      I think because only the mother can claim 100% parentship of the child. A father can't. If you are presented by your father's name, there is some doubt that he really is not the father, even if he believed otherwise.

      It's not just in magic, but also
      Traditionalists believe that in JD people will be called by their mothers' names, not their fathers'.

      Jews define a jew as someone "whose mother is a jew".

      It is a "foul proof" way to confirm your id

              Thats good information, thanks Samia. Ive always believed that if my wife wanted to keep her surname, I wouldnt mind.

                In Spain and Portugal and countries of Iberoamerica peopla have the mother's and father's name and in some countries of Iberoamerica women take the husband name only after their first family name. Neither in Portugal nor Spain nor many other Iberoamerican countries women never change their family. It is usually a shock to learn that people do that kind of thing in so many countries. It is mindboggling and unexplainable.

                  If you apply for a credit card they ask your mother's name too If you call any bank for verification of the enquirer mother's name is also needed ;D
