i'm writing an article about messengers/prophets and i have a question

Those who have attained to faith, and who have not obscured their faith by wrongdoing ? it is they who shall be secure, since it is they who have found the right path!?

And this was Our argument which We vouchsafed unto Abraham against his people We do raise by degrees whom We will. Verily, thy Sustainer is wise, all-knowing.

    And We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob; and We guided each of them as We had guided Noah aforetime. And out of his offspring, David, and Solomon, and Job, and Joseph, and Moses, and Aaron for thus do We reward the doers of good;

    and Zachariah, and John, and Jesus, and Elijah every one of them was of the righteous;

    and Ishmael, and Elisha, and Jonah, and Lot. And every one of them did We favour above other people;

and some of their forefathers and their offspring and their brethren We elected them , and guided them onto a straight way.

Such is God?s guidance He guides therewith whomever He wills of His servants. And had they ascribed divinity to aught beside Him ? in vain, indeed, would have been all that they ever did

it was to them that We vouchsafed revelation, and sound judgment, and prophethood. And now, although the unbelievers may choose to deny these truths, We have entrusted them to people who will never refuse to acknowledge them

to those whom God has guided. Follow, then, their guidance, say ?No reward do I ask of you for this behold, it is but an admonition unto all mankind!?

    682-90

    we have 18 names given

    1. Nuh (Noah)
    2. Ibrahim (Abraham)
    3. Isma?il (Ishmael)
    4. Ishaq (Isaac)
    5. Lut (Lot)
    6. Ya?qub (Jacob)
    7. Yousef (Joseph)
    8. Ayyub (Job)
    9. Musa (Moses)
    10. Harun (Aaron)
    11. Dawud (David)
    12. Sulaiman (Solomon)
    13. Ilias (Elias)
    14. Al-Yasa (Elisha)
    15. Yunus (Jonah)
    16. Zakariyya (Zechariah)
    17. Yahya (John)
    18. ?Isa (Jesus)

does 689 confirms that they are all prophets ?

or some of them could be only messengers ?

We have sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and We sent down with them the Book and the balance, so that the people may uphold justice. And We sent down the iron, wherein there is great strength, and many benefits for the people. So that God would distinguish those who would support Him and His messengers on faith. God is Powerful, Noble.575

    thank you

      Salaam Stefan

My own understanding of the word (alkitaab) is that it means (set of laws) or the book of laws (different from kitaab, without indefinite article). They all had divine laws to teach to people.

some of the names mentioned in the quran are defined as prophets exclusively .
          e.g
          Idris (Enoch)

And mention in the Book (the Qur?an) Idris (Enoch).Verily! He was a man of truth, (and) a Prophet.1956

          Ibrahim (Abraham)

And mention in the Book (the Qur?an) Ibrahim (Abraham). Verily! He was a man of truth, a Prophet.1941

          Ishaq (Isaac) and Yaqub (jacob)

So when he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Ishaque (Isaac) and Ya?qub (Jacob), and each one of them We made a Prophet.1949

          Harun (Aaron)

And We bestowed on him his brother Harun (Aaron), (also) a Prophet, out of Our Mercy.1953

          Yahya (John)

Then the angels called to him as he stood praying in the sanctuary That Allah gives you the good news of Yahya verifying a Word from Allah, and honorable and chaste and a prophet from among the good ones.339

some are defined as messengers prophets exclusively .
          e.g

          Musa (Moses)

And mention in the Book (this Qur?an) Musa (Moses). Verily! He was chosen and he was a Messenger (and) a Prophet.1951

          Isma?il (Ishmael)

And mention in the Book (the Qur?an) Isma?il (Ishmael). Verily! He was true to what he promised, and he was a Messenger, (and) a Prophet.1954

          and sometimes as

          Mohammed,Noah,Abaham,Moses and Jesus

And (remember) when We took from the Prophets their covenant, and from you (O Muhammad SAW), and from Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), and ?Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). We took from them a strong covenant.337

          My question is

Are all the 18 names given in 682-90 prophets ?

since i cant find any other mentioning concerning
          Job
          Zachariah
          Solomon
          Elisha

          as prophets nor messengers

          thank you

            I think you are right

The book is given to be used as a balance (&#1614 to ( &#1587 so that it might judge between people.

all the LAWS that are found throughout the Book (Divorce, Inheritance, Punishments, Charity, Rituals, etc..).

The people of Abraham were given a share of the Book (451) (454)

            Moses was given the book fully (6154) and (253) (287) (11110) (172) (2349) (2535) (2843) (3223) (4145) and thus to the sons of israel (4516)

Jesus was given and taught the book at a young age (1930) (5110)

            and finally Mohammed.

                  Peace to all,

Shouldnt we add Prophet Mohammad to the list of 18 prophets, if so then it would be 19 right, maybe this is the 19 the Quran talks about that will protect it in the verse that says "over it are 19"

                  Just a thought.

no , its not a nineteen thing because other prophets such as enoch is out of the 18 and he is a prophet .

but if not all of the 18 in the verses above
and we excluded from the 25
                      Adam
                      Job
                      Zachariah
                      Solomon
                      Elisha
                      Ezekiel

                      we will have 19 left

                        Dear stefan

18 prophets as you mentioned, and prophet Idris in 19-56, and if we add Mohammad to this list (33-40), it makes 20 . No body else has been adressed as a prophet any where in quran.

However we are told that the two prophets Moses and Aaron received the same Scripture. The Statute book was given to both Moses and Aaron (37117 and 214, therefore the total number of Scripture given to the 20 prophets is 19. This means that the Quran, besides being the last Scripture, is also the 19th Scripture delivered through the 20 prophets mentioned in the Quran.

