On another forum I was asking about this verse, it seems very negative to me. GOD does not like hypocrisy!! Why would He increase it?!

    002.010
YUSUFALI In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease And grievous is the penalty they (incur), because they are false (to themselves).
PICKTHAL In their hearts is a disease, and Allah increaseth their disease. A painful doom is theirs because they lie.
SHAKIR There is a disease in their hearts, so Allah added to their disease and they shall have a painful chastisement because they

It's a common theme in the quran, on the topic of free will - whoever comes to god will grow in that direction by god's leave and whoever departs from god, will grow (or rather, die) in that direction.

I can't remember the verses involved atm.

        Peace be upon you,

YOU are conciousness itself...all else is energy/matter (sub-concious), and it is your job to CONSTRUCT this energy/matter to be a fitting vessel for God to come through. The human body, the lowest level of this energy/matter, the level of molecules...is also subject to being constucted/transformed..that is what we do when we excercise/lift weights...over time, the LAWS that energy/matter operates strictly upon bring out the results.

So the heart, which operates behind your back, out of your control, is a symbol of this energy/matter that you are responsible for constructing. You can liken this energy/matter which brings things to "fruition" as a garden. A garden will bring forth whatever seed you put in it, or if no seeds, then weeds. If there is a "disease" in the garden, it will increase because all a garden is designed to do is "bring forth". Your heart only PUMPS the blood, from first breath to last breath. Your subconcious is your Nafs, and we are told that those who purify the nafs succeed and those that corrupt it fail.

Excuse me, God within, this explanation is quite fruitful, I would say, and in this context your inspired explanation makes me think of infections, they are good in the sense that the climbing of it pushes you to acknowledge that there is something wrong with you. If it staid always at the same level, one would accomodate and would not think of doing anything about it. So it comes to a critical point. One such critical point, for everything, could be death.

          Salaam

            Peace be upon you Huruf,

Yes, it continues to grow because people are not being informed about the powers of thier thoughts and imagination which are the tools of transforming behavior, of programming the subconcious, seeding the garden. The garden/subconcious only does its job...brings forth, and it goes from small to large. Dont let the Huge Flood overtake you...you better get to CONSTRUCTING!

              Peace

To me it simply means that God allows for people to sink into their decrepit states if they choose not to be guided.

That is what was finally pointed out to me that GOD does not actually increase it but allows it.

I think there is still work to be done in translating the Quran correctly.

interesting. i like the distinction between "imposing" and "allowing", and it's come up in conversations with Christian friends, too. that would agree with the Quranic idea that "God does not wrong His creatures, but they wrong themselves".

Yes ayani Christians do see this as too negative an action to impose on anyone.

Does anyone know? Which is the correct translation? Does it actually say increases or allows?

                      Peace

God increases their disease because they bask in it because one reaps what one sows. Granted, God can impose anything on us and I tend to agree with the philosophers when they mention that the only thing important is what we can control, not what is beyond our control. The guidance is withheld from those who deny it.

As far as I can judge, what it says is that God makes increase -zaada. I think it is speaking about the nature of this evil. It says clearly it is a disease. If you do nothinh about a disease, most of the time the desease grows, same as God tells He makes the grass grow, and other things. He is letting us know how nature, moral nature works, and not urprisingly it works the same as the material world. If we visit a brothel, it is just plain stupidity to think that we consent this time in doing it because we want the kicks, but that God will not let us do it again and even ask for something more exotic. If you are ready to give in once, what is stopping you from giving in again and again and for more and more. Or are we going to rely on the fact that the place was not very clean to disuade you from doing something wrong and therefore that God stops you? It says "A disease is in their hearts". So what is God going to stop for us? Shouldn't WE look at our desease? It is we who want closeness to God, Paradise and What not. No t God who wants it. God also makes it clear that we are going to be tested. So where do we feel cheated here? God is not nice? How could He? Buaahh, I am going to cry. We could say that God respects us and therefore He gives us the truth. Alhamdulillah-rab elalamin, el qawi al 'adhim, alladhi la ilaha illa huwa, el hay al qayum. We just have to take it from Him if we are sick , we should look for cure, and there is nothing complicated about it, although it may be damned difficult and the more advanced the disese all the more difficult. We just have to give our best and trust al rahman ad-dunia wa rahim al akhira and really try to cure us the same way that we try to cure ourselves of flu or a lupus or whatever and may kick hospital after hospital and clinic after clinic for it. Muslims should not be sissy.
