OK, 55 only allows for chaste women of the people of book. That verse doesn't give permission to Muslim women to marry men of the people of the book...

Yusuf Ali This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time,- when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good).

Pickthal This day are (all) good things made lawful for you. The food of those who have received the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And so are the virtuous women of the believers and the virtuous women of those who received the Scripture before you (lawful for you) when ye give them their marriage portions and live with them in honour, not in fornication, nor taking them as secret concubines. Whoso denieth the faith, his work is vain and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.

Arberry Today the good things are permitted you, and the food of those who were given the Book is permitted to you, and permitted to them is your food; Likewise believing women in wedlock, and in wedlock women of them who were given the Book before you if you give them their wages, in wedlock and not in licence, or as taking lovers. Whoso disbelieves in the faith, his work has failed, and in the world to come he shall be among the losers.

Shakir This day (all) the good things are allowed to you; and the food of those who have been given the Book is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them; and the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste from among those who have been given the Book before you (are lawful for you); when you have given them their dowries, taking (them) in marriage, not fornicating nor taking them for paramours in secret; and whoever denies faith, his work indeed is of no account, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.

Sarwar On this day, all pure things are made lawful for you (as food). The food of the People of the Book is made lawful for you and your food is made lawful for them. It is lawful for you to marry chaste Muslim women and chaste women of the People of the Book, provided, you pay their dowry, maintain chastity, and avoid fornication or lustful relations outside of marriage. The deeds of anyone who rejects the faith, certainly, become fruitless. He will be of those who lose on the Day of Judgment.

Khalifa Today, all good food is made lawful for you. The food of the people of the scripture is lawful for you. Also, you may marry the chaste women among the believers, as well as the chaste women among the followers of previous scripture, provided you pay them their due dowries. You shall maintain chastity, not committing adultery, nor taking secret lovers. Anyone who rejects faith, all his work will be in vain, and in the Hereafter he will be with the losers.

Hilali/Khan Made lawful to you this day are AtTayyibat (all kinds of Halal (lawful) foods, which Allah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, etc., milk products, fats, vegetables and fruits, etc.). The food (slaughtered cattle, eatable animals, etc.) of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) is lawful to you and yours is lawful to them. (Lawful to you in marriage) are chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) before your time, when you have given their due Mahr (bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage), desiring chastity (i.e. taking them in legal wedlock) not committing illegal sexual intercourse, nor taking them as girl-friends. And whosoever disbelieves in the Oneness of Allah and in all the other Articles of Faith (i.e. His (Allahs), Angels, His Holy Books, His Messengers, the Day of Resurrection and AlQadar (Divine Preordainments)), then fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.

H/K/Saheeh This day good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking lovers. And whoever denies the faith his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.

Malik Today all good clean things have been made lawful for you; and the food of the People of the Book is also made lawful for you and your food is made lawful for them. Likewise, marriage with chaste free believing women and also chaste women among the People who were given the Book before you is made lawful for you, provided that you give them their dowries and desire chastity, neither committing fornication nor taking them as mistresses. Anyone who commits Kufr with Iman (rejects the rules provided by faith), all his good deeds will be in vain and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.

QXP This Day, all good food of your choice is made Lawful for you. The food of the People of the Scripture is Lawful for you. And your food is Lawful for them. You are permitted to marry chaste women of the People of the Scripture, (provided they do not indulge in SHIRK i.e. not associate anyone with Allah (2221)). You are permitted to marry the virtuous, chaste women among the believers and the virtuous, chaste women of those who were given the Scripture before. You must give your brides a generous marital gift and live with them in honor, not in fornication as secret lovers. (It must be an honest wedlock (424)). Anyone who rejects belief, all his work will go vain and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.

Maulana Ali This day (all) good things are made lawful for you. And the food of those who have been given the Book is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And so are the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste from among those who have been given the Book before you, when you give them their dowries, taking (them) in marriage, not fornicating nor taking them for paramours in secret. And whoever denies faith, his work indeed is vain; and in the Hereafter he is of the losers.

Qaribullah The good things have this day been made lawful to you. The food of those to whom the Book was given is lawful to you, and your food is lawful to them. Lawful to you (in marriage) are the free believing women and the free women from among those who were given the Book before you, provided that you give them their dowries in marriage, neither committing fornication nor taking them as mistresses. Whosoever denies the belief, his labors will be annulled. In the Everlasting Life he is of the losers.

George Sale This day are ye allowed to eat such things as are good, and the food of those to whom the scriptures were given is also allowed as lawful unto you; and your food is allowed as lawful unto them. And ye are also allowed to marry free women that are believers, and also free women of those who have received the scriptures before you, when ye shall have assigned them their dower; living chastly with them, neither committing fornication, nor taking them for concubines. Whoever shall renounce the faith, his work shall be vain, and in the next life he shall be of those who perish.

