The selfish gene

I have got Richard Dawkins book "the selfish gene", I?ve not read much of it yet, but apparently it?s been proven to be false (oh so I have been told), is this true?

Well, Dawkins' 'selfish gene' is a metaphorical concept to help people understand how altruistic behaviour can evolve, so... I don't know if it can be 'proven false' or not. IMHO it is helpful in evolution discussions. But whether genes are actually selfish, I don't know.
