    Peace all,

Wow you guys havent lost much. Ive lost about 13 KG, mainly because when Ramadan started it was the day that I got the flu, what a combination. Regarding Iftar and Suhoor, its sad that a lot of people do pig out. I think that Ramadan lasts the entire day, just that the fast breaks. Matter of fact, it should be a reflection for your entire life.

Ive read scientific studies that Ramadan is good for your body and shrinks the bladder or something like that? Also about toxins. Is there any unbiased studies that attest to this outside of Islamic sources?

    Peace

        Salam amuslim,

wow I concur with Samia! That much is kinda strange just by fasting? Is that kg for sure? You should get a checkup done bro.

While fasting, I just think it's a reversal of the times one normally eats, instead of the day it becomes the night etc. So my view is forces the body to be active at a time that it's normally passive. I'm not sure exactly what benefits this has, but sounds as if it might be good? The sleep cycle however gets disrupted that's for sure, and it's a bit annoying. I've searched for the benefits of fasting on google but all I've come up with are things called "juice fasting" and "water fasting" which are extreme. Other than Islamic sources, I haven't really come across any dealing with the particular way we do fasting.

          peace all,

Firstly, losing weight is not always a good thing.

With respect to fasting some eat, pray fajr, then go to bed. If so, as far as I'm aware going to sleep on a full stomach or after a meal is not good, especially if it coincides with your normal sleeping time when your metabolism is slower.

I would think, ideally, one should remain awake, do their morning duties, then have a nap in the afternoon. Who here doesn't love an afternoon nap?

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

Maybe those who get plenty of sleep in the night?

Ideally yes, but practically no. It's difficult for those working for example, to find the time for an afternoon nap. What I do after the first few days of feeling crabby ('cause of dependencies which fasting does away with to some degree) and no set pattern is eat the required amount for the day in the evening/night as usual in small amounts (not all at once), and go off to bed when it's the normal time. I'd probably get up drowsily and hopefully pick up a bottle of water (and not baby lotion) lying on the bedside table and drink a bit before the times up. If I get up and do stuff, there ain't no getting back to sleep, which is drastic in my eyes.

Speaking of afternoon naps, I read that the Spanish government is trying to weed out the Siesta from Spanish culture to make Spain more integrated into Europe (whatever that means). Disgusting. I think people should have mass sleep-ins in protest.

I've often napped at work. ;D To my employers, I call them "power naps" and tell them afterwards I will be more productive... works like a charm.

                    Peace all,

Thanks for the concerns guys. Im actually really healthy, but I have a fast metabolism. I generally weigh at about 290 lbs and if I take out one meal, I can lose a couple of pounds. I think that the reason why I lost so many pounds was that while I was fasting for the first 2 weeks, some days I didnt eat at all. In some cases that can actually cause weight gain, but I eat around 8 meals a day. I hardly eat junk food. I also lift weights. Ive just never had the flu when it was Ramadan.

I generally take Afternoon naps as well, Ive been doing that for awhile. Ive heard that it is actually good for you.

                    Peace

Btw, thought I'd add...if I go to sleep in the afternoon, I wake up with depression. For some reason, I don't know why but it's always with a sense of melancholy or loss of some sort that I wake up with which leads to me being depressed for at least an hour after. Purely because of this, I don't do the siesta's anymore. Anyone else with the same problem?

Well I eat, or at least try, every two hours. When I say meals, it can be snacks as well, such as apples. Its great for my digestion. I go to the bathroom at least 4 times a day, thats not including urine. I know of one guy who didnt go for like almost a week. Tons of fiber is great To tell you the truth, I dont really eat as much as you'd think.

                            Fasting benefits

Many of the worst diseases are linked to high weight/obesity (diabetes, heart disease, high cholestrol etc...)

It's a chance for your body to rejuvenate and 'take a break'

It's a great way to detoxify your body.

                            Here's a good, unbiased article

Modern science is slowly embracing the idea of fasting. Researchers are now showing the magnitude of biochemical events taking place in the blood, joints, fatty tissues and organs of the body during a time of fasting. Now, don't equate fasting with starving. It's not the same. What's happening is that the body is utilizing the fatty tissues, enzymes and muscle tissue to sustain itself during this brief period of time (its been said that a proper fast can be performed for up to 40 days before any type of starvation occurs...be sure that you consult a trained doctor for any type of lengthy fast). Also, the body is breaking down all the abnormal cells (tumorous), tissues and plaque that have built up and is eliminating it from the body. The resulting benefits from the fast are that the organs and glands get a rest, the tissues are purified and renewed, the pH of the blood is balanced, the joints begin to recover and the intestines get a good sweeping.

