        Peace Gazzali,

You may wish to read my first book on Islam http//al-gazzali.blogspot.com/2007/01/book-title-gazzalis-jinn.html

        Any comments welcome, please.

Thank you. Very interesting book. I read part of it and I had an initial comment.

You mentioned that "jinn" are "living". However, all living things are made of water, while "jinn" are made of fire. So they are not "living". In fact, in chapter 72 we are told that the good "jinn" aspire to be given water in the after-life. So the good "jinn" would become "living" then. The reason "jinn" have hearts and die is that they are attached to us and share those with us (they are our "qarin&quot.

I had written the following article on this subject some time ago and I would also be interested in your comments

          Peace,

I do not believe Jinn is a title of one object or being. It is a description of an attribute "Something behind a barrier".

We can see this for example in that it was also used for a child in the womb and a body in the grave, for kings as they live in palaces out of sight of the common people.

Using this, I have made my own journey in understanding the word Jinn verse by verse

            Peace bro "Arnold",
I was wondering whether the word "insaan" could also refer to various entities and not be fixed since it comes from the root "nsh" meaning "to err/forget". So "insaan" are "erring/forgetful beings" which admittedly is one of the main properties of humans. GOD Bless!

              Peace,

The Quran always uses a system where words explain each other by being opposites.

-Insaan implies more to "Being related/family/Have a loving connection with one another".
-Nass means "Those that have halted". For the nomads this referred to the people who formed cities and towns.
-Jinn refers mostly to those that live outside your society or have high positions within the society as they are not seen by your people or do not normally dwell within the society. There are Jinn in the Quran that refers to dead people, myths, aliens and a couple of more, but these are outside the opposition-understanding.

So you get this triangle of meaning

Jinn (Foreign nations-People in high positions)
              /
              /
              /
Nass (All Large Societies)----------Insaan (Your Nation/Society/Tribe)

When God uses Jinns and Ins it means "The foreign nations and your nation".

When He uses Nass and Jinn, as in Surah 114, it means "All nations and their leaders".

                    7216...

                    P E A C E

Say It has been revealed to me that a company of Jinns listened (to the Qur'an). They said, 'We have really heard a wonderful Recital!
722 'It gives guidance to the Right, and we have believed therein we shall not join (in worship) any (gods) with our Lord.
723 'And Exalted is the Majesty of our Lord He has taken neither a wife nor a son.
                    724 'There were some foolish ones among us, who used to utter extravagant lies against God;
725 'But we do think that no man or spirit should say aught that untrue against God.
726 'True, there were persons among mankind who took shelter with persons among the Jinns, but they increased them in folly.
727 'And they (came to) think as ye thought, that God would not raise up any one (to Judgment).
728 'And we pried into the secrets of heaven; but we found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires.
729 'We used, indeed, to sit there in (hidden) stations, to (steal) a hearing; but any who listen now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush.
7210 'And we understand not whether ill is intended to those on earth, or whether their Lord (really) intends to guide them to right conduct.
7211 'There are among us some that are righteous, and some the contrary we follow divergent paths.
7212 'But we think that we can by no means frustrate God throughout the earth, nor can we frustrate Him by flight.
7213 'And as for us, since we have listened to the Guidance, we have accepted it and any who believes in his Lord has no fear, either of a short (account) or of any injustice.
7214 'Amongst us are some that submit their wills (to God), and some that swerve from justice. Now those who submit their wills - they have sought out (the path) of right conduct
7215 'But those who swerve,- they are (but) fuel for Hell-fire'-
7216 (And God's Message is) "If they (the Pagans) had (only) remained on the (right) Way, We should certainly have bestowed on them Rain in abundance.
7217 "That We might try them by that (means). But if any turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will cause him to undergo a severe Penalty.
                    7218 "And the places of worship are for God (alone) So invoke not any one along with God;
7219 "Yet when the Devotee of God stands forth to invoke Him, they just make round him a dense crowd."
7220 Say "I do no more than invoke my Lord, and I join not with Him any (false god)."
7221 Say "It is not in my power to cause you harm, or to bring you to right conduct."
7222 Say "No one can deliver me from God (If I were to disobey Him), nor should I find refuge except in Him,
7223 "Unless I proclaim what I receive from God and His Messages for any that disobey God and His Apostle,- for them is Hell they shall dwell therein for ever."
7224 At length, when they see (with their own eyes) that which they are promised,- then will they know who it is that is weakest in (his) helper and least important in point of numbers.
7225 Say "I know not whether the (Punishment) which ye are promised is near, or whether my Lord will appoint for it a distant term.
7226 "He (alone) knows the Unseen, nor does He make any one acquainted with His Mysteries,-
7227 "Except an apostle whom He has chosen and then He makes a band of watchers march before him and behind him,
7228 "That He may know that they have (truly) brought and delivered the Messages of their Lord and He surrounds (all the mysteries) that are with them, and takes account of every single thing."

