I know the Quran says that there is to be no compulsion in religion, but how does this work from a practical standpoint?

What is the difference between enforcing ideas of right on wrong that comes from one's faith with actually coercing your faith on others? Like for example, the Quran says not to steal, oppress, ect. I have been told that when it says not to force one's religion on others it speaks of forcing them to actually become Muslim. But if this is the case where does it make this distinction in the scripture?

        salaam BH,

"as for those who reject whether you warn them or do not warn them, they do not believe"
        surah 2, al-quran

from my interpretation of the quran, in most cases God tells us not to do somwthing and he tells us, o.k. if you live like that, your reward will be like this and if you live not the way that is best for you, then you will not end up in a good place. i do not think god forces you to follow "the right path" but you are RECOMMENDED to do so for the betterment of your life...

        peace, rifat

Invite with gentleness and wise teachings. Any "distinction" will be proven through life experience. How many years of putting peolpe in jails without any real attempt to rehabilitate thier thinking will it take for us to realize that force does not work. Ths does not mean that we dont DEFEND ourselves from murderers and oppressors, but we are never to be agressors. The only thing we do is to continue to invite and debate with wisdom, and let he/she who hears folow, and peace to all others.

            Peace,

I have a question about this.

Let's say we have a pure Quranic State.

Now we are reminded by, "There is no compulsion in deen".

So what happens when a non-muslim commits a crime, how do we punish them?????

Theivery is easily dealt with, same rule would apply.

But what about say pornography ??

Is it the 100 lashes or what????

I am also reminded of a verse that tells us muslims, that the land is vast and that if we don't like the conditions to migrate.

So does this mean that people who live in a Quranic state have to obey the laws?

There is no such a thing as Quranic state... There is only states with laws that are largely in keeping with the content of Al Quran. At some extent USA is more 'quranic' than say Saudi Arabia.

Any country that sets a certain official religion/belief can not be 'quranic' because there will be injustices among the people and some will feel more superior than the others.

                Peace be upon you,

The problem here is that people are taking "Muslim" and "Quranic" as some sect. This is a message of LIFE and how we should behave. Not a message for some group called "Muslims". Each person should strive to be peaceful person(muslim), but we cant force people to do that. So there is no compulsion. However, those who dont follow guidance cannot compell others to accept thier wickedness, and we have the right to defend ourselves. As long as a person does not do things to corrupt the world, they can do what they want with themselves and hold any view they want about life. But if they start effecting the enivornment of others, they we have the right to defend ourselves, so it is not that one is compelling them, they have brought it on thierselves.

Our duty is to forbid evil but God is the one who guides who He wants.