                              Salam,

D'argento, that article talks about juice fasting or somesuch? If it's possible can you find one about the way we do it, as in partial fasting with no juices or water etc?

Well I eat, or at least try, every two hours. When I say meals, it can be snacks as well, such as apples. Its great for my digestion. Oh ok, so snacks are counted as meals! I was a bit worried there D. Siesta means a nap in the afternoon but it's also taken to mean a break or something which could be construed as time to party? P

Amuslim dear Siesta is rest. Fiesta is party. You take a siesta after a fiesta.

I agreed to fast this Ramadan with my husband, since misery loves company. But I think he has gained weight. Not for bad eating habits (though eating only at night isn't typically healthy), but because I think he didn't eat well before we were maried.

The Iftars I make are healthy and wholesome, and include plenty of veggies because veggies have fiber which fills you up quickly and helps you feel full for a long time.

Suhoors involve fruit mostly. Again the fiber and sense of ufllness, and the sugar helps togive you energy during they day.

I haven't gained, but I haven't lost either. I had to slow down the exercise, from both a lack of time and energy during the times when I typically exercise.

What's killing me is the not drinking. As a Catholic, we're permitted to drink water during our fast. My job involves a LOT of talking, so handling my day without water is difficult. My personal Eid reward, I think, will be getting to have bottles of water during the day again.

                                    I don't think so...

                                    From the article

I think you are referring to the bottom of the article where it's the writer's plan for fasting. I.E. Just one way to do it...However fasting from sunrise to sunset is another...

I see, most of the articles I've read, never recommend leaving off water/juice etc in what they call fasting. I'll have a look through, thanks.

                                        Salaams all,

                                        Fasting benefits
Many of the worst diseases are linked to high weight/obesity (diabetes, heart disease, high cholestrol etc...)
It's a chance for your body to rejuvenate and 'take a break'
It's a great way to detoxify your body.
                                        Here's a good, unbiased article

Great article, thanks. As far as starving, would this be equated to the Christian version of fasting? For example, when my mom used to fast, she would do it straight without breaking it at all or drinking anything. Im not sure if this is what all Christians do, but I take it that most do due to what the Bible says about Jesus?

I never thought about the reason why we have no appetite when we are sick. That sounds interesting that theres a reason behind it, and thats actually to make us better.

                                        Salam,

D'argento, that article talks about juice fasting or somesuch? If it's possible can you find one about the way we do it, as in partial fasting with no juices or water etc?

Oh ok, so snacks are counted as meals! I was a bit worried there . Siesta means a nap in the afternoon but it's also taken to mean a break or something which could be construed as time to party?

From the way that I saw it, I dont think he broke his fast like Muslims do. He just fasted from food for 7 days, but still drank liquids. I think that that is fairly easy to do, since during Ramadan, liquids is the hardest thing for me to go without, like Keeley.

It has its own name just for that? Siestas must be really important to spanish culture. However I wonder why it doesnt fit in with "European Culture"? That doesnt make sense as theres different traditions in each European country. Unless what they meant was to be more westernized?

amuslim, you may have confused fiesta with siesta.

They both sound the same, hard for me to make the distinction

Keeley, you are a really great wife. When I get married, I hope my wife is just as understanding as you, God Willing, if she doesn't "identify" herself as a "Muslim", but is of the People of the Book.

I havent exercised since I started Ramadan, but the main reason is because I got the Flu on the day Ramadan started. The Water gets to me too, but right before sawm starts each day, I drink tons of water. Ramadan truely makes me appreciative of food. Praise be to God for such blessings that we take for granted.

                                        Was Salaam

I agree, I also find going without liquids is hard since I've usually lived all my life in hot climates. If I had Gatorade (in lemon) all day, fasting would be a breeze without food . Though I'd miss the fruit.

Many cultures have this nap in the afternoon thing down pat. I think what they meant, was trying to make it more "unified European" by doing away with unique cultures or something so they have this uniform thing across the board. Assimilation into the New Europe which apparently should be nothing like the old. I don't really think it'll go anywhere yet. peace