JM Rodwell This day, things healthful are legalised to you, and the meats of those who have received the Scriptures are allowed to you, as your meats are to them. And you are permitted to marry virtuous women who are believers, and virtuous women of those who have received the scriptures before you ...

Asad Today, all the good things of life have been made lawful to you. And the food of those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime is lawful to you,' and your food is lawful to them. And , in wedlock, women from among those who believe , and, in wedlock, women from among those who have been vouchsafed revelation before your time -provided that you give them their dowers, taking them in honest wedlock, not in fornication, nor as secret love-companions. '5 But as for him who rejects belief - in vain will be all his works for in the life to come he shall be among the lost.

Hence proved Only chaste women of the people of the book are lawful and the verse doesn't give permission for their men. Next part of the verse further clarifies that the permission is given only to believing men "when ye give them their due dowers" ..... Now let us see your translation.....

    Peace

You still did not reply to my answer, because you keep bolding the part that does not concern the addressee.

To make it even simpler and more direct, verse 55 starts with

This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you and the food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them

My comment on the translation is that the whole verse is one sentence, connected by "and". There shouldn't be any full stop, but that's another story.

I have highlighted and undelined "you", which is the addressee. Now back to my question How do you translate/understand this you Is it for males only or for a mixture of males and females?

I do not want to discuss both options because I want to avoid a lengthy message. I want to discuss the option given to me and the reason why it is chosen over the other.

              Salaam Rumi

I meant their belief regarding Jesus being the son of God, or their altered books. I do not know what the main differences are between the sects you mentioned whether christians or jews regarding the principles of their religions.

Salam Samia, Sorry for the late reply.

With regards to what you've said, then I guess the fundamental beliefs of Christianity has remained the same, Jesus being the son of God.

But On the same token as what you've said about the basic beliefs, I guess Sunnis, Shias, Wahabbis, Sufis, Quranites are all to be considered believers, because they all claim to believe in God, The Quran and the prophet?

Also, as to what you've said this also where the similarities in belief end with regards to the belief of Jesus being the son of God in Christianity. There are distinct and huge schisms amongst the various denominations of Christianity and to a lesser degree Judaism, there are huge differences of beliefs and practice. Christians have discriminated and fought wars against their own denominations, similar to Muslims actually.

So who are the People of the Book? All people who call themselves Jews and Chrisitians?? The Christians and Jews during the time that the Quran was revealed, or the present day Christians ones who have been influenced by the likes of Constantine, Martin Luther and the Vatican? Influenced perhaps to the extent of Idolatry, saying Hail Mary, worshiping Jesus?

But if I ask the above question, I should also ask Who are the Believers, all who call themselves Muslims, believe God and the Quran???? Are Sunnis to be considered believers when some of the them truely believe that by blowing themselves up they would get 72 Virgins in Paradise? Are these guys seriously to be considered as believers, when they believe in sources other than the Quran, when they commit heinous crimes such as suicide and murder of innocents by the detonating explosives on their bodies????

Everyone is asking a lot of questions in the thread but we're not getting many answers to them.

I agree with your post. This is in line with my first post on this thread where I asked about the definition of a believer, not just who is mushrik or who is a person of the book. As I said, we cannot generalize. Each case is to be taken individually. I personally know non believers who are otherwise muslims, but would only admit that within their safe circles (of which I am one for some). I wont allow my daughter/son to marry into them, although they are officially muslims, and might be known by the majority as muslims. This is an example of what I mean by taking cases individually.

For me these are hypocrites. No, I wont let my kids marry hypocrites, and they will not want to.

I agree. With regards to your experiences of non-believers, it sounds like Quran 28 "Of the people there are some who say "We believe in Allah and the Last Day;" but they do not (really) believe." and Quran 29 "Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not!"

There is no way to know for sure.. Even on an individual basis. Hypothetically from your experience, if you weren't part of their inner circle, these people would seem Muslim, correct? I guess this is where trust, belief and faith in ones future partner comes in, as a parent, even more so, you'll have to take their word. As long as to the best of your knowledge, the person fits the Qurans criteria, its the best anyone can do. Whether he is or is not a believer or a person of the book, it's another story.

So, personal question to the thread starter, is this Sikh guy really a believer??? Sikh's believe in One Universal God, but don't believe in heaven or hell, or the Quran. They're followers of Guru Nana, not our Prophet so I don't think they fall under believers. Can the Sikh guy really fall into the Quranic criterion's of marriage?
