Animals being hunted/maimed/caged for sport

This is the topic that gets me riled up the most. Seriously, anything to do with animals literally kills me and is literally at the top of my list of the most distasteful things in the world/humans. Perhaps not all of you share my passion, but since we are Muslims we all know that the animals are Gods creatures as well and should be treated with respect, be it pets or to be slaughtered for food in the future.
To my question. As a muslim, do you believe that we should stand up against the injustices against animals? Like the seal huntings in Canada where they club baby seals just born and mothers. What if people went and killed the people doing this? Of course, first warning them and giving them truth to repent but they continue to do it. Also those fur farms where they skin the animals alive. Would it be Islamic? Whats the difference from protecting oneself to protecting other submitters to the almighty? I know that governments would probably throw those types of people in jail and give them death penalty, but again the governments do not run on Islam.
Just wanted to know what you all thought. I know that a lot of pro animal people go to jail for arson and stuff like that.
We are the guardians of this earth and its creatures yet we don't fulfill our duties.
