Women In Paradise
-
Salam Al-Khidr, all,
The verb "yathmeth'huna" literally applies to women when their virginity (hymen) is taken away. How would you then reconciale thess verses with your article? the only possibility would be to consider those verses "allegories". And God the All-Mighty knows best.
Salaam and peace Myr ..
As mentioned in brother Al-Khidr's article, most verses do not refer to genders, except a few. There are just some verses that might hint specifically on female companions(and some also specifically on male companions). But even in regard to these verses, the reference to virginity or hymen being preserved is only symbolic of their distinct & eternal purity that makes them different from earthly companions. It does not refer to the 'charms' of a physical relationship involving sex and procreation. To my understanding, that's clearly not the sense portayed concerning companionships in any of the verses. And of course, as stated in the article, majority of the companionships mentioned in the Qur'aan do not refer to any genders at all.
And only Allah knows best ..

Salam Al-Khidr,

.........
You have said this"I have no doubt that God is All Merciful All-Just and Fair toward all HIS servants. Women will enjoy pure mates the same way like men, even in this life, we are given the same freedom to enjoy life with mates like men and as long as it is within the boundaries set by the All-Mighty but still in the Quran the emphasis on sexual pleasure for men is clearly outlined-) but again and God the All-Mighty knows best. Peace. Myr."
I want to highlight your statement, "but still in the Quran the emphasis on sexual pleasure for men is clearly outlined-)", could you please share those versed in the Qur'aan with me that emphasize sexual pleasure for men that is clearly outlined as you have commented?
Salaam
One of the verses that really make a lot of women (muslim and non-muslim) jump when they read it is verse 2223. It is clearly addressed to men -) and the example is strong. For me it is not an issue as I submit to the All-Mighty and I have no problem to give myself to my beloved if any, in all the senses this verse may imply but nevertheless, it remains that men are given the greenlight here-).
There are other verses such as the ones dealing with the prophet and his relation with his wives. He was given the green light to please whom he wanted among his wives and dismiss whom he wanted among them, in othe words, he had the upper hand or control on their sexuality and since the prophet is set as an example in Quran, so one would always expect men to take those verses literally and unfortuanately a lot do-). Of course I am not saying the prophet had to be forced too because the couple relation in Quran is described as a mutual give&take thing in affection and mercy between the spouses but again nevertheless, the "initiative" is given to the man first. It is difficult to consider all those verses gender neutral-).
Having said that, I totally believe there must be a very good reason why things have been set the way they are in Quran and inchallah one day soon I will be able to see that better-)-). Peace. Myr. -

Salam Zainab,
I understand and agree with Brother Al-Khidr on the fact that most verses do not refer to any gender but still many things in the hereafter are detailed to us in the Quran in an "earthly" language and in a way that people mind can make sense of what may await them in the hereafter. The pleasure of food in the hereafter is explained with earthly examples given and in a way that people can actually "picture" how it would more or less be, the pleasure of having dwellings, furniture, luxury clothes in the hereafer are all described in terms of what we actually are or may experience, the same goes with the pleasure of having a mate that nobody touched and that desires you exclusively, the pleasure of seing children or "youth" around you, etc. and yet we are reminded in the Quran that despite these descriptions, those in the higher ranks in the hereafter wouldnot be able to imagine what is reserved to them in reward and what their eyes will see.
My point Sister is that there is a parallel beteween the life and the hereafter and thus it is difficult to get rid of the gender in all verses-). The pleasures in this life are a prototype or a sort of "aperitif" to the pleasures in the hereafter for those lucky who are going to make it-) and Quran gives us real current examples because indeed who does not want to enjoy food, youth, sex with a pure mate, dwellings, luxury clothes, etc.? verses stressing mates that nobody whether Jinns or inns touched (or more precisely nobody took away their "viginity" actually refer to what most of people will like in the hereafter but also want in this life and therefore the gender can not be ignored.
Let's wait for Al-Khidr's explanation on that verse in particular and inchallah I will be able to see better-)
Thank you for your message. Peace. Myr. -

