Yesterday I was reminded of a statement made in the Quran where God challenges man to produce a surah equal to any in the Quran - and then it is said that no one will be able to ever do this. I always wondered what was meant by this, since there have been so many great poets and philosophers.

Does anyone think that it may be to do with the healing vibrational sounds created from the recitation?

Had We sent this as a Qur'an (in the language) other than Arabic, they would have said "Why are not its verses explained in detail? (41/44)

Again I ponder over that why would I ask for greater detail if it had been set in English - the most accessible language presently? Is that becasue if it was set according to sound vibrations - then it might certainly have sounded jibberish?

"For those who believe, it is a guide and healing. As for those who disbelieve, they will be deaf and blind to it, as if they are being addressed from faraway." (4144)

        Guide and a healing?

It heals society. I do not believe the mere recitation can heal your body. The Quran can only help people when people follow it, not just recite it...

Well I think you are right in one way - in my personal experience true healing can only happen when a person addresses the cause.

But I wan't asking if the recitation allows for healing of the body - rather I am asking whether the Quranic verses contain a certain vibration to them - as the above mentioned verses appear to be unexplained. Remember that the Quran means recitation out aloud - not just reading and understanding for oneself.

Vibration can be that it lifts you higher spiritually or just super charges you in feeling good - it doesn't have to be just healing the body of any illnesses (not all people have illnesses) ....or it could be something more beyond our understanding.

.....some places I visit I feel calm other places I can feel disturbed.

Just want to clarify that what I meant by the above statement is that we are required to say teh verses in our salat out loudly but not too loudly. It does not mention about saying them queitly over in our minds.

                Peace to all,

Ok , i just wanted to add something thats kindof related to the topic, and it may sound silly but,, I notice that when I recite my prayers I will start to rock back and forth slowly as I say them, I dont know why since I used to pray alot as a christian and I never did this, but since doing Quranic prayers I have, I dont know why but maybe its related the poetry and tempo of the prayers.

                Any ideas?

                Kurt

No, it does not have any effect. If it had effect, then thousands upon thousands of people would not have been killed by fellow muslims in Iraq. Nor would the 7/7 bombings have taken place. The healing comes from its application, not from its recitation.

If it (the recitation) really is from God then perhaps it could have an effect - a very subtle one http//noosphere.princeton.edu/terror.html

The Quran doesnt confirm that the recitation would not have a healing effect. But it does say to recite out loudly when we do the salat (I am assuming the translation I am using as an example is true). Perhaps this is for the purpose of others learning about Quranic wisdom, who knows - however I still don't have the answers to the reason why I posed my question in the first place - what were the verses implying???

Additionally we are required to clean ourselves before hand - thus purifying ourselves/raising our vibrations???

OPF -with your argument- If there were a God then He wouldn't have allowed such killings in the first place - because He the eternal is capable of all things...????? Do you see that sometimes just because X does not add up to Y does not mean that X and y don't exist independantly.

Sorry but it does not work that way.

CLAIM #1 That quranic recitation has a positive effect behind "vibrations"
CLAIM #2 That recitation of the quran heals people

TEST #1 Do reciters of the quran always carry out good deeds?
TEST #2 Do quran reciters stay in good health?

                      RESULTS #1 NO.
                      RESULTS #2 NO.

Here's a Niels Bohr quote - Don't tell God what to do. This line

If there were a God then He wouldn't have allowed such killings in the first place

Is completely and utterly fallacious. If you believe in a God then you already have your results - that God allows such killings in the first place. Why then would you need a "healing sound" if there was no worldy harm in the first place? Please think...

Now, what are these "vibrations"? Do you have any links discussing these "vibrations" that don't employ

                      1.) New age thinking
                      2.) "Quantum metaphysics"
3.) Philosophising without any reference to reality

I doubt it. Sincerly doubt it.

OPF - You have misunderstood me! I agree with you Quran reciters don't necessarily stay in good health or mind and I already know that God allows for the kiling sto take place - but noen of that is what I am investigating here.

I am essentailly trying to investigate the meaning of the verses that I have highlighted - not to decipher behavioural patterns in people.

Also is it possible that the vibrations are only increased for the beleivers - not the disbeleivers who are reciting? i.e "For those who believe, it is a guide and healing. As for those who disbelieve, they will be deaf and blind to it, as if they are being addressed from faraway." (4144)

I don't have any Quran based evidence for vibrations. But I beleive that magic is accepted in the Quran as a reality (and all things are possible to God).

                            Peace "humandesign",
Magic by definition is not real as it means trickery or the ART of deception. This has nothing to do with the paranormal. Please read bro Arnold's article on the evolution of thinking at 19.org. It is a myth to beleive that the Quran asserts paranormal events. GOD Bless!

I think recitation itself can become a healing to a person. It's all a matter of believe. So if one does not believe that it is a cure, even a slight of doubt, it couldn't become one. Same like medicines, therapy, or natural or traditional medicine.

In my sunni tradition, i was taught that Verse 2255 (ayatul kursi) is a powerful recitation that can drive off evil or ghost. I came to believe it that way. So if i'm alone, when i felt like i'm not alone, this verse always came to my mind. And when recited (in arabic) it does give some strength and peace. I don't even know the meaning. Like brother OPF (no offense), since he had believed that recitation is not a healing/medicine, it will not become one to him. No matter how hard he recited, maybe an English recitation is the way for him. In healings, maybe he believed modern medicine is the cure, then it the modern medicine is the most suitable cure for him. I'm sure he heals faster that way. Sort of like that. )

Pure and sincere believe is the key. No doubts, even the slightest. Just like what we are taught that aspirins can cure headaches. Quranic verses, Biblical verses, recitations, medicine, therapy, doctors etc is just the supplement/amplifier to the inner self-healing/ strength. IMHO. God had taught us a couple method of healing and even inspired us. Depends on which is suitable for us, which is easier for our mind to accept it. And He also gives us clues about purification. It's better to be purified (ablution/ shower) to better get close to Him. This verse kinda sets our mind that "If i purify myself this way i'll become clean because God says so.". And thus it's clean. We will feel that it is easier for our heart to reach God. Kinda like self hypnosis things.

                                Hope this helps. )

                                Peace

Yes Thanks Fadhli - personally I have felt the healing effect of the verses (Al-fathihah in particular) too - but I wanted to avoid going somewhere that others would not be able to verify....only perhaps ridicule!

But your explanation about the power of belief helps makes more sense to the aspect of that it is a guide and healing to those with beleif - and not to those without beleif. We do also have the aspect of placebo drugs aswell - but I personally imagine that there is a difference in the manner of effect between the placebo drugs and Quranic recitation....

So thanks Fadhli for that D

Still would appreciate some more verification on the highlighted verses though.

Hmm yeah that verse, maybe it could meant that, or maybe it literally meant a surah like it. Or maybe both.

Just want to show you this link, an attempt to make a furqan?

I'm not sure what Furqan means and although it looks interesting - it doesn't appear to add any more insight to enquiry......

But I would like to ask - the people to whom the Furqan belongs - how did they come to possess/find it? When did it first exist? Do they claim for it to be a supporter of the Quran or do they claim it to be the original Quran itself?

Frst impressions say that it is not really saying anythng new to what is revealed already through our already accepted Quran. But like yourself - i've just viewed some isolated parts.

That's interesting about the trinity - at first glance of the opening declaration 'In the name of the father, the word, the holy spirit and the one and only true God - it reminded me of the trinity but I examined it closer and felt it may be addressing teh one God consecutively rather than talking of a trinity.

Now I notice that there is a chapter labelled the triune. Anyhow the site also does not reveal the history of how it came about.
