        Peace Natu,

Do you know of any other one worthy of idolising?

And "ilah" comes from from the root Lam Hae alif, which means "taking one's attention"... Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

          Peace JK, Someone.

Thats the thing, I don't fully understand the word idolatry. If we idolise the God, is idolatry a bad thing altogether?

I'm trying to work out exactly what idolatry is. confused

I thought that Idolatry was physical items that people worshipped.

Lost philosopher idolatry is a very complex subject.

The definition varies in different religions/sects.

Some people have a very narrow definition of idolatry (limited to the one you pointed out) and some have a very complex definition of idolatry.

              God bless

                Peace,
As far as i know "idolatry" comes from "idol" meaning an object which is adored or esteemed very strongly. And on GOD should our focus lie so theres nothing wrong. GOD Bless!

In a nut shell that is what it means. The link I provided just elaborates on that point.

I also believe the following is idolatry
-believing in an untrue ?perception? about the nature of Allah is idolatry. (i.e. believing that Allah is whimsical dictator)
-claiming man-made law is divine law & vice versa is idolatry.
-Serving anyone/thing other than Allah is idolatry (i.e. serving your emotions, ego, before your creator) However this should not be confused with serving people, by serving (decent) people we are serving Allah.

                  • Not trying to emulate Allah?s attributes is idolatry

Now this is a tough and controversial one
Supporting a government/political system that is contrary to the Quranic ideology (i.e. a government that violates human rights).

But we are all trapped in the system implemented in our country.

Here in the UK our government is a violator of international law and a systematic condoner of human rights abuses, as well as a key ally of many repressive regimes. Under Blair?s government, Britain has become a champion of a form of globalisation that is increasing the takeover of the global economy by big business, and far from changing course post-September 11th, British policies are partly responsible for the continuation - and often deepening - of global poverty and inequality, while its arms exports and nuclear policies are making the world a more dangerous place. The immorality of British policy in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Iraq and Indonesia; effective support for repressive state policies of Israel, Russia, Turkey and the Gulf states; acquiescence in the Rwanda genocide; and the deepening of poverty-increasing economic policies through the World Trade Organisation. British complicity in the slaughter of a million people in Indonesia; the depopulation of the island of Diego Garcia; the overthrow of governments in Iran and British Guiana; repressive colonial policies in Kenya and Malaya; etc. is against Quranic law.

Violating human rights abroad is just as normal as having a cup of tea for our government. voodoo

Every time I buy something from a shop I contribute to the system (due to tax on those goods), the taxed money will end up paying for another bomb which will kill many civilians in Iraq/Afghanistan. Now that is idolatry, because I am serving contrary to what Allah wants me to serve.

497 Those whose lives are terminated by the angels, while in a state of wronging their souls, the angels will ask them, "What was the matter with you?" They will say, "We were oppressed on earth." They will say, "Was GOD's earth not spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?" For these, the final abode is Hell, and a miserable destiny.

498 Exempted are the weak men, women, and children who do not possess the strength, nor the means to find a way out.

However my government does not violate human rights in my country (well not often anyway) so I continue to support them. If I don?t speak up against Britain?s unjust foreign policies then I am supporting them, and I believe that is idolatry.

                  peace

                    Peace Angel, all,

Supporting a government/political system that is contrary to the Quranic ideology (i.e. a government that violates human rights).

If I don?t speak up against Britain?s unjust foreign policies then I am supporting them, and I believe that is idolatry.

                    Forced actions are not idolatry

16106 Whoever rejects God after having believed; except for one who is forced while his heart is still content with belief; and has opened his chest to rejection, then they will have a wrath from God and they will have a great retribution.

Not speaking out publicly against those who oppress others or not taking action to put an end to their oppression of others out of fear for one's own life or freedom, and when one is not properly prepared to undertake such actions, is not the same as supporting them, especially if one is trapped in their system. It is what is in the heart that matters. However, I agree that when one is being oppressed DIRECTLY, and does not have the resources to fight back, one should emigrate provided one has the means/resources to do so and is not weak.

Idolatry is setting up any kind of partners with The God, for example one's ego

4523 Have you seen the one who took his ego as his god, and God led him astray, despite his knowledge, and He sealed his hearing and his heart, and He made a veil on his eyes? Who then can guide him after God? Will you not remember?