Thank you for your message. Peace. Myr.Wa Salaam dear Myr ..
I understand your point which is very valid. The Glorious Qur'aan mentions many of those heavenly comforts & joys that will be reminiscent of those on earth to the righteous in a more rapturous degree.
"And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) unto those who believe and do good works; that theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow; as often as they are regaled with food of the fruit thereof, they say This is what was given us aforetime; and it is given to them in resemblance. There for them are pure companions; there for ever they abide." (225)
However, despite the similarities of the pleasures in earth and Paradise, there's also very distinctly the concept of a 'dividing line' between the two e.g. temporary & eternal, negative personal feelings toward each other & none, eating to satisfy the pangs of hunger & eating for pleasure and so on respectively. Similarly, another one of such differences include the personal relationships between men and women, and for that matter also between men & men and women & women. The similarity goes as far as appreciating the pleasure of each others' presence, pleasant conversations and the atmosphere it creates. But unlike earth, where relationships and the law of marriage is necessary to continue the process of birth and thus, the proliferation of the human race is something that won't be required in Paradise. Besides, the existence in Paradise will apparently will be a spiritual one to a much larger extent (if not entirely), not a physical one. So it has to bring about a some marked differences regarding human instincts, particularly those pertaining to lust, lewdness and the lower physical pleasures of earthly life. This is my opinion which has always fallen in place with my perception. Surely it will be very nice to get brother al-Khidr's intelligent comments.
And only Allah knows the final truth.

One of the verses that really make a lot of women (muslim and non-muslim) jump when they read it is verse 2223. It is clearly addressed to men -)
isn't the Quran being narrated to a MAN?
For example if Jibreel was narrating this to muhammad, the OTHER way, it'd say
2223 Your men are a cultivation for you. So approach your cultivation as you wish towards goodness. And be aware of God and know that you will meet Him, and give good news to the believers. D
This verse is ONLY laying the ground-work for 'bedroom manners'.
To me there are loads of verses that treat women and men equal. 3195, 4124, 4040, 4913, 1697, 3335, 1657-59,
also this verse shows that Muhammad was respectful towards women
581 God has heard the woman who has argued with you regarding her husband, and she complained to God. And God hears the argument between you. God is Hearer, Seer.
If it's one-sided, there's no argument !

Salaams to all ..
With regard to Verse 2223 .. yes it is for men just as several verses are also for women, and personally I see nothing wrong with that.
However, I think, in regard to the original post, discussing this verse would be stepping outside the main topic. The original post specifically pertains to relationships in Paradise whereas Verse 2223 is about husband/wife relationship in this world. Also verses concerning the Prophet's relationship with his wives are references to earthly life and pretty much out of topic.
However, Allah does not at all give the Prophet the permission to dismiss whichever wife the Prophets wants. It's easier to follow when one analyses this issue in a realistic light. Unlike his life in Makkah, in Medina the Prophet had a polygamous marriage. The Qur'aan mentions to all men involved in polygamous marriages, including the Prophet, that no matter how hard they try, it will not be humanly possible for them to treat all their wives 'equally.' It is but natural that in such a situation, for one reason or the other, the husband will end up spending a little more time with one unit of his family and lesser time with another. But it is of utmost importance not to quit the other or others altogether, and try as best as they can to maintain the balance. This is the basic concept, and I think it's much the opposite of what some people conclude. The Qur'aan refers that the believers (the Prophet included) are not to quit one wife for another for superficial reasons. One of the very important purposes of marriage according to the Qur'aan is to give security to the woman. No woman would ever be secure if she could be dismissed any time by her husband. And the Prophet's life itself is the clearest example that he never did that. Though, needless to say, there have been men in all eras of history who have grossly misconstrewed the Quraanic values with personal motives. That's a different matter.
However .. I'd rather not waver from the main topic, which is, Paradise is not some kind of 'exotic picnic just for men,' a ridiculous violation that's been propagated by certain radical Muslims and various feminist groups for too long. The very truth about the flawlessness of Divine Justice is sufficient ground to discard such absurd notions.

May I also add that what will certainly not be present in Paradise is lust.Very true. This was precisely the aspect I was trying to highlight in some of my replies on this thread.

Respectfully.Me and my brother have this topic we talk about a lot. What about sex in Paradise? I mean, if my wife makes it there with me (future tense, i'm not married yet), will i still have acces to those virgins in Paradise along with my wife and will my wife be O.K. with that, what will she say?
I mean, if anyone knows anything about this, i'dlove to hear a comeback.
Thanks.

