Swimsuits for muslimehs
-
....what do you think of this ?
http//news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070218/ap_on_re_us/muslim_women_swimsuits
http//www.splashgearusa.com/...splashgear is not bad confused
But really, what is everyones opinion on this swimwear issue for muslim women? I myself, used to wear a full bathing suit, but now feel self concious because of my faith, and also not sure if its right...so I haven't been swimming for years, except on my honeymoon, and my husband was upset about it. Even that I had a swim skirt over my full swimsuit. I just feel really confused on this issue, as modesty is also not about what you wear, but your hearts modesty. Question If I wore a modest swimsuit by my standards, and I had not intention to lure or seek desire out of people but merely to swim or sunbathe..is that wrong? Or should I buy this full body covering and wear it out, and not get the suntan I want, and not feel the ripples of water against my skin, all so men wont leer. Isnt it also deemed that men should be modest and lower their gaze, cant they do that for me, so I can enjoy the water, or its ok for them to wear shorts to swim, and me see their sexy calves and legs and possibly their man hair on their chests, but nooooo biggeee, I should be the one to have to cover my entire body???

I think one-piece swimsuit is fine for women and swim short for men so long as they are worn at the 'right' places like swimming pool or the beach. By the way, I find that snorkeling swimsuit pretty nice. But it is indeed unfair for Caucasian muslim women who enjoy sunbathing.

Peace to all,
I agree Honor, where what makes you comfortable without being to skimpy, you definitely should be able to feel the water on your skin and get a decent suntan, and I also agree it is our responibility as men to lower our gaze. You will know inside what is proper to wear and what is not, you dont need some ignorant man to tell you,

I agree, lately I think ....I feel so guilty...you know sometimes...I wish I could be blind...so that I could be with my husband...but I know he is not my God, so I open my heart and my soul to God, and find that this is me,....a muslim, modest woman who follows the Quran, and leads my life by the Quran...not by Hadiths, and sunni tyrants..and by my husband who so foolishly has turned his back on me.
I have hijab, I have islamic clothes, prayer clothes etc....but none of that is me, and I never felt it necessary. I am a modest woman, and I act modest. That is what i think is important. I know that I dont need a ignorant man to dictate what I wear...but I guess...I needed to hear that.
You see....did you all know that I just got married to my husband in May 2006? Yeah...and he left me a few months after our wedding because he insisted that I wear hijab, pray to muhammad, not wear perfume, not allow any of our future children play instruments ( I have no children) etc etc....and yet he and I dated for two years before we were married, we used to play pool in public pool houses, swim, work out at the gym, dance in the livingroom to trance music......he was my best friend...and then it was like something snapped inside of him..
He tries somewhat to keep our marriage, but only when he thinks I am going to give in to all these demands...and the sad part is, that I am here, always waiting hoping that he'll come to his senses, and we'll have our life back, the married life we were supposed to have.
He only calls when he wants, and sometimes wont return my calls for weeks, just now I found out he was in another country!!! This is my husband!! I dont even know where he lives, he wont tell me. He comes by all the time, to make up, act like he loves me wants to keep our marriage, he'll even stay over night, but then he turns into a tyrant usually within 2 or more days of happiness..he'll become this stranger...and he'll threaten to divorce me all over again.
He wont divorce me,because he claims to love me, but he'll use me, then threaten to leave me if I dont submit to his way of life...but I never understand it because he wasn't like this, this fanatic and abusive.....
So you see....that is why...I sometimes...I feel so compelled to wear these suits, hijab..etc...because...I was pure, and married for the first time,..and now...I am empty..and left...hollow..and devastated.

It seems if he did not follow such an extreme view of Islam, he would make a very good partner. By the way, he is Saudi Arabian, right?

I think so, even though your intention is good, actions matter also. A swimsuit will automatically attract attention no matter how slim sexy or fat you are. It attratcs attention even if your intention is otherwise. So how is it modest?
Besides I've never seen a modest swimsuit, it doesn't really cover the breasts.
I wear hijab, I still swim why limit yourself because of your dress?

Salam Sarah~
I do not wear hijab, even that I own lots. No, I am modest without the neccessity of covering my hair and wearing islamic clothing. It is very possible to cover your entire chest to your neck, and your legs to your ankles, and your sleeves to your elbows and longer, without wearing hijab, and other islamic clothing. I personally would not wear a islamic suit in the pool, for several reasons none of which matter. But, My full bathing suit is modest. It covers all my chest to my collar bones,at the very base of my neck, and it is not high cut, but actually very very modest. And I also wear a bathing suit skirt around it, so that my legs are only exposed from the knees down. Whether that causes men to still look, because part of my legs are exposed and my arms, I dont really want to care. You see, I feel that in my heart I am modest, and definitely modest beyond modest standards in the US. I think whats important is that I feel modest, and I do. But, like I said, even I am self concious at times, I think for me, I may limit where I where a swimsuit. For instance, I may wear it at a low-key beach but not at a busy swimming pool, and I may where it a pool where mainly the people are women, but not a pool where its obvious its just young men, looking to leer. So I can use my head to know when I feel its appropriate and when its not. But I respect your decision.

