Hi, Salaam, is it permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a Sikh man? Believing women should marry believers, as stated in the Qur'an. But if the man believes in One True God (as is the case with Sikhism), is he considered a believer, according to the Qur'an? Your insight is appreciated. Jazak'Allah khair.

      Salaam

God prohibits marrying mushriks (idolators) and encourages marrying people of the Book. Believers are either contained within the "people of the book" or they are a third and seperate category.

As for sikhs, this depends on the definition of "believers", and also where you think they fit better in any of the three categories.

If your question is specific to some person, you can not generalize. The "definition" nowadays of a muslim is "someone whose father is muslim", or "a convert who has been issued a certificate of islamization". Each individiual case is to be taken by its face value. You can't just generalize not all "muslims" or "Christians" or even sikhs are the same.

Wa salaam, wow, jazak'Allah khair for your response. What you said makes a lot of sense. Just because someone has a label of "Muslim" or "Christian" does not mean they adhere to all the mainstream principles of their faith. For example, my dad calls himself a "Christian" but he doesn't believe Jesus (pbuh) is the son of God, and he only reads the Original Testament (the Torah, not the Gospels). And he prays to God alone, not to Jesus (pbuh). Jewish people say there are Christians like this, yet there are Christians who reject what my dad does.

As long as the guy does not pray to idols or believes in idol-worshipping, yet just maintains his label (ie, Sikh, etc) for sake of his parents & family background, that would seem all right to me, I suppose. But the big thing is, whether he would be okay with raising the children to read the Qur'an and believe in Muhammad (pbuh) as a messenger of God, which is important to me. What do you all think?

It is absolutely forbidden for any Muslim, male or female, to marry a Sikh. The Holy Quran only gives permission to Muslim men to marry Christian and Jewish women, but even that is discouraged.

Quran clearly says DO NOT Marry the MUSHRIKS AND MUSHRIKAHS and whoever says marrying Mushriks doesn't matter is a clear cut liar.

                http//www.submission.org/efarsi/arabic/Surat2_files/2_221.gif

And do not marry the MUSHRIKAHS until they believe, and certainly a believing maid is better than a MUSHRIKAH, even though she should please you; and do not give (believing women) in marriage to MUSHRIKS until they believe, and certainly a believing servant is better than a MUSHRIK, even though he should please you; these invite to the fire, and Allah invites to the garden and to forgiveness by His will, and makes clear His communications to men, that they may be mindful.

We should know what is shirk and who is a Mushrik, I totally agree with the following people

I like to point out the meanings of SHIRK is actually abandoning the commandment with God.
There are also "Thou shall not steal" commandment and "Thou shall not commit murder" etc...
Thus one who steal (a thief) or murderer is also a MUSHRIK. (SHIRK-ing from his/her commandment with God)
MUSHRIK is not only applied to those who are worshipping idols but also to anyone who forgot / abandon his/her commandment with God.

                I totally agree with Jafar.

Remember the case of Satan. He nither disbelieved in God nor did he set an idol to worship. He just disregarded the command of God and considered his own logic to be better to follow. Thus when we disrespect any of God's Commandment, because we believe that it is not practical, or it is better that way, or for any reason without acknowledging that we were doing wrong, then we are setting partners (our own reasoning)with God .

?MUSHRIK? = Idol worshiper or idolater = One who ascribes partners to Allah = Who ascribes divinity besides Him = Who associates others with Him = Who invents or acknowledges authorities parallel to Him = Sets up idols in any form = Who side-lines Divine Revelation in favor of manmade books or themes = Who worships his desire = Hero worshiper = A sectarian = Whoever hopes for any dead humans or saints to help him = Ancestor worshiper = Who ascribes children to God = A believer in intercession by angels or humans = Who seeks Divine Guidance outside the Final Revelation = A subscriber or claimant to mysticism or clairvoyance = Who believes in created beings having Divine Powers = Accepts ultimate law-givers other than Allah = Prostrates before tyrants or ?holy? men.

We have been brainwashed into believing that muslims cannot be mushriks, and thus people indulged in all kinds of shirk because "they cannot be mushriks". But as RasulHamsa well put it

                12106

And most of them do not believe in Allah without associating others (with Him).

                muslims can be mushriks.

Note My apologies if someone feels I have wrongly quoted him/her, feel free to correct. But no marriages with MUSHRIKS/MUSHRIKAHS whatsoever, that would be clearly against the quran if someone finds no problem in that. It is also prohibited to marry anyone who is an adulterer or an adulteress.

                Peace

Could it be that prohibitions on marrying so called 'kafirs' or 'mushriks' applied only at a time when the non-muslims were hostile to muslims and/or certain fundamental islamic principles? What is the spirit of these verses? If a non muslim is tolerant of the people of islamic faith and agrees/follows some of the islamic principles, then what is the problem? Me thinks this is a tribal purity and control issue?
Why did pharoahs wife (a believer.) not divorce him? And why did lot not divorce his non-believing wife?

and where does quran encourage to marry people of the book?

