longtime lurker here. a little background on me 1st generation american, family sunni but very very cultural and not very practicing. i mean fasting during ramadan was a must and eids were always big family festivities. mosques was for men only. praying the salat is normal for the older family members as is hijab. but women and girls are expected to be modest. lots of sexist thinking. guys were free to do what they want while us gals were homebound and had to make sure we didnt shame the family name. i got engaged (arranged) straight out of high school and got married a year later.
that is what i thought was islam at this point in my life. when i got married, my husband's family is traditional conservative sunni. big shock to me. i was the only woman not wearing hijab in his immediate family, not praying, etc. my husband though was not very practicing. but mashaallah we were (and still are D) a good match. even though at times he drives me crazy, i love him (for many reasons) and he loves me. and i am so grateful for everything in my life past and present.
lol i got off topic there. ok so there i was, an islamicly ignorant muslim girl...visiting ME with hubby for months at a time, and learning more and more about islam (or what i thought was islam). i started doing my own studying...and at first i would try and convince myself about things that didnt sit right with me. after a while i realized what a hypocrite i was. long story short...Quran only is the only thing that makes sense to me. i dont want to waste my time with figuring out a way for certain traditions to be logical and just when i have so much to learn from the Quran.
now i am at a place where i want to have more structured learning and studying of the Quran. i am using 4 translations that i read (start with The Message i downloaded from here) . i finally got the courage to go to the local mosque and they have Quran classes there (and even though they will use hadiths i think it will still be very beneficial and educational) and they are willing to give me private arabic lessons. mashaallah they were very nice to me. but i am not stressing too much to learn arabic...i have to take that slow. i am much more motivated to understand more the message rather than the language. i would appreciate any tips, advice or tools you guys have regarding studying the Quran. or even some other websites (besides this one of course). i use studyquran.org for the three translations (or more when needed).

lol is that your site? i've been using it for a while now....come to think of it i probably got the link from lurking here .
i use the yusuf ali, pickthall and shakir translations....the one with the side by side translations. so helpful that way when trying to understand something particular. i got use to reading it and still have it flow.peace

Welcome to the forum Farrah. You might want to study the quran at a comfortable pace and kind of peal away the layers of understanding as you become more attuned to the teachings of the quran.

It is always interesting to see how people find their way. I sometimes worry that new people will be exposed to an extereme and form of quran alone. But I know now that anybody that God wants to guide won't be mislead. In my day it was quite simple, in a way exciting, but now it's all about conspiracies.
The same way traditionalist tell you that Quran is difficult to understand in an effort to get you to accept their understanding. Some quranists will use the same tactics by drawing you in to arguments over word play and other techniques for which I have no words but the locals here no what I am talking about.
However, sometimes you have to take an exteremist approach, bounce between two exteremes to find the middle ground. Like when you go on a diet!
I think examples of the prophets show they initially cut themselves of from everything and slowly slowly found their way back in.
So to start with you completely abandon Bukhari & co and traditional thought, only then can unlock the Quran. Once you have studied it enough and have strong faith, you can approach other sources.
The Quran gives you tools and criteria by which to judge everything else. It gives you strength not to get hypnotised again by 1400 years best practice propoganda.
But remember, In your life you will find the answers to many of your questions among people you dislike and among the unlikeliest sources. They have been put their deliberately by God to test your tolerance and your faith. The following is a good example by you.

Keep increasing your knowledge - study everything as a subject and the only the quran as religion.
