"Masjid" poll
-
Peace,
I voted "other" and in my understanding, "masjid" as used in al-qur'aan means "institution of hearing and obeying".
-
Salaams All,
I think it?s the state of observance/carrying out or just submitting as phoenix
Salaam All.

good luck finding a 'consensus' on these words

Peace phoenix,
Institution is implementation which can be done only in a state of submission so they are synonymous. It is also like a government institution like congress or senate, that implements the qur'aanic laws. Thus in an islamic state, instead of congress or senate we would have "al-masjid al-haram" for implementation of the restrictions in islam, and other "masajid" that would implement laws other than the restrictions in islam.

I always perceived a masjid as place to worship. What's the scientific method of deriving meanings of words? and why couldn't it be a physical place? when you're in a 'masjid' your more than likely in a "state of submitting". If it's not a physical place what do you call the physical places that we do pray in, worship, in submit it...

Peace Sarah,

Also please see the classical arabic meanings of "masjid" under the root SJD (siin-jiim-dal) at the following link

For starters, a simple question. We know and Sunnis acknowledge the fact that the building named Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa was built during the Ummayad dynasty long after the revelation of the Qur'aan. Hence, it cannot be "al-masjid al-aqsa" talked about in Chapter 17. Even the staunchest sectarian is forced to acknowledge this fact. The question is that given this fact, and if "masjid" is a physical building, what does "al-masjid al-aqsa" mentioned in 171 refer to, when there was no physical building by that name in existence ?
171 Most glorified is the One who summoned His servant (Muhammad) during the night, from al-masjid al-haram to al-masjid al-aqsa, whose surroundings we have blessed, in order to show him some of our signs. He is the Hearer, the Seer.
- It has been made lawful for you during the night of fasting to approach your women sexually. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. The God knows that you used to betray your selves so He Has accepted your repentance, and forgiven you; now you may approach them and seek what The God Has written for you. And you may eat and drink until the white thread is distinct from the black thread of daybreak; then you shall complete the fast until night; and do not approach them WHILE you are committed in the institutions of hearing and obeying/"masajid". These are The God's boundaries, so do not transgress them. It is such that The God makes His revelations clear to the people perhaps they may be forethoughtful.
Verse 2187 actually confirms that "masjid" is an institution of hearing and obeying and not a physical Mosque/Temple. Clearly, no sane person would have sexual relations with his or her spouse WHILE in any public place, let alone the local Mosque/Temple, so this part of the sign would be meaningless if one interprets "masajid" as Mosques/Temples. The sign simply says that we shouldn't have sexual relations with our spouses while we are committed to "the institution of the hearing and obeying" (masajid) of The God (such as while we are reciting the great reading in our homes).

I didn't know that.. thanks for the links I'll have a look..
and if that's the case then Muslims are truly lost, and it's almost impossible to comprehend that the Muslims ignorance (jahliya or whatever you want to call it) has led to this, it's depressing God help us.

Salaam,
Well " All Above".
Because I'm not 100% sure therefore it can possibly be all above.
But I think Tanver's opinion/explanation is interesting though.

Peace "phoenix",

there will never be a consensus and that shouldn't even be our goal. We're not looking for a compromise on truth. Every individual should be looking for the truth regardless of what others think.JK- I strongly believe there will ultimately be consesus on the meaning of these terms and in a democratic system it is important to get the views of the majority of people and this is exactly how it needs to be done. The prob is in the past individuals never had a chance to give their options. GOD Bless!
