verse 3:85
-
can someone explain this to me?
"Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him"I looked at the PM translation which is much better because the above seemed very harsh
And whoever follows other than submission as a system, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he is of the losers.so then what do we have to do to be "submitters"/muslimeen?
so if we do not then are we doomed?

Peace ay,
Look at 569...
"Those who believe, and those who are Jewish, and the Sabiens, and the Nazarenes; whoever of them believes in God and the Last Day and does good works, then they will have nothing to fear nor will they grieve."
As pointed out in another thread, these are the minimum requirements to achieve God's grace. If you believe in God, and believe that your thoughts and actions have consequences that you will eventually face, and you pump good energy and action into this life, then you have nothing to worry about.
The ayah you quoted was 385.
The phrase used in Arabic is "ghayra al-islami deenan" - literally, "other than the 'deen' of 'islam'.
Now if you view islam as a religion, then your translation would be as you first quoted "other than the religion of Islam".
If you view islam as a state of being, then the free-minds translation fits "other than surrender as a system"
My personal understanding is "other than peace as your way"These are fundamental concepts and you should make up your mind about what these words mean by studying and cross-referencing the usage of the words throughout the qur'an. They've been discussed frequently so perhaps searching for them would do you well.
I hope I've helped.
Peace,

salam tay,
how did you reach your personal understanding of that verse if you dont mind sharing with me? Because it sounds lovely ... but islam does not mean peace -it is related - like peaces cousin or something - but if it was as you have understood it wouldnt it read "ghayra al-salami deenan"?
and yes you are helping!
thank youpeace!

Salam,
Al-Islam Deenan = obligation to submit
So many people in the world are Muslims ... they just don't know it.
