    Assalamu Alaykum,

I know that some here do not do the "traditional" Salat, but for those that do I was wondering if anyone here had a Sajada? Also, does anyone have ayat on their walls?

I personally think that having ayat on the walls can be beneficial as it reminds them of God. The Sajada could set the mood, like wudu IMO. Not saying that the Sajada is required, but just that it helps focus the mind perhaps.

      Peace to all,

Amusli, I dont want to sound stupid but whats a sajada, is it a prayer rug? To answer your question, I do pray salat and do it almost the same as traditionists, except saying the MUhammad is the messenger of God part,, and I do use a rug but its not what you would call an Islamic prayer rug though, its actually a Native American rug, it has a very pretty pattern and it was given to me by a Tribal elder at a traditional give away ceremony, so i decided to use it to pray on. I liked the idea so much I went out and bought a few more and then went around in my community and gave out money(usually 40$) and a rug with it. You should see the looks of confusion and then big smile I get each time.

Sajada is what they call prayer rug, also known as prostration in the Salat. Heres the root word for it from the Lexicon

Siin-Jiim-Dal = lowly, humble, submissive, worship, adore, prostrate, make obeisance, lower/bend oneself down towards the ground, lower the head, to salute/honour/magnify, to pay respect, to stand up, to look continuedly and tranquily.
MSJD - parts of a man that are the places of SJD, e.g. forehead/nose/hands/knees/feet etc. Any mode/place/practice in which the act of SJD is done.

Sounds like your rug is specifically for your prayers, or is it for other purposes? Also, off topic, but why do you give the rug + $40? Sounds like a nice gesture though.

        Peace

          Salam

I use islamic prayer rug, I also have islamic books for study and an extra quran on a special shelf where it lays open, and quranic ayat on wall that says, "praise be to god" in arabic. This is all in a little nook to the side of my bed, I always feel safe and at peace in my room, because I have this special place.although to be honest I have been very lax in my sujood prayers, and mainly have been praying from my bed, in morning and night. I miss my prostrations though.

            Salam IronSky,

I think your idea of incorporating a part of indian culture, and their beautiful artwork into your daily life, with their rug, is wonderful! What tribe do you descend from? By the way, I wanted to commend you on you raw, real, and honest depiction of Americas history and how it affected the Indians, I never forget that, and see it the same way as you. It does not make me patriotic. I appreciate things here, but I'm no patriot. I've been reading a lot of your comments lately and you have said some great things, just wanted you to know! I can't always reply to every post I read, but I'm there absorbing and reading all I can!

Big pat on the back for your wonderful acts of charity!!) keep walking in guidance of the lord, may he shower you with mercy and blessings!

I want to have a room where its dedicated completely to God, more like an empty space just for that purpose. Have a sink and stuff for wudu and all of that. Your place sounds neat.

Isnt an "open Quran" something that Sunnis are against? I remember long time in school where they had a Quran open in the hall of our school for International Culture and MSA I believe (or some Muslims) told them that they dont like it so they closed it. I asked a friend why and he told me because they "dont want the devil to read it". I told them the devil has probably memorized it already, whats the point?

I also like ironsky's setup. Some Native American tribes believe in The Great Spirit, and from what Ive heard, I guess it equates somehow to our God. I dont want to say that it does since I dont know, like how Akhenatan worshiped one god but it was the sun.

                Peace!

I use prayer rugs due to 1) their softness, 2) that they help to put you in a special mood for the prayer time segment. I don't always use it, but often I do.

We have some ayats as wall hangings, mostly because they are neutral but still remind you about good things. I do however not see written ayats as holy items. The real thing is in our mind and hearts, not in dye molecules and calligraphic shapes.
