (swt) is something spiritual and something that our minds cannot comprehend. I am only saying that the Holy Ka'ba is the closest place on earth to the Throne of Allah (swt). Here are some verses about this Divine Throne of Allah (swt)

Allah! There is no god but He,- the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory).

Those who sustain the Throne (of Allah) and those around it Sing Glory and Praise to their Lord; believe in Him; and implore Forgiveness for those who believe "Our Lord! Thy Reach is over all things, in Mercy and Knowledge. Forgive, then, those who turn in Repentance, and follow Thy Path; and preserve them from the Penalty of the Blazing Fire! And grant, our Lord! that they enter the Gardens of Eternity, which Thou hast promised to them, and to the righteous among their fathers, their wives, and their posterity! For Thou art (He), the Exalted in Might, Full of Wisdom. And preserve them from (all) ills; and any whom Thou dost preserve from ills that Day,- on them wilt Thou have bestowed Mercy indeed and that will be truly (for them) the highest Achievement."

And thou wilt see the angels surrounding the Throne (Divine) on all sides, singing Glory and Praise to their Lord. The Decision between them (at Judgment) will be in (perfect) justice, and the cry (on all sides) will be, "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!"

    Allahu 'Alam (Allah knows best).

This, my friends, is where literalism takes us. But of course, this is a bit extreme.

I think this obsession people are having (and this is a pattern through the ages on the board) about literal vs. symbolic is getting irritating. I did not need to read PrinceZed's posts either. It can be easily seen that the verses that suggest the earth is not rotating are anything but, so why repost it? This is not a case of literalism taken to the extreme, this is a case of stupidity taken to the extreme.

        Peace.

okay, I apologize. This wasn't necessary.
But the article is definitely funny. You just can't not laugh when you read it.

Ahmed, no need to refute any arguments. This was not mine, but someone else's (out dated) view of the universe based on the literal (hadithified) interpretaton of the Quranic verses. That's all.

            As salamu alaykum.
            Respectfully. jedi

I just got something in my head.
Imagine that i throw a frisbee. On top of the frisbee are the sun, all the planets and their moons. Now let's say that you watch this from a distance. If you are watching the flying frisbee, you can see that everything on the frisbee is rotating. Everything.

Is it possible that if we exited the Milky Way, that we would see the sun rotating? I mean, it's just a question, i hope people with more knowledge about this will know more.

            As salamu alaykum. jedi

              Peace phoenix,

True it is hilarious but you could post a link next time on whichever thread you might wish to make a point Besides, reading his stuff brings to mind those pictures he posted once upon a time...saying 'even our saints are alive!!' or something to that effect. I still can't get it out of mind hypno

Then why did a scientist like Maurice Bucaille found no contradiction between the Quran and Science.
Also notice that in translations of Quran after some words there are brackets to sort of clarify the meaning of the word, we have to be careful about this, the Quran must be understood from the original arabic and using the quran itself as self-reference.
All ayats about the earth in the Quran point out to the earth being round, following a different course from the sun. with the sun following a course in itself. Also what is amazing is that the arabs of those days believed only in the earth the moon the sun and the stars, they thought other planets were also stars. The Quran distinguished between stars and planets by using a word they never use to refer to "heavenly" bodies and this is KAUKAB which is a round ball. Also it referred to the sun as siraj uahajj which means not solid but with its composition in continual flares/flux.
I have never said I wa not a symbolist (I like philosophy, poetry, literature etc), but Allah is the Creator of All Worlds, and I believe He also gave reality to symbols to make even a more potent point.
I come back to the fact that in those days magic was very widespread and believed in. In our day and age we became skeptical of it, as now it is technology that is widely believed in. But neither technology nor magic can solve everything. Please dont now tell me if I believe in magic... Magic use is unlawful to me as is incantation to bring about a Jinn. And yes some people even today can do that, if you are really bored and want to see, go to some gurus in India or shaman in South America for a demonstration, a friend of mine did...

                  Ok bro now I understand

but the quran never suggested that the sun rotates around the staionary earth, neither the quran said the earth does not move, so I wonder how they came up with these lies?

                    peace,

has science confirmed that the sun is a sitting duck? how do we know that for sure... isn't everything relative from the point of perception we choose? but it is true indeed that the earth revolves around the sun and the moon revolves around the earth.

                    peace, rifat

The sun rotates, it also revolves around something. Probably another larger star. Everything is moving since and because of the Big Bang. Which law of motion was that?

I am not an astronomer, but if I remember well from my readings in scientific american, the sun and the other stars in our galaxy revolve around the centre of our galaxy which is speculated to be a black hole... The Quran says that the sun follows a determined path... Gravitation Law

I think there are more black holes in the universe, and things probably do revolve around them. The sun might be "indirectly" revolving around one (it is revolving around something that is revolving around something that is revolving around a black hole).

excuse me bro, what are you going on about exactly?

hmmm, forget all that, let's talk what is confirmed

our galaxy has something in the centre called black hole, something you don't see because you can't. now all the objects of the galaxy rotates around that black hole in the centre

and because the sun is an object in that galaxy then it moves

and that is what the quran told us exactly

                            cheers

it is not specuateld now man, it is confirmed , they can messure all the physical effects of a blackhole while not seeing it, in fact I have seen enhanced "not true color" images for many black holes including the one in our galaxy centre

I can speculate and say I believe the black holes are the cemetries of the universe, and this is where the souls are held after death till the judgment day, this is a clear cut specualtion and possibly conjectures as well, LOL

Not only does the sun revolves around the centre of our galaxy, but our whole galaxy is moving away from other galaxies according to Hubble's Law and the Big Bang expansion, they are supposed then to reach a limit of expansion, and then the big bang will reverse itself with all the universe shrinking back to a discontinuity as it started.
This is the latest theory derived from latest measurements and modelling in astronomy / spectroscopy / particle physics. i am quoting from memory, it is not my field, I worked in Quantum Chemistry...

There are still some astronomers who do not believe in black holes as they are currently described, some think also they are portals to other universes...

PS Also the latest discoveries of dark matter is very exciting, this can be what Allah said in the Quran that He holds this Universe with Pillars we cannot see,,,

yeh bro and I'm one of those who believes in that too but I think you mean the worm holes?

i'm into all these sort of things sisnce i was young, I actually studied it a bit at usin as part of the civil engineering studies at the first two years at uni

I have loads of books in astronomy and I love it

Exactly and I'm one who also believe as such, however all these things won't affect our belief because what we are trying to discover is how awesome Allah made the universe, in fact the Quran encourages us to do so, ironically most scientists who discover these things don't believe, therefore the people with knowledge mentioned in the Quran "Rasikhoon Fi Al Ilm" are those who are knowledegable in knowing Allah not really science

                                    Peace

The test for those who are bright is that they say they get wht they have using their knowledge (such as Quaroon)
