Isn't One of the Duties of the Messenger Also To Teach the Quran?
-
peace
What you call "The Quran" was written by the messenger. Those are his words.
The message is from God. But the words belong to a person.
For example you discovered that hell is actually cold. You started teaching people that. And then you wrote it down.
Or you wrote it down and then used the written form to teach people what you discovered. -
Assalamu Alaykum
What are you talking about my friend?
The Quran is the word of God. According to Surah 3164, one of the duties of the Messenger is to teach us the "Book", which is the Quran. So I need the Prophet to teach the Quran to me. Where can I find his teachings?
-
Assalamu Alaykum
That makes no sense. Look at the verse...
Surah 3164
GOD has blessed the believers by raising in their midst a messenger from among them, to recite for them His revelations, and to purify them, and to teach them the scripture and wisdom. Before this, they had gone totally astray.
The messenger would RECITE the Quran (the content itself) and also TEACH it. If the teachings were the content of the Quran itself then it would have been enough for the messenger to just recite it.

The word used for recite here (tilawat) has a connotation of following. That is, one must put the teachings there to practical use. I think it makes sense that his teachings are the quran. For example, someone who has gained understanding of it's contents may teach it to a newcomer, or to anyone who may need clarification on some issue. If you take a look around some people ask questions pertaining to some portion of the quran. They'll need clarification on what something means, or is some act necessary or how to go about applying the teachings. Someone who has gained understanding may teach it.

