Yes. There has been Quran based articles on what shirk is, however, one can easily do the research themselves, just takes a little time but brings about a more solid understanding in the end. Here are all occurrences of the root from The Quran

      From http//www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm

Shiin-Ra-Kaf = to be a companion, be sharer/partner. shirkun - share, participation, polytheism, idolatry, making associate/partner with Allah. shariik (pl. shurakaa) - associate, partner, sharer. Nouns of the second declension when followed by the affixed pronouns take the three inflexions thus shurakaa, shurakaa'i, shurakaa'a. shaarak (vb. 3) - to share with. ashraka (vb. 4) - to make a sharer or associate, give companions (e.g. to God), be a polytheist or idolater. ashraktumuuni - you associated me as partner. mushrik - one who gives associate to God, polytheist. mushtarikun (vb. 8 ) - one who partakes or shares.

      sharika vb. (1)
      n.vb. 3113, 3422, 3514, 3540, 464

      sharik n.m. (pl. shuraka) 412, 622, 694, 6100, 6136, 6136, 6136, 6137, 6139, 6163, 7190, 7195, 1028, 1028, 1034, 1035, 1066, 1071, 1316, 1333, 1627, 1686, 1686, 17111, 1852, 252, 2862, 2864, 2874, 3013, 3013, 3028, 3040, 3427, 3540, 3929, 4147, 4221, 6841, 6841

Shirk in the Koran is the belief in more than one God.

          Peace Zerda,

Don't base it on anyone's opinion(s), including mine ). I'd do what Bro Wakas recommends.

Another tool I find immensely helpful

          http//www.islamicity.com/QuranSearch/

Cross-referencing is the best way IMO to find out what quran says about shirk.

Also, at the bottom of this thread, I have 'attempted' to get all the information about shrik

i would just like to say... that when i first looked into Islam, i was stunned and put off by the traditional shahada. so for months i recited only "La ilaha ila Allah" and guiltily (but with relief) left out Mohammad. it seemed like exactly what it is, shirk. literally putting a partner next to God in one's declaration of faith.

for me, the traditional shahada itself is shirk, and the root of a lot of what is wrong with Islam today.

Peace, havin other gods beside God is shirk. Acceptin other sources than quran can be shirk, if those sources contradict or add other laws to quran. Whatever and whoever occupies yr mind like an obsession can be yr god. Falling in love and thinkin of the love one all the time is shirk.

I think this makes the dude forget about all the laws and limits put by God, and the dude will transgress this by not remenbering God.

If you value and think about something else more than God, it can be shirk. Such as the ego.

Quran 2543 Araayta mani ittakhatha ilahahu hawahu afaanta takoonu AAalayhi wakeelan
Quran 2543 Seest thou such a one as taketh for his god his own passion (or impulse)? Couldst thou be a disposer of affairs for him?

The same as for the person who considers hadith more than Qur?an and atheists will be the greatest losers.

274-5 Verily, those who believe not in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds fair-seeming to them, so that they wander about blindly. They are those for whom there will be an evil torment. And in the Hereafter they will be the greatest losers.

                                Peace Zerda,

I really like the reply that brother Wakas has given to you. As he already stated, it requires a little more work to do the research but the understanding of the concept will be more solid that way.

If you wish to read an article that sums it up and is strictly Quranic based then I'd recommend This Article

I for one pay particular attention to the last two examples given concerning divisionism (3031-32) and failing to establish Zakat/bring forth betterment (416-7).

                                Salaam,
                                Damon.

                                    Anyone care to tell me

                                    1. Where these numbers came from?

                                    2. How this relates to the article?

Anyway, I originally came here to say that this word (shirk) is heavily overused, and it seems the different sects of islam are shooting this at each other. Quite funny seeing how the only people who aren't associating others with God are the submitters (or Quran-only muslims).

What gets me though is this. You'll hear a hadithist state that any "sahih" hadith must be taken as long as it doesn't contradict the Quran.

What is his definition of "contradict" in this case, you and I wonder? Let's take a look.

You'll also hear from him that anything is halal (ok) as long as the Quran and/or the Hadith don't prohibit it. Gee, I guess just about everything is prohibited then, because when you're not allowed to listen to music, look at pictures, or imitate the disbelievers in any way shape or form or in their actions, just what the hell can you do besides acts of worship? nope

Regarding the above, if for instance I say that eating bananas is haram, he's going to say it contradicts the hadith and/or the Quran, because they don't prohibit it.

                                    ok...

By this person's logic then, anything that the hadith prohibits that the Quran doesn't, is in clear contradiction to the Quran.

Yet he says if I say something is haram and the hadith/Quran don't say it is, my words are in contradiction. Funny, isn't it?

                                      Peace,

When Abraham got sick, didn't he wait for God to heal him?

2680 "And when I am ill, it is He Who cures me''

Does this mean seeking medicine is shirk?? What a doctor will do God can't do? If not why bother praying to God??

                                      Peace,

And Abraham would say the same about being fed and clothed. Does that mean he expects God to spoon feed him?

Shirk, as I understand it is the believe in more than one God. Some people see it as elevating anything to a "god like" status. This is very vague and subjective and I believe its not what the Koran is talking about although this is a great sin as the Koran says

104.1-3 Woe to every (kind of) scandal-monger and-backbiter, Who pileth up wealth and layeth it by, Thinking that his wealth would make him last for ever!

However shirk in the Koran as I see it is

23.91. No son did Allah beget, nor is there any god along with Him (if there were many gods), behold, each god would have taken away what he had created, and some would have lorded it over others! Glory to Allah. (He is free) from the (sort of) things they attribute to Him!

Notice how some believe different gods created different things in the universe while others may believe one god creates the others runs it's affairs.

Some people also say "practicing shirk". I don't think you practice shirk, shirk is a belief system, you believe in shirk. You then worship the other gods as per your belief. Shirk is a theological belief. Its not something that is done simply by practicing. You can have a statue at your house but it means nothing. You can even bow to it and it still means nothing. Its when you worship it as a god then thats shirk. That only happens if you have shirk beliefs. The angels bowed to Adam and prostrated and Jospeh's brothers did the same to Joseph. But they did not belief Joseph was a god. Shirk as I see it is a aqeedah.
