The sectarians seem to think it is obligatory before handling it. If you ask them why, they will immediately point to the following verses
They will tell you that the words "yamassuhu" and "mutahharoon" in 5679 mean "touch" and "clean", respectively.
Hence, they translate the verses as such{It is an honorable Qur'an.
In a protected book.
None can touch it except those who are clean}Meaning You must perform ablution (wudu' before touching it , or else... &
As for merely reading it, I'm not sure what they believe. Not that I care, that is..

Of course it doesn't, OPF.
But because God has placed a veil over their eyes, they simply cannot understand the Quran. It's as if they have been cursed or something.
The word "yamassu" appears in many places in the Quran, and not once does it mean "touch".
You can check for yourself. Open the Index of Quranic Words, and look up the word "yamassu/tamassu" and all its derivatives. You will find it means "to penetrate/ enter/affect deeply".
Like when we say about a madman "yamassuhu al-shaytan". It means that he has been ''possessed" or, a "devil" has "entered" him, so to speak.
Or, "yamassuhu al-azhab" , means he has been heavily afflicted by it.
Or, if you divorce the women before "tamassuhunna", meaning.. to have sexual intercourse, and not merely "touch"..Furthermore, at the time of the revelation of this verse, I doubt there were printed "mushafs" (Quran printed into books) as there is today.
But because the sectarians are obsessed with idolizing and "holyfying" material things (black stone, mosque, Imam's dome in Iraq, Prophet's shoe, etc...) they easily fall into this trap, and "holyfy" the paper on which the Quranic text is printed, and claim that you must be clean before touching it. (While making ZERO effort to actually understand the MEANING of the Quran).
Here is my humble interpretation of the verse 5679
None can grasp its meaning except those who are purified
Meaning If you want to truly have a deep understanding of the Quran, (penetrate into it - so to speak ) you must purify your mind and soul from the filth of idolatry and shirk, and resort to no one but God alone, and approach it with honest and pure intentions.
But if you keep resorting to Abu Huraira, or the "holy bearded ones" to explain it to you, you will not grasp its meaning.
Verse 5679 is stating a FACT, not giving a law.

However, when one performs the regular/timed salat/bond, which requires ablution, you will be utilising 'al quran' (reading and perhaps handling) thus one could use this to also argue FOR this.
Interestingly, this may even be where it originally stemmed from and not from 5677-79.

But that applies to the salat only, that's the thing. Either way, cleanliness is good. Buddhist phrase "The best starting point for improvement is perfection". If you get the gist of it...
