    Peace

I hope these verses help as well

2170 When they are told, "Follow what GOD has revealed herein," they say, "We follow only what we found our parents doing." What if their parents did not understand, and were not guided?

5104 When they are told, "Come to what GOD has revealed, and to the messenger," they say, "What we found our parents doing is sufficient for us." What if their parents knew nothing, and were not guided?

728 They commit a gross sin, then say, "We found our parents doing this, and GOD has commanded us to do it." Say, "GOD never advocates sin. Are you saying about GOD what you do not know?"

770-71 They said, "Did you come to make us worship GOD alone, and abandon what our parents used to worship? We challenge you to bring the doom you threaten us with, if you are truthful." He said, "You have incurred condemnation and wrath from your Lord. Do you argue with me in defense of innovations you have fabricated - you and your parents - which were never authorized by GOD? Therefore, wait and I will wait along with you."

7173 Nor can you say, "It was our parents who practiced idolatry, and we simply followed in their footsteps. Will You punish us because of what others have innovated?"

923 O you who believe, do not ally yourselves even with your parents and your siblings, if they prefer disbelieving over believing. Those among you who ally themselves with them are transgressing.

4322-25 The fact is that they said, "We found our parents carrying on certain practices, and we are following in their footsteps." Invariably, when we sent a warner to any community, the leaders of that community would say, "We found our parents following certain practices, and we will continue in their footsteps." (The messenger) would say, "What if I brought to you better guidance than what you inherited from your parents?" They would say, "We are disbelievers in the message you brought." Consequently, we requited them. Note the consequences for the rejectors.

Sorry for a lot of verses. Make sure to read all of them, though. I think they'd help. Also, if you have any doubts about the translations, go here http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm

Hope this helped. And I hope things turn out well.

    Peace.

      Salaam NoProgressive,

      Regarding the parents...

And We instructed the human to be good to his parents. But if they strive to make you set up partners with Me, then do not obey them. To Me are all your destinies, and I will inform you of what you used to do.

Claiming a certain law, of which no basis can be found in the quran, is coming from The God is a form of setting up partners with Him. If you are sure that the above ayat applies to you, then you must not obey your parents, but treat them well nevertheless.

              Salam,

my parents are from a hindu background and therefore practice idolatory. It is not easy, but do not follow the practices if it involves idolatory, but we must try our utmost to maintain amicable relations with them. Also,we should slowly but surely, talk to them about quranic virtues, during our day to day conversations, over time,my parents have slowly softened their stance,as when we show the beauty of islam in its true form, sometimes even the most ardent opponent has no choice but to be amazed, dumbfounded and stand in awe, such is islam the true religion/way/system of life.

Peace sis no progressive...hope this helps and do not declare war on your parents, pls try and be less harsh as possible

This is talking about shirk only - i hope people /children don't get the wrong impression , it isn't giving them the licence of not obeying their parents in matters which don't or arn't part and parcel of shirk.

                Thank you.

These verses seems very perturbing, specially the bold parts. How can a mother (or father) make her siblings an ememy (opposite of ally) against her and vice versa? What are the implications and consequences of disobeying from either sides? Once again, I believe the "agenda" is of historical significance? Your thoughts please?

JK- Very simple. First you didnt highlight the qualifiers which if you did it deliberately is hypocrisy. Now we as believers are not to give in to our parents or our siblings if they prefer to reject GOD and His Signs. Consider myself for example. When my father and my brother supporting his view told me "Why dont u respect Muhmmad anymore and why dont you perform sunna salat or why dont you mention Muhmmad's name in salat/shahaada" im not to give in and say "ok daddy and bro ur right" but say "lakum deenakum walia deen". Now my father and bro know my views and dont bother me regarding this anymore. GOD Bless!

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoola tattakhithoo abaakum wa-ikhwanakumawliyaa ini istahabboo alkufra AAala al-eemaniwaman yatawallahum minkum faola-ika humu alththalimoona
O ye who believe! take not for protectors your fathers and your brothers if they love infidelity above Faith if any of you do so, they do wrong.

Its parents and relatives -not children. Its the older generation as they where mostly pagans or idol worshippers - most of them, i think.

                      Salaams.

                          Danish,
if your parents, your siblings, your friends, or anyone does wrong, and asks you to do wrong, do you do it? shouldn't that affect your relationship with that person?

                          peace

Its parents and relatives -not children.

Daughters and sons are CHILDREN of their parents, aren't they not? So when the verse mentions as "do not obey YOUR parents", don't YOU become your parent's child.

Its the older generation as they where mostly pagans or idol worshippers - most of them, i think.

Your point is taken. Making of idols out of 'clay' were a norm in historic times. People worshipped all sorts of idols such as fire, moon, sun, water, animals, figurines, and so forth.

                            http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idolatry

                            http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allah

Muhammad forbade everyone of his followers from worshipping other idols except The One (al-lah - The God) whom he called Supreme above all other idols, hence destroying others that paved way to this Supreme One, which still exists in Mecca where Muslims call upon it, circumvent, kiss its walls, face and do salaat towards it, etc. Because of this known physical nature of Allah, attributes are given, such all powerful, most merciful, omnipersent, omniscience.

Note It is NOT possible to label such attributes to an unseen, non-physical and unknown cosmological deity. Scientifically and logically it becomes senseless, which can be further debated and understood.

Having said the above, people in those times were ordered and forced into deserting their idols and believe in the The One Supreme, thus having parents, siblings, friends and all other relations to come to terms by disobeying them if they worshipped anything other than this Allah. If they didn't, they were requited, condemned and burnt alive in Hell (fire) and as for those who obeyed, rewards awaited in Heaven (gardens/paradise).

This is a short summarised version in relations to the verses in question.

if your parents, your siblings, your friends, or anyone does wrong, and asks you to do wrong, do you do it? shouldn't that affect your relationship with that person?
It is not that simple to break blood relations, especially with your parents, unless you are self sufficient and mature enough to confront and/or seperate out OR when your parents, relatives and all those you live around and socialize with, come to YOUR terms, unlike or very rarely the case with johnny_k, and specially when one is confined or surrounded in an Islamic environment or from religious bigotry.

Both verse is not contravene each other, the emphazyse shall be on disbelieving
Auliya is a leader, instead of ally, see the more appropriate translation

O you who believe! Take not for Auliya your fathers and your brothers if they prefer disbelief to Belief. And whoever of you does so, then he is one of the Zalimoon (wrong-doers, etc.).
                              ( , At-Taubah, Chapter #9, Verse #23)

When our father became a disbeliever we should not make him as leader for believer.

Mentioning QS.298 it was a to support the QS.923, when our father to be a musyreek (not believe Allah is our leader) we should not obey his orders (back to be disbeliever), but we have to respect him as our parent (speak tenderly, good treatment etc)

                              Compare to

And (remember) when Luqman said to his son when he was advising him "O my son! Join not in devoting others with Allah. Verily! Joining others in devotion with Allah is a great Zoolm (wrong) indeed.
                              ( , Luqman, Chapter #31, Verse #13)

                              Matthew 10 34
Think not that I came to send peace on the earth I came not to send peace, but a sword.

                              Matthew 10 35
For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law

                              Matthew 10 36
and a man's foes `shall be' they of his own household.

                              Matthew 10 37
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

So what wrong with God's verses ?