As salamu alaykum. jediWalaikum Salaam dear brother Alen ..
While only Allah knows best, according to my perception I've already underscored this aspect in all my responses on this thread that there will be no earthly lust in Paradise, which automatically means that meetings and relationships in the next world do not involve that craving nor desire for sexual physical pleasure. As human beings, this might be hard to understand for some who being so used to the 'wordly set-up' are unable to envision the realities of a higher existence. But that is the reality. Life after life in Paradise does have some similarities with life on earth in terms of certain pleasant surroundings. But also, the differences concerning certain pleasures are much greater. If we are fortunate enough to enter Paradise (Allah Willing), we and our loved ones might be spending much time in the company of each other and also with a many sweet & wonderful hosts of that heavenly place. Having said this, I don't think your future wife would have any problems if you too spent sometime in their company and vice-versa. To my understanding, this is what Allah means when He mentions that He will remove all "rancour" from the hearts of the righteous who enter Paradise.

Respectfully.Thank you, sister zainab, beautiful post, thanks for the answer. sun
Humans are too use to this life so soemtimes it is hard to let go the format of this life and world. We have no idea what Paradise will be like, i mean the very existance in it.P.S.You can come talk to me and sister Latifah on MSN, if you want to.
May Allah rewards you with Paradise, sister.

As Salaamu Alaykum Myr
You have said the following
?Good article masha Allah. Inchallah many blessings for your effort. I have few comments based on the Quran about this issue of women in paradise-). I understand you are using a different translation but in the arabic verses, it is clearly about a "feminine" form of a sort of "gender" and this is what gives the impression that those verses address men and exclude women. For instance, the verb "yathmeth'huna" (to my understanding wrongly translated as touched) appears only in verses 5556 and 5574 and it is different from the verb "lamass'tuna al-nissa" (touched the women) that we see in other verses. The verb "yathmeth'huna" literally applies to women when their virginity (hymen) is taken away. How would you then reconciale thess verses with your article? the only possibility would be to consider those verses "allegories". And God the All-Mighty knows best.
I have no doubt that God is All Merciful All-Just and Fair toward all HIS servants. Peace. Myr."
I think one of the misunderstandings that you may have in regards to those verses and my article was the fact that you possibly interpret 5556 and 5574 literally? I believe that you have mistakenly interpreted those verses with literal sexual connotations. The passages that are in that Sura are allegorical descriptions of Paradise (Jannah). Please read Qur?aan 5542-77 and it would be very much clear that Allah is using a lot of allegorical descriptions of Paradise but again those passages are not to be taken literally and that includes the sexual connotations that you misinterpreted with 5556 and 5574.
We have to keep in the frame of mind that the Spiritual Kingdom (Heaven) is a reality that is beyond our comprehension while we are here in the physical realm (the planet earth). All what we know on the physical realm or plane will be in no form or fashion in comparison to what awaits us in Paradise and that also includes the sexual functions/desires/acts that we as humans know on earth. Look at the indication that Allah gives us to demonstrate that Jannah (Heaven) is beyond our comprehension for us humans who only knows what is in the physical universe
Qur?aan 3217
And no human being can imagine what blissful delights, as yet hidden, await them as a reward for all that they do.I have attempted to constantly remind the reader in my article of this because it is easy for the mind of the human being to confuse the two. In one respect the physical realm is all we know and because of that its easy for the human to transcend the two abodes (physical & Spiritual) and interpret those two separate realities as one or the same or mix them together.
Allah knows that since we (humans) have not been to Heaven yet, we cannot fully understand and comprehend so Allah sometimes in the Holy Qur?aan has to use physical things such as allegories, similies, metaphors to describe Jannah to help us humans get an inclination of what Heaven is. Note these things (the physical descriptions that are used as allegories in Al Qur?aan) are NOT to be taken literally in Jannah (Heaven), nor can they be equal in comparison to what awaits us in Jannah (Heaven). Allah uses allegories to relay a message of piety, Spiritual Blessings, principals, lessons, understanding, etc.
Qur?aan 37
He revealed to you this scripture; some of its verses are decisive (literal)-consisting of straightforward verses, which are the essence of the scripture, as well as allegorical (symbolic) verses. So as for those in whose hearts is perversity, will pursue the allegorical verses to create confusion, and to seek different meanings. No one knows their true meaning except Allah and those who possess knowledge. They say, ?We believe in this, for it all comes from our Sustainer.? And none will grasp the message except men of clear understanding. The Holy Qur?aan is a Divine revelation that consists of decisive (literal) verses and allegorical (symbolic) verses. Allah also says that He does not shy away from citing any kind of allegory.
Qur?aan 226
Allah does not shy away from citing any kind of allegory, from the tiny mosquito and greater. Those who believed know that this is the truth from their Lord, while those who disbelieved say, ?What did Allah mean by such an allegory?? Many does He adjudge to be erring because of these (allegories) and many does He guide through them. Yet it is only the wicked whom He adjudges to be erring because of them,So to conclude Myr there were no contradiction or anything to resolve in terms of those verses that you highlighted and my article. In 5556,74 does not in no way possess literal sexual connotations.
Salaam