Tanveer in England we have freedom of speech.

What I meant was that if I did not take the opportunity to speak out against my government then I am committing shirk. And by verbally opposing / protesting against them I am not supporting them.

                          Peace Brother Natu,

It is not a weird question, but an important topic that everyone should sink into.

A man's mind is the part that comes closest to god, however it is the very same part that keeps him at a distance from god.

None of us are seeing god in its entirety, but bits of pieces of it. The Quran concludes on several occasions that "in these are signs for those who ponder" in reference to natural phenomena. This passage serves as a perfect example

                          Free Minds 2164
Surely, in the creation of heavens and Earth, and the differences between night and day, and the ships that sail in the sea for the benefit of mankind, and what God has sent down of water from the sky so He brings the Earth back to life after it had died, and He sent forth from it every creature, and the movement of the winds and the clouds that have been designated between the Earth and the sky are signs for a people that understand.

Our knowledge of god comes through these events of nature, and our perception of god is therefore directly related to our knowledge of these events. If our understanding is flawed, or incomplete (which it unavoidably is), then so is our perception of god.

Would it then be responsible to idolize a god, who's picture is so distorted in your mind?

One trait of the rejector-personality as described in the Quran, is that they blame their evil acts on god by saying that "God told us to do it".

                          Free Minds 728
And if they commit evil acts, they Say "We found our fathers doing such, and God ordered us to it." Say "God does not order evil! Do you say about God what you do not know?"

Are you going to follow their example, and idolize a god who's image you put together from whatever knowledge you have, and thus inevitable idolize yourself?

                          Nadeem

                            Okay,

Say you are in Saudi Arabia with ten other people in your group and unfortunately one member steals a purse/money belonging to someone.
He tell the police who ask you guys "did anyone see who stole it?" you know the law the poor guy's hand will be chopped off - and assuming you don't believe in this law but serve Allah/Truth as your idol ,you will tell.

So the poor mans hand will be cut off.

Was that/ is that serving Allah?

Or won't you serve the truth/the idol in this case?

                            God Bless All.

                                Peace all,

Some thoughts to share on this!

Why does GOD keep identifying HIMSELF with names?

HE says I am THE MOST COMPASSIONATE. Why does GOD tries to make a picture of HIMSELF ? Why does HE simply not give 1001 instructions to humans and keep quiet over HIMSELF?

The reason is that GOD wants you to train your mind/ heart such that they can construct a vision OF GOD through VIRTUES! Through LOVE! An empty space within yourself which is not made of matter but made of GOODNESS, KNOWING, LOVE, UNITY, LIFE, PRESENCE, AFFECTION, EXPANSION, WISDOM, ???????

There is a big difference between believing and faith.

You do not believe that sun is shiny! Why? Because you know it! That is faith. It is a knowing. Only a blind man needs to believe that sun is shiny. He becomes content with what the others say.

Faith in GOD is like a seed! Once your mind brings you to a point which it can allow you to look into your heart. then there is a need to construct this space / this image! The vision of GOD! And make that the most dearest to your heart. The seed will grow and it will transform you. Love of GOD can happen to you. This LOVE is not attainable, when one reaches the needed level, it will be GIVEN.

Praise that vision! Make it sacred! and refine it every morning and night It will transmute you! Human awareness becomes affected by that which he puts his attention and intentions on.

                                Peace,

                                  So Jan,

if you was around in Hitlers time and and you knew a jew and the S.A.S come along and ask you "Are there any jews here?" so presumably you will tell them the truth even though you know what will happen to that individual, will you?

So is one supposed to serve the truth idol in this case or is one supposed to look into their heart and decide?

                                  Thanks.

                                  And God Bless.

                                    Peace,

Man your words keep touching me. Please tell me there is a book or anything you think I should start with. I want to give it a try. You already provided me with a link of some audio files but some of them do not work... I can't download them. Thanks, thanks, many thanks.

                                    Peace,
                                    FJ

Peace be upon your heart FJ,

Remember my friend, Devotion on the path is the first condition. THE END IS ALWAYS PRESENT IN THE BEGINNING. Persist in your devotion and it will be GIVEN.

The real audio files are all downloadable. I used a free software called Switch to change them to mp3 format. The text documents are also very rich.