Peace all,
All the teachings of the Prophet are within the Qur'aan itself.
Teaching a book is different from just its recitation. Recitation involves just recitation but teaching involves putting all the similar verses together and then understanding Allah's revelations based on looking at the context of the Qur'aanic verses and letting the Qur'aan define words itself and explain itself. There can be a lot of verses on similar topics scattered all over the Qur'aan. The teachers job is to gather all those verses together, thus explaining and clarifying a certain topic and that is what the Prophet did. He also taught the Qur'aan by following the Qur'aan in day to day life and judging by the Qur'aan and its principles. Thus we do not need to know what actual decisions the Prophet made but all we need to know is the Qur'aanic laws and the principles on which those decisions were based and then making our decisions and judgments according to those Qur'aanic laws and principles.
The people used to ask the Prophet questions and he used to answer them from the Qur'aan. One can find all those teachings of the Prophet in the Qur'aan itself; such verses begin with "they ask you concerning.........." and then "say..........". Some examples of the Qur'aanic teachings are as follows
The underlined portion of the ayaat is the "hadeeth" of Prophet Muhammad, because Allah is asking him to say that in response to questions from the people
2189 They ask you regarding the crescents, Say "They are a timing mechanism for the people as well as for the Pilgrimage." And piety is not that you would enter a home from its back, but piety is whomever is righteous and come to the homes from their main doors. And be aware of God that you may succeed.
NOW RECITATION OF THIS VERSE WOULD BE
2189 They ask you regarding the crescents, Say"They are a timing mechanism for the people as well as for the Pilgrimage."
BUT TEACHING OF THIS VERSE WOULD BE
The Prophet saying "The crescents are a timing mechanism for the people as well as for the Pilgrimage." and then actually timing the Pilgrimage using the crescent.
Thus you can see how the Prophet could have taught THE BOOK by saying and doing nothing outside the Qur'aan.
Some other examples of the true hadeeth and teachings of the Prophet would be as follows
2214 They ask you what they should spend, Say "What you spend out of goodness should go to your family and the relatives and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer. And any good you do, God is fully aware of it."
2216 They ask you about the restricted month "Is there fighting in it?" Say "Much fighting is in it, and to repel from the path of God and to disbelieve in Him, and at the Restricted Temple, to drive its inhabitants out is far greater with God, and persecution is worse than being killed." And they still will fight you until they turn you back from your system if they are able. And whoever of you turns back from his system, and he dies while disbelieving, then these have nullified their work in this life and the next; these are the people of the Fire, in it they will abide eternally!
2218 They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say "In them is great harm, and a benefit for mankind; but their harm is greater than their benefit." And they ask you how much are they to give, Say "The excess." It is thus that God clarifies for you the revelations that you may think.
2219 In this world and the next; and they ask you regarding the orphans, Say "To fix their situation is best, and if you are to care for them, then they are your brothers." And God knows the corrupt from the good, and had God wished He could have made things difficult. God is Noble, Wise.
2221 And they ask you about menstruation? Say "It is harmful, so retire yourselves sexually from the women during the menstruation, and do not approach them until they are cleansed. When they are cleansed, then you may approach them as God has commanded you." God loves the repenters and He loves the cleansed.
56 They ask you what was made lawful to them, Say "All the good things have been made lawful for you, and what the trained dogs and birds catch, you teach them from what God teaches you." So eat from what they have captured for you and mention God's name upon it, and be aware of God. God is quick in reckoning.
7188 They ask you regarding the Hour "When will be its time?" Say "Its knowledge is with my Lord, none can reveal its coming except Him. It is heavy through the heavens and the Earth; it will not come to you except suddenly." They ask you, as if you are responsible for it! Say "Its knowledge is with God, but most people do not know."
82 They ask you regarding the spoils of war, Say "The spoils of war are for God and the messenger." So be aware of God, and be upright in matters between you; and obey God and His messenger if you are believers.
966 And if you ask them they Say "We were only jesting and playing." Say "Is it in God and His verses and His messenger you were mocking?"
1130 "And my people, I do not ask you for money, my reward is with God. Nor will I turn away those who believe, for they will meet their Lord. But I see that you are a people who are ignorant."
1786 And they ask you concerning the Spirit. Say "The Spirit is from the command on my Lord, and the knowledge you were given was but very little."
3937 And if you ask them "Who created the heavens and the Earth?", they will Say "God." Say "Do you see what you call on besides God, If God wanted any harm for me, can they alleviate His harm? Or if He wanted a mercy for me, can they hold back his mercy?" Say "God is sufficient for me; in Him those who trust shall put their trust."
A professor of medicine can be teaching a class from a certain text book, for example HARRISONS PRINCIPLES OF MEDICINE. While he is teaching the class he bases his lecture on the relevant chapter from the book, and uses the same words to teach the students. He even prepares transparencies and handouts from quotations and tables from the same book. He also cross references from other chapters in the same book on similar and relevant topics. Thus he teaches from the book using words from the same book and none of his own words.
We need to look at all the similar verses and their contexts and the Qur'aanic definitions and then follow the best meaning, and that is how the Prophet taught the Book
3918 The ones who listen to what is being said, and then follow the best of it. These are the ones whom God has guided, and these are the ones who possess intelligence.
3955 And follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Lord, before the retribution comes to you suddenly when you least expect it.
The Qur'aan itself is the utterance of the Prophet as told to us by Allah Himself
6940 This is the utterance of an honourable messenger.
6941 It is not the utterance of a poet; rarely do you believe.
6942 Nor the utterance of a soothsayer; rarely do you take heed. The Prophet dare not add anything to the revelations of Allah. If he would have said anything IN ADDITION to or CONTRADICTORY to the Qur'aan, even to explain it, he would be inventing his own laws and attributing falsehood to Allah and his artery would have been severed
6943 A revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
6944 And had he attributed anything falsely to Us.
6945 We would have seized him by the right.
6946 Then, We would have severed his life-line.
6947 None of you would be able to prevent it.
6948 And this is a reminder for the righteous.
6949 And We know that some of you are deniers. The Prophet merely followed what was inspired to him
650 Say "I do not say to you that I posses God's treasures, nor do I know the future, nor do I say to you that I am an Angel. I merely follow what is inspired to me." Say "Are the blind and the seer the same? Do you not think?"
7203 And because you do not bring them a sign, they Say "If only you had brought one." Say "I only follow what is inspired to me from my Lord. This is an evidence from your Lord, and a guide and mercy to a people who believe."
469 Say "I am no different from the other messengers, nor do I know what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is inspired to me. I am no more than a clear warner"
In the following verse, what is inspired to him is clearly the Qur'aan
1015 And when Our clear revelations are recited to them, those who do not wish to meet Us said "Bring a Quran other than this, or change it!" Say "It is not for me to change it from my own accord, I merely follow what is inspired to me. I fear if I disobey my Lord the retribution of a great day!"
The Prophet complains against his people on the Last Day not by saying that they deserted his personal teachings other than the Qur'aan but by saying they deserted the Qur'aan, thus the Qur'aan HAS TO CONTAIN ALL THE TEACHINGS OF THE PROPHET
2530 And the messenger said "My Lord, my people have deserted/chained this Quran."
The true hadeeth of the Prophet are within the Qur'aan itself and all the other unverifiable hearsays and rumors and hadeeth falsely attributed to the Prophet should be rejected and not believed as per Allah Himself
456 These are God's revelations that We recite to you with truth. So, in which HADEETH, after God and His revelations, do they believe?
7182 As for those who deny Our revelations, We will entice them from where they do not know.
7183 And I will encourage them, for My scheming is formidable.
7184 Do they not reflect? Their companion has no madness; but he is a clear warner.
7185 Did they not look at the dominion of heavens and Earth, and all that God has created? Perhaps their time is drawing near; so in which HADEETH after this one will they believe?3923 God has sent down THE BEST HADEETH, a Scripture that is similar with two paths. The skins of those who reverence their Lord shiver from it, then their skins and their hearts soften up to the remembrance of God. Such is God's guidance; He guides with it whoever He wills. And for whomever God misguides, then none can guide him.
Here the context is clearly the Qur'aan and the best hadeeth is the Qur'aan.
We should heed Allah's words
6836 What is wrong with you, how do you judge?
6837 Or do you have another book which you study?
6838 In it, you can find what you wish?316 And from the people, there are those who accept BASELESS HADEETH to mislead from the path of God without knowledge, and they take it as entertainment. These will have a humiliating retribution.
Here Allah is clearly ordering not to follow FALSE HADEETH. The only true hadeeth are in Qur'aan. All other hadeeth are BASELESS and FALSE (unverifiable hearsay compiled by Bukhari and company).
The Prophet followed the Qur'aan itself in any day to day matter. The Prophet could not have gone against Allah's words when Allah orders him to judge only according to Al-Qur'aan
4105 We have revealed to you the Scripture with truth that you may judge between the people by that which God has shown you, and do not be an advocate for the treacherous.
10109 And follow what is being inspired to you and be patient until God judges. And He is the best of judges.
2213 The people used to be one nation, then God sent the prophets as bearers of good news and warners, and He sent down with them the Scripture with the facts so that they may judge between the people in what they were disputing. But after receiving the clarity, the people disputed in it due to animosity between them. And God guided those who believed with His permission regarding what they disputed in of the truth. And God guides whoever He wishes to a straight path.
Peace