Peace to all,
I feel so sad for you sister, i dont think it would be right for me to give you too much advice that you may act upon in your vulnerable state your in now,, it sounds like your in a very emotional time in your life and I will pray that you figure things out for yourself. Just dont be afraid to be you, follow what you truely believe to be good and acceptable by God and you will be ok, God willing,
I can honestly say that I know what your going through, I too am married and my wife is threatening me with divorce all the time because i tell her im a muslim, she thinks im nuts literally, we were both raised roman catholics our entire life, i was very devout and so is she, but then I left when I discovered true Islam,, I honestly believe God guided me to him and the Quran... my family is shocked, my friends think im crazy too,, i have never even met a muslim before and there are none were I live, but i know it is the truth, i also believe that the same spirit of truth of God that led me to Islam and Quran has also led me to stay away from the hadeeth, i have never been happier and content in my life, even though my world seems to be falling apart as i knew it, the more real i get the more unreal the world gets, I really love my wife but if she keeps up her threats it is hurting me emotionally and is breaking the bond that our hearts once had, we also have children and she threatens to take them away from me unless i come back to Jesus and the church, which will never happen God willing,
so sister Honor, please have patience and do what you think will be acceptable by God just dont take things to fast and make too big of decisions while your in an emotional state,
I hope your husband can come to understand that you are a good and decent person that believes in God and is a good Muslim, what else does he really think you need besides this, if he were sincere and truthful he would understand,
take care sister Honor

Salam IronSky~
Oh...how I feel you group. Your right, I am extremely vulnerable and emotional. I am a total wreck. You know, my family is very devout babtists, we even have 3 priests in our family, not to mention my father was a pastor ...but thats a whole other story. My family and friends freaked when I became a muslim, and they saw it coming and tried to stop it, but little could they keep me from the true path. I completely feel you, I feel like my soul is in a state of truth and stability, and yet my life is in total chaos.
I was never married before, and I wanted to save myself in that sacredness for my one and only husband, And now look at me. I am humiliating my family, they try to be supportive, but at my grandparents 65th wedding anniversary, they all acted like nothing was wrong, that my husband had'nt left me, because they didn't want the distant relatives to ask why, because then they would have to say because of their religion!! Sheesh!
Of course, we know its not our religions fault...its that our loved ones, cannot open their eyes, or at least allow us to keep ours open.
My husband is a muslim, and yet he wants to divorce me for not being his kind of muslim. I am so sad for you Kurt, as I know you must feel like you have lost your best friend, lover, wife....you need her tolerance more than anything. Even if she cannot understand you want her acceptance. Thats what I need acceptance.
Let us pray, I pray for you, you for me, we pray for them, for us..
Thank you for all your kind words, it means alot from someone I have never met group

Peace Honor,
I know how you feel, I haven't swim for many many years even if I like it.
But I don't know if I will buy swimsuit for muslimahs though, they don't look so nice and I think people will notice us more with that on than without them, don't you think!?
In Malaysia were my ex hubbie comes from, the ladies use to swim and bath in their sarongs and t-shirts and that's normal there no one look.
But it depends of course where you are living and how many muslims who are there at the beach.
One other option if you want to be tanned is that you do that in your garden and better off if you have a swimming pool.
Peace

honor with the fear of comming off as a troll. You need to get your head sorted, this guy has no respect for your choices, meaning the person that you are. From the look of it what happens is that he is all nice untill he "win the prize", then turn over to the culture so settled in him that i am not sure it could even be beaten out. Culture doesnt have to be a bad thing at all, and finding some sense of unity in a common ancestrys behaviour is a choice many wonderfull people have taken, my own wife included. But when these traditions remove fundamental freedoms from other people than themself, then they are unacceptable obviously.
Altso, do you want to be somebodys wife, or somebodys partner. It has become, unfortunally, that there is a great distance between the two, that i think was never intended. He has learned on an instinctual level to love you as an object, as a possesion of his, and it is unfortunally something thati find is a dominant phenomena in most cultures.
Have you reminded him that there are no compulsion in religion and that the right way has been made obvious from the wrong way?. Have to taken the conversation with him like this. "are you telling me that im a bad muslim for doing what the Quran teaches, as opposed to what 4 human beings like me decided it tought several hundred of years ago? who gave them that authority, and where is the evidence?"
as for the swimming suit, looks good i will pass the link )
best wishes

Peace,
Well said Noah.
You are right that many men they want to have a gorgeous woman as their wife, they want to possess her and forgot that she is a living being and have thoughts and rights
And I must say that I have ponder about this about modesty and the fact we are born nude and we were nude until we got knowledge and became aware that we were nude and search for something to cover our private parts with.
So if we cover our private parts and at the same time are modest in our minds then it's must be enough, right!?
Why all this freaking out of clothes and what to wear all the time, why not spend our precious time on something more important.
And I must say that i don't find a strangers nude body as sexy and something to keep staring at but the opposite I will low down my gaze and become shy to look.
If both men and women dressed at the beach in shorts and a t-shirt it will be fine and fair, don't you think!?
Peace Sis Majidah
