Endogenous retroviruses have NOT JUST TO DO WITH SIMILARITY. If we find the same ervs in two species docked on to the SAME place on the chromsome WE MUST CONCLUDE that they had a common ancestor. This is because the same ervs dont dock on the same place if any secies acquires them during their lfetime BUT ONLY VIA INHERITANCE. THIS is exactly what happened in case of humans and chimps.