So where do we see his teachings?
Maybe you should go back to the Quran and scan it for
"They ask you about...Say.." or any similar instructions. This clearly shows that the Prophet does not, or ought not reply from himself. He would wait untill God gives him the answer.Referring to your topic about "prayer" on another thread. Isn't it interesting that when God commanded us to "perform salat", nobody asked "how"? Or if they did, God did not include such a question in the Qur'aan? Because people understood it and understood that there are no "rak3aat" or units, otherwise they would have asked, as some do "But,O Messenger of God, how many units?" And we would have a verse "They ask you about salat, say..."

All the messenger;s important teachings are in the Qur'an and if by other sources you mean those thousands of hadiths in collections & stuff, I don't think most of those are from the messenger. Some might be, but in the absence of hard evidence it's near impossible to tell which is. Best to stick with the more certain book, the Qur'an, and stay clear from dubious materials.
Oh, and welcome to Free-minds. welcome

where is it that you think the explanation will come from then. hadith? I cannot be, for the simple reason that bukhari alone discarded 90% of the material he collected as poppycock. This means that the people surrounding the prophet had no reservations lying through their teeth about him, and as such are not to be trusted in any way. If you know a people tell you 90% lies, do you trust them? If your answer is no, then why do you trust hadith, if it isnt because some scholar made you turn of your head and accept such a peoples testemony. Personally i wont. The Quran is clear as daylight

Peace be upon you,
The God message to us is Al Kitaab, which is symbolic for the Universe itself which contains Laws for us to observe and follow towards a successful life. The book called "Quran" is a book written by a man who rose to the level of prophethood, like we all have th epotential to do...and all it does is point us back to the signs(ayat) in creation, from the horizons to within your spirit(nafs). So we shoudl read all "qurans" (readings) and that which we confirm as Truth belonghs to AL QURAN - THE READING. The READING is not restricted to one single human book, if the trees were pens and the oceans ink, they would run out before the words of Our Lord runs out.
Do not idolize men nor books, serve the God who created all.
Lastly, regarding the words "hard" and "easy", there are no reality to these words, they are relative. That which is hard becomes easy after practice and repitiion, just like the words big and small, I am big compared to my daughter, but small compared to an elephant.

Peace be upon you Zenje,
If one cannot learn from the Ultimate Teacher, from the Almighty God... can they learn from a dead human?
AMEN!!!
