Killing Flies

Here's what i do a fly arrives to our apartment, i catch it, relese it back where it came from. The fly gets the picture it is not welcomed in the apartment. The fly has been refused an entry visa to my apartment. rotfl rotflSame thing with bees. Well, i don't catch them, i just make enough wind and they fly away, they get the picture, bees are much smarter creations than we give them credit for. In the last few days, several bees are trying to establish a base under our bed on the balcony but my mother keeps killing them and i keep telling her that killing them is wrong. brickwall
Bees are not harmful, they want to help us, they are willing to collect honey all day long, despite the heat and bring it to us. They work for us. Drones work for us and their queen is giving orders to help us out. They don't want thanks or rewards. Just peace. peace peace
Other bugs and smaller animals also want cooperation from us. They leave us alone and we leave them alone. We don't have to kill them. That's why birds have the ability to fly - to run away from humans who not only kill each other but sometimes other species. D
Don't kill animals smaller than you. Yes, they can bring dirt into the houses where we live but that's a reminder that we don not keep clean our habitats. They're just looking for a place to live. yay

Every year in the summer for some strange reason we get centipedes. It's always when we have a door open that's next to this big tree. They are sooooo nasty looking!
I used to be afraid to kill it ... but now i'm immune voodoo
but any lightening bugs or lady bugs are too cute to kill lol
which is interesting to me ... cute things i have mercy on... like my family loves to eat rabbit and duck ... i on the other hand think they're too cute looking to eat - that it's somehow barbaric -
but i'll eat the heck out of a chicken Dstrannnnge how the mind works ... or ..well.. how my mind works ;D
i don't necessarily think killing a fly or mosquito to be wrong though ... bugs carry all kinds of nasty bacteria and disease

The only thing i always kill mercilessly is moskitos...
I love spiders and usually just leave them alone. But as my daughter fears them i catch them and take them to a safe place LOL...
Usually i let the flies live - as my cats take care of thembut a few days ago, the cats being too lazy, i went into a killing frenzy as well - there were just to many of them and they would not let me sleep...their mistake ! >

Yeah, I usually leave the spiders too, particularly because they catch the little critters that I don't. Plus, here in NJ, there aren't too many venomous household spiders. So, they're safe as long as they don't crawl into my bed or shoes. I don't know how I'd be if I lived in Australia though- something like 50 species of venomous spiders!

The ants are the hardest to deal with, as they start taking over they only grow in population. So, I try to make sure there aren't many temptations for them but this rarely puts them off, hence before the population grows too much I use ant powder. Also, they nest right in the middle of the lawn and this is a problem too. I feel really bad about this but no idea what else to do.
My choice is to chase the creature out if possible, if there are many it becomes impossible. Hence, I can't say I am consistent but I believe killing should be avoided if at all possible.

I have no hesitation in killing a mosquito... with my bare hands! muscle But I've been holding back when it comes to flies and other bugs. I'd rather just throw them out. And we're lucky, I guess, not to have ants.
I've also been trying to tell my kids not to kill bugs as they are living things. I'm not sure they entirely understand, but I guess they will in time. Bugs are always a fascination for kids.

i wonder why God created insects? he may not have created them physically but certainly it was part of his plan. I guess the chain of command? there's always someone higher/lower than us? also to help us stay clean ?any thoughts on that? sorry if this is offtopic

So, it's summertime, and someone left the front door open for a few hours. I'm on the pc when I hear the buzzing sound I dread. And there he is, landed right on the rim of my coffee cup. Bastard! I roll up a newspaper and whack 'em. Dead! Over the next 3 days, it would be a massacre. 20-30 fly corpses piled in the trash.
On the one hand, the flies are only doing what they were designed to do. But on the other, I have the right to protect my territory, just as a lion protects his territory from hyenas. But, sometimes, I do feel bad.
You thoughts?

TayWell, this is a very tough issue I have in my life, i used to kill them and other insects but for about 3 years now i felt the guilt because I could not be convinced that i have the right to take their lives, however i created a line for them, if they cross the line with me especially roches, they are dead, some insects like spiders i move them away if they cross the line, flyies are more smarter for me but all in all I always think twice now before killing insects, it is a huge feeling of guilt I get

When I was a boy, I use to shoot lizards, roaches with my airgun, and hit the flies n bees with tennis racket. Not anymore. Sometime ago a big bee (black with yellow spot on back) entered my room. First thought which came to my mind was, Allah help me, help him out. I was very very scared but was I managed holding it in my fist, (lots of buzzing) and relesed him out of the window. Now I think why didnt I used the newspaper or anything for tht )
I dont shoot on sight anymore but I agree with you, lion has to protect pride land from hyenas.

your bee story makes me think of something that happended to me a few weeks ago
A bird came into my appartment. Problem is i have two cats which were looking at it, salivating...
I talked to the bird, told it to follow me to another room, closed the door to block the cats and opened a window for it to fly away. Nothing special, but really, it seemed to understand me and was not panicking at all.
The bee in your hand also understood you wanted to help...
Crazy, i knew it worked with dogs for me but birds and bees...

In the world, animals have thier natural antagonists (not sure if that is the right word). But when they come into our homes then we must take over as the antagonist (unless its a mouse and you have a cat). However, if we can its probably best to spare them. With me, it depends on if my emotions get the best of me or not. Mosquitos can forget it because they attack and I cant stand those bites.
Thata always been a tough question for me.

Just when I thought it was over, atleast another 30 flies have been executed for trespassing. When will it end?
By the way, (and thanks Kyle for bringing this up) I realize that we have lots of blood, and mosquitoes have to eat too, so I wouldn't mind sharing my blood now and then. But why do they have to pump me full of poison, forcing me to itch like a maniac? And what's with the disease-smuggling? I give you some of my blood, and you give me malaria??
Do mosquitoes serve any purpose besides human population control?

I think we're all in agreement about the mosquito. So lets talk about the flies that have decided to invade your humble abode. Door/Window screens are really cool if you prefer to keep doors/windows open. Err... that's about the only thing I can think of right now. I'm not in favor of those blue light things that electrocute them. I've never been too bothered by flies for some reason, although I have a friend who would rather be attacked by mosquitos than flies. confused

It's definitely not a screen issue. I've narrowed it down to one of 2 possibilities. Either a female snuck in dropped off her army somewhere in my basement, or there's a small gap (breach) in one of my basement windows. Tomorrow I will break out the forensic kit and crack the case. I'll keep you posted. BTW, I'm not freaked out by flies or anything. I just don't want 65 of them in my home-office. Plus, all it takes is a second for a female to impant eggs into someone's food. That's not nice. I had one land in and die my morning coffee today - only 2 sips into it elektro
But, they are certainly very necessary to the ecosystem - in fact, vital. Flies are major players in the world of getting rid of rotting animal corpses. Their babies(maggots) are also used medicinally to remove rotten flesh from people without harming the good stuff - this because they ony eat the dead stuff. And of course, they are food themselves for a plethora of other insects and animals.
Oh yeah, how could I forget that they carry disease on one wing, and the cure on the other, so double dip'em in your morning tea (remember that escapade??)