Alhmdulillah Zainab for your explainaton below and especially when you highlighted this point
the reference to virginity or hymen being preserved is only symbolic of their distinct & eternal purity that makes them different from earthly companions. It does not refer to the 'charms' of a physical relationship involving sex and procreation. To my understanding, that's clearly not the sense portayed concerning companionships in any of the verses.
I fully agree with your analysis. Its symbolic (allegorical) language and since the human beings only knows his reality which is on the physical plane or universe, its easy for us to mix and confuse the two states of existence SPIRITUAL & PHYSICAL. Both states of existence are built and governed by seperate LAWS created by Allah, The Most Exalted and there is nothing in the physical realm (the planet earth) that could be in any shape or form in comarison to Paradise (Jannah or Heaven) that waits us and that definately includes all dimensions of sex in the manner that we human beings perceive on earth.
Salam Al-Khidr, all,

You have said the following in regards to 2223
?There are other verses such as the ones dealing with the prophet and his relation with his wives. You have said this
?It is difficult to consider all those verses gender neutral-).?
My article was based on the allegorical descriptions in Paradise and you have mistakenly clumped 2223 with the points that I was addressing in the article. This verse here 2223 and the subject matter of my article are to different notions stemming from two separate states of existence Physical & Spiritual. This verse is simply saying that its fine to have a sexual relationship with our spouse and that is something natural that Allah has created for us to partake in. Note, this verse is not indicating that a man can have the ?green light? to sexually have a woman when ever he likes or do with a women in a sexual fashion when ever he likes. I personally think that your interpretation of 2223 is your innovation. When you use the word ?green light? in regards to a man doing what ever he pleases and when ever he wants is conveying a different tone that is not expressed in 2223. That expression and how you used it in English conveys a different underlining meaning then what is naturally expressed by Allah in 2223. It?s a good thing that Allah has announced in Al Qur?aan that it?s fine to have sexual relations with your wives, especially when unnatural sexual acts such as homosexuality, rape, sexual abuse exist which is not supported in Islaam.
Now let?s take look at this verse carefully
Qur?aan 2223
Your women are the bearers of your seed. Thus, you may enjoy them however you wish, so long as you maintain righteousness. You shall observe Allah, and know that you will ultimately meet Him. Give good news to the believers.Notice that Allah has ended with saying, ?so long as you maintain righteousness?. We all know what righteousness means, so no man cannot sexually abuse a woman and just have the green light to do what ever he see fit as though no woman has any say so etc..

Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding the prophet and his wives. Verse 3351 says
"You may gently shun any one of them, and you may bring closer to you any one of them. If you reconcile with any one you had estranged, you commit no error. In this way, they will be pleased, will have no grief, and will be content with what you equitably offer to all of them. GOD knows what is in your hearts. GOD is Omniscient, Clement.".
My question as commented by Myr is that why did God give the prophet the green light to do whatever he wanted with his wives. I am by no way disrespecting God's decision or the prophet, but if read from the point of view of today's modern person, doesn't what Myr said seem true - that God did give Muhammed the green light to do whatever he wanted with his wives? I am just wondering.
God be praised.
-
6012 O you prophet, if the believing women come to make allegiance to you that they will not set up anything beside God, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their unborn children, nor fabricate any falsehood, nor disobey you in any matter which is righteous, then you shall accept their allegiance, and ask God to forgive them. God is Forgiver, Merciful.
why did God give the prophet the green light to do whatever he wanted with his wives.
he wasn't given the green light to do whatever he wanted
(re-read 3350 and 3352, he is being told what is lawful for him) more he was being told what he was PERMITTED to do. 6012 clearly proves that no-one was to obey the prophet unconditionally. -

Remember Myr it was you who mentioned it in your first posting in this thread and I asked for those verses so that I can get a better understanding of your perception before I responded. I want to thank you for providing those verses, I just however commented on your points from your first post and so forth.
Now in regards to you not liking Zainab for addressing those groups who have strayed, should not be a problem at all. Why attemptd to control someone's tongue who has no fear and willing to speak the truth. Remember this forum is called "free-minds" and your desires (for what ever reasons) you do not like her expressing herself is in direct contradiction to the label and conept of "free-minds". If you did not like the statement Myr, with all due respect its personal and it should be left as personal because you have to keep in mind there are many many people out here who wants to hear an uncomprising TRUTH. There are many of us who learn that way. If we take the approach where we can't speak our mind and take positions etc., and just speak in a manner that makes every one happy, how can we actually grow, how can we actually learn spiritually and intellectually. What Zainab has commented on was very thought provoking, insightful and most of all true

