Is religion greater than one's responsibilitry towards parents?

Today while browising through one of the sites, i came across the following question
"I am a 17-year old Muslimah, reverted to Islam one month back. My question to you may sound weird but my concern is genuine. I belong to a Hindu Brahmin family without any brothers. Since girls are allowed as well to perform the funeral rites of their parents in absence of any real brother, I wish to know if I shall be eligible to do so when the evil day shall beckon. My family does not know of my decision of reverting to Islam"
And the answer for this is
"Congratulations on your reversion to Islam. We cannot thank Allah sufficiently for this great bounty.
You will have to do your utmost to come up with some excuse for not attending. If need be play sick or find some excuse.

Religion IS one's responsibility towards their parents. The latter is part of the first, anyway.

Yes, Religion is one's responsibility towards parents.
Here, the so called Imam is asking the guy to play sick to escape his responsibilities. Isnt that something wrong?

I don't know what the rituals involve. If it involves doing something forbidden to a muslim, then I would skip that part or have somebody else, if possible the nearest relative act those parts or even the whole ceremony if the ritual is forbidden to muslims, and just be present and pray.

Religion is indeed the world most bloody and serious hobby that people engage in.
The answer of the imam to this girl is just silly. Why can't this girl just do the normal rituals and get it over with, at least to let everything go peaceful for all people attending etc... I mean, she doesn't believe in the rituals anyway, and she doesn't do them for herself... it's just a cultural thing to finish off the funeral... big deal. I mean, I keep seeing so many hypocrites in the religions, so I'm "sure" that the imam is no better than the girl anyway... let her just get it over with.... why does religion always have to instill doubt, fear and insecurity? Amazing.
