I read the explanation of the verse by JM in the link provided by Simple, thanks to both, and I totally agree with it.
However, I also understand from this verse that the Prophet told his wife something, but when she spread it, she added something he did not say, hence "he recognized some (what he really said) and denied some (what he did not say) and when he confronted her, she asked who told you?". She wouldn't have asked this question if she honestly told what he said to her. She would have said So? you told me this!!
She was surprised how he knew that she said something he didn't tell her. -
Muhammad's words is Allah's words (things revealed by spirit), it was not weird if he knew something that others wasnt.
Like a geologist knows when the earthquacke will happen, Muhammad knew what had happened and what would happen, because he had blown Ar Ruh. His words were not his but spirits.

663 And lo! the Prophet told something in confidence to one of his wives; and when she thereupon divulged it, and God made this known to him, he acquainted with some of it and passed over some of it. And as soon as he let her know it, she asked, "Who has told thee this?" - he replied, "The All-Knowing, the All-Aware has told me."
My question is Did the prophet also receive divine revelations outside quran? If not, then how is the explanation for 663? As far as I know, nowhere in quran is it mentioned that Allah told the prophet about those confidential matters. Any help would be highly appreciated.
Salam Andy
But the very same verse is telling us that Allah infomed the prophet with this confidential matter "and God made this known to him"

Peace,
Does 'God made this known to him' immediatly imply a revelation? No, certainly not. There are many ways God can show us things. It is the same as in the story with Mary when she has food and Zacheria, her guardian, is wondering how she got it. She answers with God provides. Now most people will say 'angels' brought her food. But does the verse say that? No. When i put food on my table and start eating, God also has provided for me. No 'angels' involved here, just God providing me, as one of His names is the Nourisher.
Mary probably promised not to tell who brought her some food as Zacheria was supposed to take of her, so she gave an answer that made sure she didn't expose the person and in the same time making sure she didn't lie. Now what better answer to give? God provides. It is funny what people fill in for themselves. Instead of the most logical answer, they go look for the most mythical one.
The same is for this situation where probably somebody heard the women talk, and this person told Muhammed. To not expose the person who told him, to prevent the exposer to be despised by his wives, he gave the best answer when he was asked who told him. Without telling a lie and without exposing the person who told him, he just says; The All-knowing, the All-aware has told me. Because God allowed the prophet to know what his wives were doing, God allowed the person to overhear and tell the prophet, so it is God who made him know through different ways. No revelation neccesary, and no lying involved.
It is also possible Muhammed recieved the first part of the verse first, and the second part came later when the discussion already happened.
These are for me the 2 most logical answers and the best.

Hello Arnold
Yeh I agree the verse never said angels brought her food, good point

hmmm, did the verse say that?

so you reject conjecture for the sake of other conjectures?, what is your point that the verse never said that and you bring other conjectures that were also never said in the verses?

Peace,
I look for the most logical possible answer. My answers are the first most logical answers, less conjecture then the normal approach.....

Peace bro
so yours is, hmmm let's say, about 50% conjecture and the normal approach is about 75% conjecture so you chose the least conjectur, right?
Cheers

Yes,is also the most scientific approach which the Quran also demands...
