Some others that I can't understand made it in there-
#33, 34 (just what is a dayyouth anyway? Someone who is a youth in the day? Perhaps an old biddy come twilight?), 48, 49, 57 and as for the rest, in some there is no direct command but something that is implied, which is a bit dodgy depending on circumstances. Once again, I haven't read all of them, just the ones that stand out I suppose.
Alen...have you checked this list against the quran before posting it? Once again, where did you get this from?

I removed the ones that were mentioned and as i'm told in the Quran only the shirk is the major, unforgivable sin, others are forgivable but that doesn't mean, we can kill, rape, fornicate, steal, lie and oppress all the way.
Suppose someone is having sex before marriage all his teen years and then discovers Islam and accepts it. I think we can easily say that it will be forgiven, if he, now that he's a muslim, stops fornicating and starts following Quran alone.

imo, these are the roots we grow from. To live life without any of these three beliefs/behaviors as your compass is major. Everything else is minor.

What if my reasons for doing good deeds are that i empirically have proven to myself that altruism and/or compassion is good and beneficial for society and all concerned,and that i feel my life and that of others is happier when i practice compassion for humanity????????

There doesn't have to be a diety, at least not right away. The quran tells us about God things like "most merciful" and "most gracious" etc. Why don't we take god as those ideals (until we actually understand god. that's why the verse mentions different beliefs). Belief in the "last day" has to to do with recognizing that your actions have consequences. You will get what you deserve.
If you do good deeds because you understand those things, that's when you are a good person. If you help your neighbor out because you're being blackmailed by the mafia, it's not the same. -

I guess it depends on who's version of "good" we're talking about. If you speak of a perennial philosophy, then I would guess that good works is enough because good works implies understanding in some form the principles outlined in 569.
But good works of nationalism, for instance, don't usually amount to much as far as spiritual development is concerned.

we're supposed to do good so that Allah may be pleased with us and reward us after death but it's wrong to do good so people would think you're a good person.
look at all the disbelievers that do good deeds, but it won't count because they don't believe in God.
it is often mentioned that believers who do good will be rewarded with heaven.