But it is of utmost importance not to quit the other or others altogether, and try as best as they can to maintain the balance.
.............................................
The verse 3351 in Arabic clearly mentions "man tasha2ou" literally means "as you (the prophet or messenger) wish/want or the one (that is the wive) you (that is the prophet/messenger) wish/want".
Plus, we are not talking about quitting any wife but about men and sex or intimacy in Quran because Brother Al-Khidr wanted me to quote the verses following the comments I made in my FIRST message. The reasoning above is not consistent with the wisdom in Quran if I understand the above well, so because men are "weak" by nature (and of course not women), so in anticipation, the Quran gives an "ok" to dismiss one wife one night for another becasue of "reasons"... if that was the case, why therefore the verse was not extended to include all men? or was the prophet "weaker" than the rest of the men? or was he the only polygamous man? My point is let us not speculate too much when we are not yet able to understand the core wisdom in these verses and I am sure there is one good reason why the prophet was given that geen light specifically and not all the men because No doubt God is just and fair. You have said this
"but if you label people of feminist and radical muslims or of this and that, in order to advance your understanding of the truth, I would consider this an unhealthy debate and I would therefore prefer to withdraw from this debate."
This is exactly the point that I was trying to resectfully raise to you. That right there is basically your personal outlook on the matter but you have to keep in consideration that there are many otheres who wants to hear an uncrompromising truth. There are many others who do not look at it the way you have personally obsorbed her position by associating Zainab's statement with trying "to advance her understanding of truth" as you have commented. If you cannot dispute her position to be false how can you reduce it to 'labeling"? Frankly it is true that there are radical Muslim groups and feminist groups that has strayed from the truth of Allah and promote false notions. Zainab was not absolutely classifying every one on the planet, she was only addressiong a notion of truth which is relative to some groups/peoples/organizations/individuals/etc. etc. etc., Just because you may not like it does not make it wrong and again when we debate we need to break away from this act of 'personlizing' everything. In DEBATE controversy envelopes and things are not going be always said for the liking of everybody and that to is fine, it is part of the natural nature or law of DEBATE. But one thing some people has to understand is that every body is not always going to water down truth, their voice for the desires of some individuals.

Salam Brother Al-Khidr,
It has nothing to do about liking or not what Sister Zainab wrote. I think I clearly stated that everyone is entitled to his/her understanding of the issue raised, but if you label people of feminist and radical muslims or of this and that, in order to advance your understanding of the truth, I would consider this an unhealthy debate and I would therefore prefer to withdraw from this debate. I am very much interested in others understanding of verses but not in labels on people whose understanding seems to irritate you.
Ok Brother, I am done with this debate and thank you again for the exchange. Peace.Myr.

You have said
"it was you Brother Al-Khidr in reply to my first message who asked me to quote the verses that were addressed to men on sex."
If we take the approach where we can speak our mind and take positions etc., and just speak in a manner that makes every one happy, how can we actually grow, how can we actually learn spiritually and intellectually. What Zainab has commented on was very thought provoking, insightful and most of all true
"However .. I'd rather not waver from the main topic, which is, Paradise is not some kind of 'exotic picnic just for men,' a ridiculous violation that's been propagated by certain radical Muslims and various feminist groups for too long. The very truth about the flawlessness of Divine Justice is sufficient ground to discard such absurd notions."

Salam Al-Khidr, Zainab,
Salaam Zainab
Very beautiful insight of this subject matter and you have closed with a very powerful statement

For those who have interest in this thread its important to stay on topic. The subject of that article is "Women In Paradise"<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

The very truth about the flawlessness of Divine Justice is sufficient ground to discard such absurd notions.I know the subject was and is "women in Paradise". I had no intention to change the subject but just a reminder to you two that it was you Brother Al-Khidr in reply to my first message who asked me to quote the verses that were addressed to men on sex. That you have a different interpretation of the verses, I fully respect that and everyone is entitled to his or her undertanding of the verses to be allegorical or literal or even else, but please for the sake of the All-Mighty let us refrain from pointing at who is feminist and who is radical muslim but just debate the undertanding without labeling. I am fine with your understanding that all these verses are allegories. They are not for me and that should be fine for you so that we can move on without calling labels. Peace. Myr.
