Effects of Group Practice of the Transcendental Meditation Program on Preventing Violent Crime in Washington, DC Results of the National Demonstration Project, June-July 1993
This study presents the final results of a two-month prospective experiment to reduce violent crime in Washington, DC. On the basis of previous research it was hypothesized that the level of violent crime in the District of Columbia would drop significantly with the creation of a large group of participants in the Transcendental Meditation? and TM-Sidhi? programs to increase coherence and reduce stress in the District.
This National Demonstration Project to Reduce Violent Crime and Improve Governmental Effectiveness brought approximately 4,000 participants in the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs to the United States national capital from June 7 to July 30, 1993. A 27-member independent Project Review Board consisting of sociologists and criminologists from leading universities, representatives from the police department and government of the District of Columbia, and civic leaders approved in advance the research protocol for the project and monitored its progress.
The dependent variable in the research was weekly violent crime, as measured by the Uniform Crime Report program of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; violent crimes include homicide, rape, aggravated assault, and robbery. This data was obtained from the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department for 1993 as well as for the preceding five years (1988-1992). Additional data used for control purposes included weather variables (temperature, precipitation, humidity), daylight hours, changes in police and community anti-crime activities, prior crime trends in the District of Columbia, and concurrent crime trends in neighboring cities. Average weekly temperature was significantly correlated with homicides, rapes and assaults (HRA crimes), as has also been found in previous research; therefore temperature was used as a control variable in the main analysis of HRA crimes. Using time series analysis, violent crimes were analyzed separately in terms of HRA crimes (crimes against the person) and robbery (monetary crimes), as well as together.

Analysis of 1993 data, controlling for temperature, revealed that there was a highly significant decrease in HRA crimes associated with increases in the size of the group during the Demonstration Project. The maximum decrease was 23.3% when the size of the group was largest during the final week of the project. The statistical probability that this result could reflect chance variation in crime levels was less than 2 in 1 billion (p < .000000002). When a longer baseline is used (1988-1993 data), the maximum decrease was 24.6% during this period (p < .00003). When analyzed as a separate variable, robberies did not decrease significantly, but a joint analysis of both HRA crimes and robberies indicated that violent crimes as a whole decreased significantly to a maximum amount of 15.6% during the final week of the project (p = .000. Analysis of 1993 data, controlling for temperature, revealed that there was a highly significant decrease in HRA crimes associated with increases in the size of the group during the Demonstration Project.
Several additional analyses were performed on HRA crimes to further assess the strength of the main findings. These indicated that the reduction of HRA crimes associated with the group of participants in the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs could not be attributed to changes in police staffing. These secondary analyses also found that the reduction of HRA crimes was highly robust to alternative specifications of the statistical model-that is, the effect is independent of the isolated details of the models used to assess seasonal cycles and trends. No significant decrease was found in any of the prior five years during this period of time, indicating that this effect was not due to the specific time of year. Furthermore, the intervention parameters for the group size revealed that the effect of the group was not only cumulative with the increase in group size, but also continued for some time after the end of the project.
Based on the results of the study, the steady state gain (long-term effect) associated with a permanent group of 4,000 participants in the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs was calculated as a 48% reduction in HRA crimes in the District of Columbia.
Given the strength of these results, their consistency with the positive results of previous research, the grave human and financial costs of violent crime, and the lack of other effective and scientific methods to reduce crime, policy makers are urged to apply this approach on a large scale for the benefit of society.

How about saying a prayer to reduce the crime rates in the whole wide world... Do you think that would make a difference? If the above study shows that the crime rates did decrease would you then take time to say a little prayer for worldpeace? We seem to only pray for ourselves, why shouldn't we think about the whole wide world instead of being a little egotistic and pray only for ourselves (and/or loved ones)?
I wish and pray to God/Allah to reduce the crime rates. I wish and pray for justice.
Say your prayer and let's see if it will reduce the crime rates. group

peace sis,
I've heard claims that TM can reduce crimes in a couple of books I've read.
The TM explanation for this is that we are connected as one energy, if that energy is negative then negativity spreads throughout the community and if it is positive then the opposite will happen.
But is still doesn't make much sense to me, it kinda reminds of "the secret". where they claim that the thoughts you have are so powerful they effect your life and the planet in dramatic ways, it made weird claims that fleeting negative thoughts (the random nonsense that sometimes comes in and out of your head) is powerful enough to create terminal illness, poverty and even widespread disasters.
As for TM reducing crime my sis said that it's probably down to the fact that in places where people practice TM they are bound to be more philosophical and place more emphasis on ethical values.
However there are studies which show that when only 1% of the population practice TM crime rates are significantly reduced.
I don't usually meditate, I don't have the patience for it, i usually get bored after 30 seconds.
However there are sooo many articles that talk about the health benefits from TM, apparently it can even slow down the aging process.

