    I went out tonight (July 10th, 2006), witnessed it and took a few pictures

    Please remember that we are not looking for when the full moon precisely occur. We are looking for the day with the maximum percent illumination when the moon rises. This appearance of the red moon is what we are to witness. When I checked the data between Washington DC, London and Cairo, I found it highly consistent. Here is the data for all three cities for both July 10 and 11 (starting from the time the moon rises until midnight)

    Please notice that when the moon rises on July 10th it is consistently 100% illuminated in all three cities. The difference between 99% and 100% illumination is not that noticebale. However what is very noticeable in that on July 10th it consistently follows a lower path accross the horizon in all three cities and thus will appear redder (scorching) and more dramatic in all three cities than July 11. So July 10 and not July 11 is the night of the scorching full-moon ("shahr ramadan&quot.

    So the fast should start on July 11 and last for 10 days, i.e. until July 20.

      Do you know how I can find out the percent illumination for Austin, Texas. I went to the site you included but the per-city report doesnt include illumination data as far as I can tell.

      The moon doesnt look as red and scorched as the pics you provided, here in Austin. So I'm wondering if it won't be 100% illumination until tomorrow night.

        I will start off from where you and I agree, and that is on the 10 day fast period.

        I am trying to look into the scortching aspect of the moon that you have spoken of to see if it is a) verifiable, b) consistent.

        Can you please share the background that brought you to this conclusion?

          I totally forgot.
          Can somebody tell me when does the Ramadan starts in Slovenia, because last night and the night before last, i saw a full moon and she was fully white.

          If anyone sees this post, i'd really appreicate it, if you can tell me when is it time to fast in Slovenia, because i was talking to Arnoldyasin about this and we're still calculating stuff, so please, brothers, sisters, hurry up.

            I have managed to look into this a little more...The issue of the moon`s 100% illumination occurs more than once during the year according to the table in the link Ayman provide...Therefore, I do not see any logic behind choosing the date in July.

                Yes, i have to say, i agree with you Elke, Allah Most Powerful does not want any hardship on us but there is still one more question that i have I was told Ramadan means the hottest month and that we have to fast during the hottest month, that is, the Ramadan, but how will i fast when Ramadan, the hottest month, is in December???????

                  Doing it in the hottest months is the natural equalent of a finnish sauna. You sweat buckets, and get filth out of the body. Then you go out get cooled down, drink and prepare for sweating buckets all over again. I dont know the scriptural reasons, but from a health perspective it makes a lot of sense when you are are an overweight westerner. ;D

                      Please note that the moon rises faster on July 11 than on July 10. So on July 10 the moon takes a lower path across the horizon. This lower path is what gives it the dramatic reddish color. This means that the full-moon will appear redder on July 10.

                      The red color has to do with the altitude of the moon not with the percent illumination. This is due to light diffraction from dust in the atmosphere when the moon is low. So the full-moon taking a low path across the horizon is what gives it the red color. Around the summer solstice is the time of the year when the moon takes the lowest path across the horizon. If you look at the moon after say 10PM, it will appear whiter because it will be about 20 degrees above the horizon.

                        We agree on much more than that. For example, we also agree that the year is solar.

                        Anytime the moon is full, the sun and the moon are on opposite sides of the earth. Thus, if one is high in the sky, as the sun is around the summer solstice, the moon must be low. Of course, this is 100% consistent. So full moons that occur around the summer solstice are special because they follow the lowest path across the sky of all of the year's full moons.

                        The "scorching" aspect of the full moon occurs due to the same phenomenon that gives sunsets their red color. It is the scattering of light in the earth's dusty atmosphere close to the horizon. Thus, a full-moon that hangs lower across the horizon will appear and stay redder than one that quickly climbs to a higher altitude. Also, for some reason, our brains are wired to perceive such low hanging red full moons as much larger than normal. In addition, the red full-moon after the summer solstice is special because it occurs when the weather is starting to get very hot. Thus, the two aspects of "scorching" (the red color and heat) are associated with this particular full-moon.

