I have a question on how the months in an Islamic calender should be maintained.

Layth in his article on Ramadan writes that "The months begin with the full moon (2189, 3639)."

I am just wondering how does Layth relate these two verses to his proposition that the month begin with the full moon. If anyone can explain it a bit, that will be great !!

        The verses are

2189 They ask you regarding the new moons, say, "They are a timing mechanism for the people as well as for the Pilgrimage."...
3639 The moon We have measured it to appear in stages, until it returns to being like an old curved sheath.

Apparently, these verses talk about new moon... not the full moon......... and that has to go against Layth's proposition, isn't that so?

I have similar questions and if anyone can tell me where in Quran it says the moon, whichever one, has to be sighted I would be most grateful as I cant find it and it appears to come from hadith.

I have been looking into the calendar thing too and found that pre-islam the arabs used the same calendar as the jews which was lunisolar or whatever they call it, which seems more likely what God said in this verse

10.5 It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did Allah create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain His Signs in detail, for those who understand.

so both are to count or measure time. The sighting of the new moon is how the Jews decided on a new month but stopped using the sighting when we found it could be calcualted, as God had said, they both (sun and moon) run to a fixed law which we now know.

The lunisolar year had to have some added to account for the 12 months not dividing into 365.25 exactly, like the gregorian calendar and leap years, but worked correctly in terms of seasons and crops, like the gregorian calendar. Now we have ramadan when there are no dates, this seems to be the wrong time of year to me and after reading what Leyth wrote it makes much more sense.

Salaam, Where is Layth's article ?
