I came to Islam in a very roundabout way. I am now 50 years old, and like many of my generation have always been searching for truth, whether it be in drugs, music, philosophy or religion. In fact, I was always reluctant to embrace any of them fully , as I found nothing meaningful in them that would change my life to the extent I wanted it to be changed. At the age of twenty something , I became extremely interested in Buddhism , and I still am.
Buddhism taught me the right way to think and fell about my exsistence, and explained why I was so discontent with life.It taught me to view life and all it's experiences as a mere game , whwere eveything was a product of my ego and was therefore insubstantial.Years went by , and I found myself at the age of 46 , two children ,growing up fast , a job that is fulfilling , (working with homeless people) but still unsatisfied with life, the universe and everything. I love nature, especially birds, and one day in my lunch hour, I decided to visit the local secondhand book market, with the sole intent to look for a books about birds. I found a book of Sufi Poetry entitled " The Conference of The Birds " I took it home and read it .What a revalation !! This is pure Buddhism !! but it was written by a devout Muslim, one who is revered in the Muslim world. I read more books. Then I read the Quran. This is THE book. It contains eveything I need to know, and more. Read the Quran, and The Conference of The Birds. Study Buddhism, and above ALL read the Quran each and evey day.
