    peace

ok i've read some other threads about this topic, some say it's ok some say it's not, i'd like to make sure.

590 O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and sacraments, and fortunes are foul tools used by the devil. You shall avoid him so that you may be successful.
591 The devil only wants to cause strife between you through intoxicants and gambling, and to repel you away from remembering God and from the communion. Will you be deterred?

ok, it doesn't actually say 'it's prohibited' but it does say it's a tool used by the devil and we should avoid him.
now is it only the devil who uses intoxicants and gambling?
because in another verse 443 O you who believe, do not approach the communion while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying...
from that verse it is obvious that people who were doing the communion were getting intoxicated once in a while, and they were believers, so why would they do it if it's tools used by the devil?

but that's about intoxicants, i wanna know about lottery and bots are mentioned in same verse there about them being the tools used by devil, so if believers did one thing (intoxicants), could they do another thing (gambling/lottery)?
also, if it doesn't repel us away from remembering God, is it ok to do it then?

No. Intoxication is only a special case. God has said that khamr has both benefit and bad, but this has never been said for gambling.

        Brother OPF,

I think you might want to correct that. In fact, I am still awaiting your reponse to the following post

Sorry, brain fart. Disregard that. Both intoxication and gambling are part of the special case. What I guess threw me off here is that gambling is always denounced in the quran but intoxication is used with respect to non-law related things like salat as seen here. For instance, even Jonah is admonished heavily for it .

Think about it. For the UK lottery, 48 numbers ^ 6 = 12230590464. Your probability is 1/ that number, (8.1x10^-11). Doesn't look good. Especially, given that the probability of being hit by lightning in the US is 10 orders of magnitude more likely. On the other hand, the person raking in the cash profits much, while millions of people waste a few . If that's not "riba" I don't know what it is.

also, if it doesn't repel us away from remembering God, is it ok to do it then?

General case or just these? Good question.

            Brother OPF,

Firstly, I would advise you to refrain from name-calling as it doesn't suit a believer. As for the quoted verse, 37141, it just tells us that Jonah cast lots and simply lost. That's it. Whatever followed was a consequence of his loss from an activity the nature of which God has described in 2219. When you say Gambling is somehow worse than intoxicants in light of 37141, I say it is a matter of perspective. I'd say that something which prompts God to tell believers to refrain from Salat is even worse. But I don't accept that because of 2219. Gambling and intoxicants are in the same basket in 2219.

About the lottery, I'll say that the people who blame the lottery for the losses because of the probablities and rigging, as just plain wrong. When you know about 2219 and you know about 590 and 591, which tell you to avoid gambling and intoxicants, and rhetorically asks you, "will you not desist" from them, I just don't understand, why people don't take the admonishment from them and don't participate in lottery, rather than blaming the other person for "Al-Riba". This is a test for the believers. In the end, you will not be able to blame the other person for your weaknesses. In fact, I'm sorry but I'll refer you again to the following post for my understanding, which is solidifying day by day as I read some discussion in that regard on this forum

I?m actually going to a Reno convention this morning to spend week surrounded by shajtans!

Although some usefulness in learning gaming theory strategy/odds it becomes a mind game where people are fooled into believing they have a system or think they are lucky then hooked further trying to win it back. Interesting how they remember and talk about the few times they won or saw somebody else win and never mention losing.

590 ??so avoid it, maybe you succeed/win.?

I?ll try to keep the above verse in mind.

              peace

Actually the "name calling" is to himself, and it is not as ugly as it looks!!

                That's what I've learned today

In that case, Brother OPF, I apologize for my misunderstanding.

That was supposed to mean "slip of the brain", not "Oi, brain fart!" ;D

What about a game where you win prizes if you are right on all the questions? Free participation.

Then they randomly choose who wins first prizes, second prize...
