What does the following verse mean? Does it mean that there is a greater purpose to the creation of the universe than to test mankind? I fail to grasp its meaning. "greater" in what sense?

    Thanks in advance.

Lakhalqu alssamawati waal-ardi akbaru min khalqi alnnasi walakinna akthara alnnasi la yaAAlamoona
YUSUFALI Assuredly the creation of the heavens and the earth is a greater (matter) than the creation of men Yet most men understand not.
PICKTHAL Assuredly the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind; but most of mankind know not.
SHAKIR Certainly the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of the men, but most people do not know
KHALIFA The creation of the heavens and the earth is even more awesome than the creation of the human being, but most people do not know.

      Peace explorer,

Maybe its just straightforward, that the creation of the entire universe is greater than that of man? I dont see anything wrong with it, and why would there be? We are just specks of dust. Before us there were other things on the earth, we're just a tiny minuscule of the entire picture. Also, the Quran also says that everything was created for a specific purpose.

Do you not realize that GOD has created the heavens and the earth for a specific purpose? If He wills, He can remove you, and substitute a new creation in your place.

We did not create the heavens and the earth, and everything between them just for amusement.
If we needed amusement, we could have initiated it without any of this, if that is what we wanted to do.
Instead, it is our plan to support the truth against falsehood, in order to defeat it. Woe to you for the utterances you utter.
To Him belongs everyone in the heavens and the earth, and those at Him are never too arrogant to worship Him, nor do they ever waver.
They glorify night and day, without ever tiring.

Now the part that I dont understand is 2118, unless that is in reference from God to the Angels regarding Ibliz and other things. Why would God need to destroy falsehood?

      Peace

We are a result of the creation of the Universe with all its Laws and processes, thus the Universe is a greater design then that of man as we are only a particle within that design.

Thanks amuslim and Arnold Yasin. Your comments were helpful.

amuslim, you have a point regarding 2118. Satan is out there to do his job. Quran has already told has that the hell will be full of people falling in Satan's trap. Why would God need to support the truth against falsehood.

Why would God need to support the truth against falsehood.

              Greetings,

My understanding is that God has put all of creation out there for us to see and understand how it works as a verification of what He has told us in the Qur'an. He hasn't just sent the Qur'an for us to see and understand, but the Truth is always all around us in all of the workings of creation.

                Peace to all,

Satan is out there to do his job. Quran has already told has that the hell will be full of people falling in Satan's trap. Why would God need to support the truth against falsehood.

Satan's claim was that ' i am better than the human' Thus we're given the chance to prove him right or wrong.

712 He said "What has prevented you from yielding when I have ordered you?" He said "I am far better than him, You created me from fire and created him from clay!"
713 He said "Descend from it, it is not for you to be arrogant here; depart, for you are disgraced."
714 He said "Grant me respite until the Day they are resurrected?"
715 He said "You are granted."
716 He said "For that which You have caused me to be misled, I will stalk for them on Your Straight Path."
717 "Then I will come to them from between their hands, and from behind them, and from their right, and from their left; You will find most of them are unappreciative."
718 He said "Get out from this, you are despised and banished. As for those of them who follow you, I will fill Hell with you all!

1422 And the devil said when the matter was complete "God Had promised you the promise of truth, and I promised you and broke my promise. And I had no power over you except that I invited you and you responded to me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves; I cannot help you nor can you help me. I reject that you have set me as a partner before this; the wicked will have a painful retribution." ( Even Satan claims to be a monotheist! Also see 848 for that)

He (Satan) said, "My Lord, since You have willed that I go astray, I will surely entice them on earth; I will send them all astray. Except those among Your worshipers who are devoted absolutely to You alone." He (God) said, "This is a law that is inviolable you have no power over my servants; you only have power over the strayers who follow you."
