    Peace be upon you SalikahDC,

Do Jinn exist as separate beings? Well, two things are for sure 1) Jinn have a will of their own (like us) and 2) they are the unseen. Some of them submit to Allah, some do not. The "thought" theory is an interesting one since we also have no concrete proof that all of our thoughts come from our own will.

Yes, and we can test this by the times when we try to recall a thought and cannot, like a friends name, etc. ALso, if one takes the time to try to STOP THINKING, one will see how difficult it is, so it is not our own will that generates thoughts, thoughts are conditioned memories, they are reflexes. And finally, they are HIDDEN(jinn).

But, there is a little more proof of them being seperate entities than there is proof of Jinn being some sort of independent cognition (i.e. can someone explain the "Thought" theory in regards to the Jinn bowing down to Solomon and performing duties outside the realm of human capabilities...i forget the exact ayat, but I know this story can be found somewhere between Surah 20 to Surah 29). We know that the unseen exist and that man-knowingly and unknowlingly-has had historical interaction with Jinn (per Al Qur'an). With that said, should we really try to debate beyond the descriptions that Allah has given us?

Jinn are the hidden faculties like thoughts and emotions. Emotions are energy in motion and this is what solomon made work for him. YOu can liken emotions to animals (animating/animus/emotive, etc). Metaphorically, one does not let the horse drag him around in the dirt, one saddles the horse and CONTROLS it. Interestingly the root M-L-K (malaika) has to do with control/command. What we are being instructed is that we must gain CONTROL of our unseen faculties and not let them run us. We are to CONTROL our emotions and make them work for us, not be blindly led by the emotions.

      Peace Kyle,

Jinn are the hidden faculties like thoughts and emotions.

Once again, if jinns are "uncontrolled thoughts" and malaika are "controlled thoughts", then what or who is/was Iblis as he/it was/is a jinn? Besides, if jinns are uncontrolled thoughts, then how are they "good", as in good jinns and bad jinns?

        Salaam,

        1. Jinn were not referred to by Kyle as 'uncontrolled thoughts'.

        2. Jinn can be a) shayteen/forces of opposition, or b) malaika .

        3. Iblis/one who became perplexed, seems to be a transition.

        Joe

Once again? When I have I EVER said that jinn were uncontrollled thoughts? Please provide the link to that post.

          Here is my position

Jinn are hidden faculties, staying true to the meaning of the word.
There are sunsets of jinn which are malaika and shayteen
          Malaika are the controlling facluties
Shayteen are the PERVERSIONS of the controlling faculties

Iblis describes one who lives according to the PERVERSIONS of the controlling faculties.

For example, there is a faculty that urges you to unite with others, to form communities, the correct expression from the malaika is to "bow with those who bow" meaning to surround yourself with like minded people who are changing for the better, but the PERVESION would be to come together with just anyone, thugs and murderers, liars and the like.

Thanks for the expalanation. I got your point and cleared my own misunderstandings.

                There seem to be a lot of posts about jinn not being seperate entities, but rather the mind states of humans. While there are several verses that could be used to scrutinize this view, I'd like an explanation on this one;

"'Throw down your staff.' When he saw it moving like a demon, he turned around and fled. ' Moses, do not be afraid. My messengers shall not fear.'"

Several translators use the word "serpent" rather than "demon". What is the best translation? Obviously, if its "Demon" then it poses problems for the idea that Jinn are simply states of the human mind.

far as i can see in the light of quran, humans and djinns seem to be seperate entities. -)

                    Peace be upon you Nazz,

The hidden thoughts, just like all energies, move in WAVES, which is comparable to the movement of a snake, which is why the SNAKE is in several spiritual stories as the deciever.

Apologies on the remark, only meant it as a joke.

Off subject - But yes, I have heard of maldives... didn't they get some of the tsunami there? And wasn't Jet Li there at the time? Or am I confusing it with another island? ?

                      Peace!

Yeah, we got very long waves on the tsunami and more than 2/3 of the country got flooded byy the huge tidal waves