                        Because of its color and appearance being associated with the hotter time of the year many ancient cultures had names for the full moon after the summer solstice such as hot moon, blood moon, red moon, etc. In a flat desert with its dusty atmosphere and very hot weather, this "scorching full moon" would have appeared very dramatic to the pre-quranic Arabs.

                        This is all easily verifiable by observing the full moon after the summer solstice when it appears. This is one of the easiest to witness attention-grabbing sights in the night sky.

                        Can you please share the background that brought you to this conclusion?

                        The background traces to the original research you did in this area. Your research pointed my attention to 1712, which indicated for certain that the year is solar. The passage also hints about how to use the sun to know the year. It hints that we know the year through the night and day. For example, the easiest way to measure the year is as the interval between shortest night/longest day and the next shortest night/longest day (summer solstice). We also know about the shadow being an indicator for the sun (2545). The summer solstice happens to be easier to pinpoint because it is also the time when the sun is highest and this is reflected in the shadow that it projects.

                        The other breakthrough came when I was debating with someone who advocates the traditional view of a lunar year and to support his position, he pointed out that one of the meanings of the word "shahr" is moon. I looked this up in Lisan Al3arab and indeed one of the meanings of "shahr" was "the moon when it is nearly full". As you know, the etymology of the word "shahr" indicates something obvious, something famous, something full-figured. For example, in Classical Arabic the word "shahira" actually means "a full-figured woman". So the etymology pointed very strongly to the meaning being "full-moon". Thus, "shahr ramadan" literally means "scorching full-moon".

                          Regular full-moons rise very rapidly but the one after the summer solstice will take a low path across the horizon and thus will maintain its reddish color for a couple of hours after its appearance. You need to witness the scorching full-moon in the first couple of hours after its appearance while it is still low in the horizon.

                            Nobody has to fast, even if they can do it, if it is hard for them

For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.

                            The passage in 2184 actually says "for those who can tolerate it". Not "for those who can't tolerate it". This means that even if you are able to do it but have to tolerate difficulty, you can instead feed/provide for those that are deprived. Either way, you would be taking the steep path.

                            Notice how the feeding/providing for the deprived is a steep path. So fasting is also supposed to be a steep path just like its substitute.

                            When I reached the understanding that it is the toughest part of the year regardless of where you are, this was actually in line with the message and was more confirmation that this was the correct understanding.

                                    What I'm not sure is that the altitude on the 4th is lower (-11.9 compared to -10.6), even though the Fraction Illuminated is also lower by 0.01. So, is this means that the full-moon still occurs on the 3rd (shawm starts on the 4th), or is it the full-moon is on 4th (shawm starts on the 5th)? Thanks.

                                      What I'm not sure is that the altitude on the 4th is lower (-11.9 compared to -10.6), even though the Fraction Illuminated is also lower by 0.01. So, is this means that the full-moon still occurs on the 3rd (shawm starts on the 4th), or is it the full-moon is on 4th (shawm starts on the 5th)? Thanks.

                                      A negative altitude means that it is below the horizon so you can't see it. So start looking on Jan 3rd after 1810. Notice that between 1810 and 2010 (two hours) the moon rises about 25 degrees and it is 100% illluminated when it rises. On the other hand, in two hours the moon on Jan 4 rises to about 27 degrees and is 99% illuminated. So the moon on the 3rd is not only full but also takes a lower path accross the sky so it will appear more reddish and more dramatic. So the 3rd of Jan is the scorching full-moon in the southern hemisphere.

                                      So you start the fast on the 4th (the daybreak following the scorching full-moon) for 10 days (the 13th is the last day).

                                          I'd posted the dates for the full moon for the northern hemisphere back in November last year. See http//www.free-minds.org80/forum/index.php?topic=4361.0

                                          I no longer have a license for the program but I had used - Starry Night Pro 4.5 - which calculated those dates and I confirmed by visual examination.

                                          It seems to be confirmed by other calculators, so I believe there still can be discrepancy of one day or so; and there are arguments for both starting earlier or later but it probably matters little overall.

                                          If you observe the following page you will see that the Full moon is July 11 as I had written earlier