(Quran 55) This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time,- when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good). Translation by Yusof Ali

God has told us to marry not only believers but also people of the book.

The next Question to ask, who are "believers" and who are the "People of the Book"? Are Shias, Sunnis, Alawites, Druze, Sufis, Ahmadis to be considered believers or is it just Quranists? Are People of the Book the Catholics, Orthodox, Protestant, Jewish Orthodox, Haredi, Hasedic, Karaite??

I think it's pure survival tbh, it follows that if everyone is restricted to marrying someone who shares the same beliefs, that gorup of people with beliefs will grow exponentially.

God prohibits marrying mushriks (idolators) and encourages marrying people of the Book.

                        Salam,

I agree but I have spoken to some who think that there are no more the "people of the book", since the Christians and Jews are now idolaters. It's not longer about God anymore, but about worshiping Jebus or Mary at the alter or bowing to a wall of an ancient and destroyed temple. Perhaps this is why in Malaysia a Muslim cannot marry a non Muslim, be they Jew or Christian, Muslims can ONLY marry a Muslim according to our Sharia Law. Personally I don't know, as long as they believe in The God, or have faith in the Books before, as per Quran 55, then it should be fine to marry as the Quran has stated.

Concerning Idolaters, If you can't marry a Catholic because she says her hail mary's, then for the same reason you shouldn't be able to marry a Sunni for they say salat an-nabi during their prayers to God, accompanying God's words with the hadith. Clear cut idolaters are those who worship Buddha, the many Hindu Gods and the like. But is a sunni really an Idolater? One of the links Jankren posted asks this.. http//free-minds.org/forum/index.php?topic=13884.0 Where a wife says that her husband views holding our prophet Muhammad, is actually the only Idol "allowed" for Muslims. EeeKkk!!

And as RasulHamsa has posted quoting Sister Samia, Muslims can be Mushriks!!

If I really can't marry a Sunni, a Jew, a Christian because of Idolatry, then I really need to be dating one of you sisters!! But then again, the Quran has allowed me to marry the People of the Book!! hmm Ohh ye People of the Book and believers please show yourselves!!!

I do not know who the people of the book are. Aren't we, too, people of Book? How does the qur'aan address people who believed in the qur'aan and accepted Muhammad's prophithood?

If the people of the book mentioned in this verse are the christians and jews, then they are also the christians and the jews of our time, because their belief we know now was also the same when the qur'aan was revealed. There were no different christians and jews then.

I disagree with the part that I've made in bold. Christianity to a greater part and Judaism to a lesser part has changed since the Quran was revealed to us. The Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church came into being about 400 years after our prophets death. Protestantism is relatively new, it came into being only a couple of hundred years ago. Jewish Hasidism was founded in the late 1600's, the Haskalah and Reform Judaism in the 18th century, Karaite Judaism founded sometime after Islam (correct me if I'm wrong on the last one). The Jews and Christians now, to some degree are different to those when the Quran was revealed.

I meant their belief regarding Jesus being the son of God, or their altered books. I do not know what the main differences are between the sects you mentioned whether christians or jews regarding the principles of their religions.

There is nothing like encouragement in verse 55! And also it doesn't allow women to marry men among the people of the book.

                                This is Encouragement and prohibition

"2221 And do not marry the MUSHRIKAHS until they believe, and certainly a believing maid is better than a MUSHRIKAH, even though she should please you; and do not give (believing women) in marriage to MUSHRIKS until they believe, and certainly a believing servant is better than a MUSHRIK, even though he should please you; these invite to the fire, and Allah invites to the garden and to forgiveness by His will, and makes clear His communications to men, that they may be mindful."

And also verse says only for the chaste women not otherwise. 55 chaste women among the People of the Book

3110 You are the best of the nations raised up for (the benefit of) men; you enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong and believe in Allah; and if the followers of the Book had believed it would have been better for them; of them (some) are believers and most of them are transgressors.

According to 3110 I think only those people of the book can be lawful who are not MUSHRIKS but are believers and not among the majority who are transgressors.

54-5 They ask you as to what is allowed to them. Say The good things are allowed to you, and what you have taught the beasts and birds of prey, training them to hunt-- you teach them of what Allah has taught you-- so eat of that which they catch for you and mention the name of Allah over it; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is swift in reckoning. This day (all) the good things are allowed to you; and the food of those who have been given the Book is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them; and the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste from among those who have been given the Book before you (are lawful for you); when you have given them their dowries, taking (them) in marriage, not fornicating nor taking them for paramours in secret; and whoever denies faith, his work indeed is of no account, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.

These verses are clearly telling the believers/Muslims what is lawful for them, and people of the book cannot be other than jews and christians. Whats the problem in that?

These verses are clearly telling the believers/Muslims what is lawful for them, and people of the book cannot be other than jews and christians. Whats the problem in that?

Who do you mean by believers/muslims? Both genders or just males?