Which of these sentences concerns your question?

Could the jinn be dead people who have earned jahanna and are therefore made of fire, and who in that orm can still seek God's approval?

No because Men and Jinn will be judged. Then sent to wherever. The way I understand it is judgement must happen before anyone is sent to there final destination.

But they may have been judged as men already, and as a result turned into jinn, and then be judged as jinn, and then... are there any ayas that say what happens to jinn after judgement?

Here are examples that Jinn are on the same journey of life as Man

I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me.
                                5156

Say (O Muhammad) It is revealed unto me that a company of the Jinn gave ear, and they said Lo! we have heard a marvellous Qur'an, Which guideth unto righteousness, so we believe in it and we ascribe no partner unto our Lord. And (we believe) that He - exalted be the glory of our Lord! - hath taken neither wife nor son, And that the foolish one among us used to speak concerning Allah an atrocious lie. And lo! we had supposed that humankind and jinn would not speak a lie concerning Allah - And indeed (O Muhammad) individuals of humankind used to invoke the protection of individuals of the jinn, so that they increased them in revolt against Allah); And indeed they supposed, even as ye suppose, that Allah would not raise anyone (from the dead) -And (the Jinn who had listened to the Qur'an said) We had sought the heaven but had found it filled with strong warders and meteors. And we used to sit on places (high) therein to listen. But he who listeneth now findeth a flame in wait for him; And we know not whether harm is boded unto all who are in the earth, or whether their Lord intendeth guidance for them. And among us there are righteous folk and among us there are far from that. We are sects having different rules. And we know that we cannot escape from Allah in the earth, nor can we escape by flight. And when we heard the guidance, we believed therein, and whoso believeth in his Lord, he feareth neither loss nor oppression. And there are among us some who have surrendered (to Allah) and there are among us some who are unjust. And whoso hath surrendered to Allah, such have taken the right path purposefully. And as for those who are unjust, they are firewood for hell.

The Sura "The Jinn" explains fully who they are. The Jinn are not fantasies or the desires of man. Jinn are separate beings created from Smokeless fire who will be judged as will mankind. The Jinn have the exact same social problems we do. They have sects in religion, they have unjust Jinn and they have Jinn who want to follow guidance. Only the unjust will burn in hell and the it for God to decide. The Jinn are not as esoteric as made claim, they are beings that can interact with us from maybe another dimension but we cannot with them. They can also serve man as they did with Solomon and they existed before Man Satan. We cannot speak to them but they can persuade us, and lead us astray Satan as peoples Patriach. But some Jinn are good and fear God. They are just beings like us that we have little knowledge about.

                                Peace

So, I do not see anything in there that makes it incompatible with the jinn being those who were human and became inmates of hell. Their new nature would be fire and not dust. To some of them fire would have brought the conscience of God and to some it would not.

This just occurred to me while reading this thread. Doesn't have to exclude other possibilities. As soemone in the thread has said, there is a variety of jinn-ness in the Quran. May be be it is some characteristic of things of a different nature that which is taken as a generic quality encompass them all and not a specific species.

                                  Salaam

Well I am using the Qur'an for my explanation. You are using guesswork. It may be you have some truth, but what you are claiming is not mentioned in the Qur'an... so it is only your opinion.

Plus God said he created Jinn from smokeless fire and Man from dust. God didn't say he made Jinn from the dust of man and the fires of hell.

                                        Salaam

Where are you getting this from exactly?

From what I say. We do not know what the jinn in the Quran are, we only know so much speculation, so I am just putting forward a possibility. Those who are condemned by their deeds on the qiyama will be the burn and still live on, so what are they. Are they still human?