When wrongdoings get out-of-control and crimes increase, the religionists start exaggerating and overzealously demand fictional exercises. Prayers, wishes and miracles are only emotional temporary soothers and selfishly motivated. Religionists and especially Muslims at large are the worst to influx God and their holy books into the equations to every cause, as if they have no minds, eyes and ears of their own. The crimes throughout the world are evidently environmental, circumstantial and unstoppable yet can be minimized. One must be committed, responsible and diligent via knowledge, education, talent and experience to bring about a change and pass on to the gentiles and the illiterates. Meditation reflects spiritual introspection to transcend. It takes two to play the game without an ?alien?.Peace!

peace sis,
Peace to you too Angel,
I've heard claims that TM can reduce crimes in a couple of books I've read.
Not only TM, even simple positive thoughts, prayers, etc.
The TM explanation for this is that we are connected as one energy, if that energy is negative then negativity spreads throughout the community and if it is positive then the opposite will happen.
See! That's what I mean with thoughts influencing our whole environment, referring to the whole wide world, since that energyfield encompasses everything and everyone.
Yup, it's like absorbing information about someone by thoughts in your head, but don't know if that information is true, till that person verifies it for you. We all see that as a "coincidence" (which I don't believe in), but it's information that we absorb from that energyfield.
Or another example saying to a person that you aren't mad and that person not believing you, although he/she can't see from the outside that you're mad, not seeing a sign. He/she just seems to feel the negative vibe coming from you, making him/her a little nervous, but do they know for sure that you're mad? Not until you admit that you are. Every thought has it's effect! Be it a positive or negative one.I don't usually meditate, I don't have the patience for it, i usually get bored after 30 seconds.
You don't have to "meditate" like how it's been taught. Just saying a sincere prayer out loud or in your head seems to be more than enough. Even writing it down can have a big or small effect on the world.
Just read some info about the discoveries of Masaru Emoto
From Mr. Emoto's work we are provided with factual evidence, that human vibrational energy, thoughts, words, ideas and music, affect the molecular structure of water, the very same water that comprises over seventy percent of a mature human body and covers the same amount of our planet. Water is the very source of all life on this planet, the quality and integrity are vitally important to all forms of life. The body is very much like a sponge and is composed of trillions of chambers called cells that hold liquid. The quality of our life is directly connected to the quality of our water.
...After seeing water react to different environmental conditions, pollution and music, Mr. Emoto and colleagues decided to see how thoughts and words affected the formation of untreated, distilled, water crystals, using words typed onto paper by a word processor and taped on glass bottles overnight. The same procedure was performed using the names of deceased persons. The waters were then frozen and photographed. Some examples

I thought I did in few weighted sentences. Here<"The crimes throughout the world are evidently environmental, circumstantial and unstoppable yet can be minimized. The other top half of my previous post was geared towards prayers, wishes and miracles, not TM. Besides, all of this is temporary and defines ones' boundaries. Life has become busier and stressful in many ways and it has become a tug of war from the miser and godly corporate/government levels and the richly royals down to the handicaps, the desperate and the poverty stricken. The root cause I believe is the imbalances of powers in just about every arena where making and breaking of rules are administered as deemed fit.
And check this out taken from Latifah's previous post

Peace Genteel,
It's indeed very funny... not! What seems so funny? Don't you believe in the science of Quantum Physics? The proof of an energyfield encompassing our outer- and innerworld???

art Nazi's thought to be "Degenerate Art"Peace Mehdi,
A painting isn't the same thing as the science of Emoto. When you paint you think of what colors you would like to use, how the painting should look like, etc. In the case of Emoto, he didn't 'think', he just acted and waited for the results to show.

whats so deceiving about the art Angel,
i never said it was deceiving....
Hitlers art is way better than most junk we see today, do you honestly like the other picture better than Hitlers piece? It isnt art that can be deceiving its truth.

i've always wondered why great artists tend to have serious psychological problems

Latifah,Emoto's works are neither scientific nor has anything to do with Quantum Physics? At best, they are superstitions or total nonsense. Emoto is not a scientist and makes biased and extraordinarily silly claims (similar to code-19). Please do some research before you start believing blindly in such idiocies and then approach others for not believing in Quantum Physics. ??? It is very funny indeed and just proves how people get carried away.

The crimes throughout the world are evidently environmental, circumstantial and unstoppable yet can be minimized
Genteel that is not a satisfactory answer.
you still have not explained why you believe the correlation between people practicing TM and lower crime rates do not coincide.

It actually has nothing to do with quantum physics. Please don't fall for this new age nonsense. Remember what the Quran says on magic.

First of all, Hitler was not a great artist. Seriously. Just look at his painting!
And art doesn't deceive, if you study what Hitler drew, you can take some accurate guesses at his personality.
That Mr. Emoto thing looks like crap, though. How did the water know what "adolf hitler" is?
I'll have to see it to believe it.About meditation, positive thoughts, prayers, etc...I think they can have a positive effect on a community, but it all starts from individuals.
We have to develop positive energy within ourselves, and then spread it through our words and actions (the only ways we can interact with others).
The thoughts have to be strong enough to translate into words and actions. We have to cultivate positivity within ourselves before we see it happen around us. -
Angel, you seem to be bent upon statistics. Do you blindly believe in any statistics presented by just anyone? Have you done a research on the statistics itself and asked questions such as
- What were the ages of the people in the group?
- How many men and women were involved?
- Were all people in that group criminals and to what extent?
- Where did they get these people from?
- How many people were actually experimented upon?
- What scientific methods of TM were used?
- How did the analysis prove that everyone were actually in TM mode?
- Did they study the same people on a consistent basis and for how long and how many times?
- How many of those tested (perhaps all criminals) do actually practise TM on a regular basis, given the time and mode of their lives (2 months is not enough for a bloated 4,000 people from a given area and considering other points herein)?
- Has any of the "criminals" gone back to their hell holes after testing them?
- Are all automatically adapted to TM mode regardless of IQ levels and initial conditiong?
- How certain is the analysis that testing TM on a temporary and short basis must reveal positive results throughout ones lifetime regardless of environmental and circumstantial surroundings?
- Has any comparative studies done on others elsewhere?
- Who are the people involved in these tests and what backgrounds/licenses/education/experiences do they themselves possess?
.....................etc., etc. Where are the real FACTS?
