    Peace LiesExposed,

The present Quran is silent on the amount of Zakat to be paid. Those who are not mature or cannot show their ability to come out of the spell of the false messages of fabricated Hadiths but yet claiming to be free thinkers(free minders), have started finding way out for many unresolved issues such as Salat, Zakat, etc by inventing their own meanings to such duties. The result is that they preach Zakat means purification, Salat contact, etc.

Since the present Quran is incomplete with many parts of the original Quran being lost within the first century of its revelation, we can take the details of such duties from other revealed scriptures like Torah, Vedas, etc. It is the only way out now. The Torah clearly says that we need to pay 10%(one tenth) of all our incomes and Abraham also paid 10% of his incomes. You can verify it with the Torah. It is what is the amount of Zakat ie 10%.

    Yours truly,

    K.Vivekanandan

10% looks fair but is that inclusive of tax or exclusive of tax?

        Peace Bigmo,

Zakat is purely a tax on personal income of individuals. The national governments levy income tax on individuals and firms(both corporate and non-corporate). Since Zakat is to be paid by individuals @ 10% on their incomes and it is their individual responsibility, all welfare states should stop collecting tax on incomes of individuals because otherwise it amounts to double taxation. God willing, if I form a government, I shall do it!!!

Since there is no such a welfare state in the world, we can deduct income tax paid to the government from our(individuals) total income for the purpose of calculating Zakat.
To put it simply, Zakat is 10% on total income of individuals after payment of income tax to government.

          Sounds reasonable again.

However is the 10% of total income or just the excesses as some would say all excesses should be paid regardless of percentage. What happens if your excesses are much less than 10% of total income or more than 10% of total income?

All Quran verses that talk about payment of excess income is related to charity(sadaqah) which is non-obligatory and is purely upto the individuals to decide on whether to pay or not and how much to pay. These verses have nothing to do with payment of Zakat which is an obligatory duty on all individuals.

              Peace

My humble understanding so far is that there are two ways of spending money mentioned in the Quran, the first is Nafaka according to 2215 and the second is Sadakat according to 960.
Concerning the Nafaka , i noticed the following people asked the prophet about it which could implys that they are the one in charge of distributing it and determining its amount, also the people desreving it are the near people like parents, relatives, the poor which the common individual can reach.
On the other hand sadakat in two verses seems to be linked to the prophet who can represnt the governer 9103 and 958, also the people desreving it are not that close a sort of can be reached by the governement. So i think Sadkat is the taxes we pay, and nafaka wich is stressed on in the QUran in many many verses is non identified amount, every one according to his ability , the more he spend the better he will be rewarded from God.

              Any comment will be appreciated

              peace

You are required to spend 20% ( tax) of anything you profit, if you believe in God and the last Day. Anything that you give after that is Zakat. Anything you speand after the 20% is "excess" or " more than what is required."

Zakat = more than what you are required to give. hypno

                    Sure, )

841 And know that anything you profit, one-fifth shall go to God and the messenger, and the relatives, and the orphans, and the poor, and the wayfarer. You will do this if you believe in God and in what We revealed to Our servant on the Day of the Criterion, the day the two armies clashed; and God is capable of all things.

2219 ........And they ask you how much they are to give, say ?The excess.? It is thus that God clarifies for you the revelations that you may think.

i am not sure of the meaning of the arabic word word which you translate it to in excess.

Why has nobody addressed the contention that zakaat does not equate to charity that was mentioned earlier in the thread?

Furthermore I don't even like to use the word charity for sadaqaat. My investigation has shown me that it could be more correctly represented by "the fulfilment of a right that is due", in other words "recognition of the truth that those in need have a right over you".

Me dont know Arabic. But according to my understanding the 20% is obligaroy or reqiered, and anything you give after that is charity or voluntary. Am I making sence? peace

Its either that or the 20% is zakat or charity or the excess..ect... But I think not because the 20% is obligatory... And whatever yopu give after that is charity or zakat or whatever..... peace

I pay 20% tax, around 10% national insurance, I am then charged 15% VAT on goods I buy and around 70% tax on fuel, oh and if this was not enough I pay council tax. Money goes to government. What do they do with it

                            1. Pay benefits to people who have no work
                            2. Provide housing for the poor
                            3. Pay doctors/nurses and everyone else involved in the national health service
                            4. Pay emergency services
                            5. Provides social services to the elderly and children
and a whole lot more which I can not think of at the moment.

Does tax we pay count as Zakat? Specially as it helps towards feeding and housing the poor as well as meeting the needs of children who have been misfortunate in one way or another.

                              1. THAT'S A LOT OF TAXES THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY!!

                              2. I dont think it counts as zakat, since it is a tax and money goes to other things as well. Not sure..but I am leaning more to "no".

6416 Therefore, be aware of God as much as you can, and listen, and obey, and give for charity for your own good. Whosoever is protected from his own hedonistic desires, then these are the successful ones.

                                      Peace every one,

                                      Sure,

841 And know that anything you profit, one-fifth shall go to God and the messenger, and the relatives, and the orphans, and the poor, and the wayfarer. You will do this if you believe in God and in what We revealed to Our servant on the Day of the Criterion, the day the two armies clashed; and God is capable of all things.

This verse only talks about how to share the spoils of war(booty) but not Zakat in any way. The one-fifth ie 20% of the booty is to be allocated for those mentioned in the verse and only the remaining 80% should be shared among all soldiers who participated in the war. Every one who receives his/her share of the booty has to pay Zakat @ 10%(one tenth) on this income(gain/profit). It is also corroborated by the fact that prophet Abraham paid 10% on his share of the booty as mentioned in the Torah.

2219 ........And they ask you how much they are to give, say ?The excess.? It is thus that God clarifies for you the revelations that you may think.

                                      peace

This verse speaks of how one can determine the amount of charity(sadaqah which is not obligatory unlike Zakat) and has no relevance to Zakat.

                                      Yours truly,

                                      K.Vivekanandan

                                        salaams and peace of Allah

here is a link to the submission site, which is saying it's 2.5%, because of 7024 - they say it is the only verse that refers to the percentage. It says that it is "Ma'luum" = Known. http//www.submission.org/ramadan/zakat.html

                                        copied and pasted from submission.org...
"Whenever we receive "net income," the "known amount" of Zakat should be paid or set aside. (see 7024) This known amount as God calls it, is 2.5%. This is the ONLY "known amount" to the submitters (Muslims). This amount, 2.5% was passed down to us, generation after generation, like Salat, from the time of Abraham to our time. We must set aside 2.5% and give it to the specified recipients - the parents, relatives, orphans, the poor, and the traveling alien, in this order (2215). "

so please can we discuss this and get to the bottom of it?

I understand sadaqa is the "excess" but if you are in a situation where you have more outgoings than income, how can we worl out what to give, when there is no excess? i have been making sandwiches to give to the poor, so i give food rather than money. does Zakat have to be a monetary donation or can it be food / clothes?

                                        thanks and peace and salaams
