Translation of 4:66

Salaam nadeem
That depends on how you understand verse 6111.
How do you understand it?
What does "anfusikum" in this verse mean otherwise?
Wouldn't it be possible that while one is striving in the cause of God, they might get killed, and that they would know that a priori? Would this be suicide? -
Peace
I believe the verse means to kill the evil calls inside them
Cheers
Do not agree, it must be to kill musyrik spirit i.e. men who believe in Allah but won't be controled by Allah's law.

Fine, because being a mushrik is an evil call
The verse in no way suggest to kill the self as brother Nadeen said how come Allah says this after it

Kill your self means you are not exist any more, do not make your idiology shape your doings, you now are the devoter to Allah. When you think you are is you are, you never kill your self.

My understanding (in addition to the kill your ego symbolism mentioned above) has been that the verse is saying to the effect that it is directed at those who don't truly believe, or are arrogant thinking that they control their destiny. In other words, 'go ahead, kill yourselves then, if you are so assured of your destination'.
In each of these viewpoints, it isn't an order to go and kill yourself but is an action used as an illustrative example, imo.
Let's see what it says when we insert these viewpoints.
Ego
466 And had We decreed for them (those who say they believe) "Kill yourselves (ego, nafs)," or "Leave your land (maybe shun/give away your wealth)," they would not have done so (because they love this world) except for a few of them. And if they had done what they were advised with (commanded), it would have been better for them and helped to strengthen them (in faith, character etc).
467 Then (increasing faith, submitting) We would have given them from Us a great reward.
468 And We would have guided them to a Straight Path (because their intention is to submit).Another viewpoint
466 And had We decreed for them (those who say they believe) "Kill yourselves," or "Leave your land," they would not have done so except for a few of them (who truly believe because most say they believe but only when it is convenient for them) . And if they had done what they were advised with, it would have been better for them and helped to strengthen them (rather than relying on other things, only God is the source of security).
467 Then We would have given them from Us a great reward (because they submitted).
468 And We would have guided them to a Straight Path.Another
466 And had We decreed for them "Kill yourselves," or "Leave your land," (if you are so confident of your destination after you die and/or if you truly trust in God) they would not have done so except for a few of them. And if they had done what they were advised with, it would have been better for them and helped to strengthen them.
467 Then We would have given them from Us a great reward.
468 And We would have guided them to a Straight Path. -
If you kill won't your self you ought to be refrain from leaving your land (exodus).

Peace be upon you,
Killing your "nafs"(subconcious) is to kill the conditionings within you. Musa told the sons of israel to "kill" thier nafs(subconscious) in order for them to be born again.
Leaving your land is the same thing, when yuo go to a different land, you learn new things and you change.
Thats why the rest of the verse says "and if that they did what they are being advised/warned with it (it) would have been best for them"

peace, all
466
And if We had prescribed for them Lay down yourselves or go forth from your homes, they would not have done it except a few of them; and if they had done what they were admonished, it would have certainly been better for them and best in strengthening (them);
i may be wrong but im understanding that if God had ordered them to; surrender there current lifestyle to God and His way/rules or give up there possesion a very few of them would have been true of faith, as they prize for this world over the hereafter.
it for sure can't be litarally taken as God would have guided them on the straight way afterwards, and you cant be walking the straight way when your dead.
try looking at it like this;
And if We had prescribed for them let go of /submit/offer/surrender/sacrifice/give up yourselves (to God's Way) or go forth from your homes (leave your possesions)...
or this;
And if We had prescribed for them let go of /submit/offer/surrender/sacrifice/give up your current lifestyle or go forth from your homes (leave your possesions)...
God Almighty knows best.

Nafs has never been able to kill, Allah wants nafs to be nafsul muthamainah (Al Fajr). The understanding nafs as hadith says is totally wrong... Men has been ordered to control nafs not to kill.