(21-48 We gave Moses and Aaron the Statute Book, a beacon, and a reminder for the righteous. 37-117 We gave both of them the profound scripture)

                        siki

At the end of the list comprising 18 prophets, is the verse which says

6-89 "These are the ones to whom we have given the Scripture wisdom and prophethood",,

That means all the prophets have been mentioned in Quran by name, where as about messengers God precisely says,

4078 "We have sent messengers before you, some of them we mentioned to you, and some We did not mention to you." (also 4164)

Messengers are much more than the prophets and all are not listed in Quran , where as God does not make the above statement regarding prophets.

Maybe this is the true meaning of the verse and not a coincidence. If proven true, it will uproot the whole code 19 theory.

                                1- Idris (Enoch)

And mention in the Book (the Qur?an) Idris (Enoch).Verily! He was a man of truth, (and) a Prophet.1956

And certainly We sent Nuh and Ibrahim and We gave to their offspring the (gift of) prophecy and the Book; so there are among them those who go aright, and most of them are transgressors.5726

                                3- Hud (Eber)

When their brother Hud said to them ?Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

?Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.26124-125

                                4- Saleh (Shaloh)

When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them ?Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

                                ?I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.26142-143

                                5- Ibrahim (Abraham)

And certainly We sent Nuh and Ibrahim and We gave to their offspring the (gift of) prophecy and the Book; so there are among them those who go aright, and most of them are transgressors.5726

                                6- Isma?il (Ishmael)

And mention in the Book (the Qur?an) Isma?il (Ishmael). Verily! He was true to what he promised, and he was a Messenger, (and) a Prophet.1954

                                7- Ishaq (Isaac)

So when he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Ishaque (Isaac) and Ya?qub (Jacob), and each one of them We made a Prophet.1949

                                8- Lut (Lot)

When their brother Lout (Lot) said to them ?Will you not fear Allah and obey Him?

?Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.26161-162

                                9- Ya?qub (Jacob)

So when he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Ishaque (Isaac) and Ya?qub (Jacob), and each one of them We made a Prophet.1949

                                10- Yousef (Joseph)

And indeed Yusuf (Joseph) did come to you, in times gone by, with clear signs, but you ceased not to doubt in that which he did bring to you, till when he died you said ?No Messenger will Allah send after him.? Thus Allah leaves astray him who is a Musrif (a polytheist, oppressor, a criminal, sinner who commit great sins) and a Murtab (one who doubts Allah?s Warning and His Oneness).4034

And the king said ?Bring him to me.? But when the messenger came to him, said ?Return to your lord and ask him, ?What happened to the women who cut their hands? Surely, my Lord (Allah) is Well-Aware of their plot.??

(The King) said (to the women) ?What was your affair when you did seek to seduce Yusuf (Joseph)?? The women said ?Allah forbid! No evil know we against him!? The wife of Al-?Aziz said ?Now the truth is manifest (to all), it was I who sought to seduce him, and he is surely of the truthful.? 1250-51

                                11- Shu?aib (Jethro)

When Shu?aib (Shuaib) said to them ?Will you not fear Allah (and obey Him)?

                                ?I am a trustworthy Messenger to you.26177-178

                                12- Musa (Moses)

And mention in the Book (this Qur?an) Musa (Moses). Verily! He was chosen and he was a Messenger (and) a Prophet.1951

                                13- Harun (Aaron)

And We bestowed on him his brother Harun (Aaron), (also) a Prophet, out of Our Mercy.1953

                                14- Dawud (David)

And thy Lord knows very well whoso is in the heavens and the earth; and We have exalted some Prophets over others, and We gave to David Psalms.1755

                                15- Ilias (Elias)

And verily, Iliyas (Elias) was one of the Messengers.37123

                                16- Yunus (Jonah)

And Yunus was most surely of the messengers.37139

                                17- Yahya (John)

Then the angels called to him as he stood praying in the sanctuary That Allah gives you the good news of Yahya verifying a Word from Allah, and honorable and chaste and a prophet from among the good ones.339

                                18- ?Isa (Jesus)

The Messiah, son of Marium is but a messenger; messengers before him have indeed passed away; and his mother was a truthful woman; they both used to eat food. See how We make the communications clear to them, then behold, how they are turned away.575

                                19- Muhammad

Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Last of the prophets; and Allah is cognizant of all things.3340

                                My question is

                                Are all the 18 names given in 682-90 prophets ? ( &#1614

since i cant find any other mentioning concerning

A prophet is also a messenger , but every messenger is not a prophet, the prophets are a subset of messengers.

                                    Peace to all,

so were back to the number 19 again, is this just a coincidence?

                                    Kurt

i think it is just a coincidence.

because we cannot count them as 19 (messengers and prophets) since we are told that
some of them (messengers) We have mentioned to thee, and some of them We have not mentioned to thee,4078

                                        Are you sure ?

Do you have a proof ?

How can prove that any of the following -

                                        1. Idris (Enoch)
                                        2. Ishaq (Isaac)
                                        3. Ya?qub (Jacob)
                                        4. Harun (Aaron)

                                        6. Yahya (John)

                                        is a messenger ?

I think he meant 19 books not messengers/prophets. That's what I understood anyway.

according to my search study for the word "al-kitab" http//www.openburhan.com/pages/obdc2a.html

I think its just one book , but it was built up starting from Abraham (451) (454) such as salat , zakat and fasting "maktobat"
and moses was given the book fully (6154)
Jesus was given and taught the book at a young age (1930) (5110)
and finally Mohammed was given the true "kitab" free from all the adding "yaktobon" in 279

                                          what do you think ?

please explain what is meant by 19 books

                                          thank you
