As we all know hypocrites can do immense damage, they acquire inside knowledge and, were able to deceive even the prophet with their eloquence. Traditional Muslims are crowded with hypocrites but what about free-minds?
    So my question is
(a)Do we understand fully who are hypocrites?
    (b) How do we apply the Qur?anic guidance to identify them?
    peace

Depends on your definition, I consdier myself a hyporcrite. I feel that there is a bit of hypocracy in your post. But as I said, it depends on your definition of a hypocrite.

        Peace Farida,

Somehow I feel that your post was directed more at the Free-Minds crew than anyone else. Is this the way you intended it?

        Peace,

          Salam Farida,

I believe the answer is already alluded to in your post.

One of the indicators is that the hypocrites turn away from the rule of the Quran.

461 And if they are told ?Come to what God has sent down and to the messenger,? you see the hypocrites turning away from you strongly

Yes, this is an important question. Hypocrites are a fact of life. We cannot get rid of them the same way that we cannot get rid of disease, but we should be able to know the signs and also to guard ourselves from them and avoid them, as the truthful Quran tells us to do.

There are many ayas on hypocrites. We may bring them up little by little. Finally, hypocrites are not all that easy to diggest.

            Salaam

              Salaam
Please do tell me what is in my post that makes you think that there is a bit of hypocracy? I am simply asking a question for the benefit of all and asking everyone to beware of hypocrits on free minds even if you thinks its me.
it depends on your definition of a hypocrite.

It does not depend on my definition, the hypocrite concept (munafiqoon) is clearly defined in the Qur'an and if your read the reply from Layth, it' defines one of the clues from the Qur'an

hypocrites turn away from the rule of the Quran

For example you would find hypocrites on free-minds who talk about following the Qur'an and appear to have excellent knowledge of it but shy away when its time to stand for justice.

Somehow I feel that your post was directed more at the Free-Minds crew than anyone else. Is this the way you intended it?

Yes brother Nadeem this post is directed towards freeminders and in the past I have clearly said to traditional Muslims that your paid Imams and the managements commitee of mosques are very obviously hypocrites and you seem to take hypocricy as part of daily life not realising that hypocrites are cursed 4145 The HYPOCRITES will be in the lowest depths of the Fire no helper wilt thou find for them;-
Now I think its to the benefit of everyone to keep an eye on the hypocrites and warn each other of their evil intent.
              peace

                  tryingisnotdoing,

I think she was referring to the mosque structure/committees.

                  Do they fund QuranConnection too?

To remove this as a possibility, why not write me a cheque to fund it, unless you consider yourself a hypocrite

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

ok, so there are hypocrites in this forum. Like Layth mentioned, farida's post hints at identifying such folks. The question next would be how we are going to address any hypocrisy (for the benefit of doubt, let's call it a misinterpretation or misundertanding). We can send private emails to the person and give him/her the quranic verse that may be in clear contradiction to any point raised by the person. Of course all should be done in the politest manner possible.Peace should be our mission. A house divided cannot stand!

If the person ignores the email (maybe we could use something like receipt upon opeing the email feature) and still goes on ranting/imposing we could bring the matter to a wider audience. The idea is to learn from each other and the at the same time do some research to develop independant thinking skills.

                    regards...

                        "hypocrite"
a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc.,
that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions contradict beliefs.

From the definition I copied above @ dictionary.com,
it may be hard to identify a hypocrite without personally knowing an individual.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to identify one from their posts alone?
Inconsistant posts can mean a person is confused while trying to understand a topic.

We should be absolutely sure an individual is a hypocrite before we start labeling them as such.

                        Peace,

The context of the post, its is pretty common is cases like this where the person speaking out against hypocracy usually forgets thier own faults. Commonly making themselves hypocritical. But of course, that itself depends on the definition.

This is exactly what I meant, there is more than a single idea of what the word hypocrite means. It would have been alot easier to say the quranic definition of a hypocrite.

                            1 Surah Number 3, Ayah Number 167
and that He might know the hypocrites.' When it was said to them 'Come, fight or repel in the way of Allah.' They replied 'If only we knew how to fight, we would follow you.' On that day, they were nearer to disbelief than belief. They said with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah knows what they hide.

                            2 Surah Number 4, Ayah Number 61
When it is said to them 'Come to what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger,' you see the hypocrites completely barring the way to you.

                            3 Surah Number 4, Ayah Number 88
What is the matter with you that you are two parties concerning the hypocrites when Allah has overthrown them for what they earned? Would you desire to guide those whom Allah has caused to be led astray? Whosoever Allah leads astray, you will not find for him a way.

                            4 Surah Number 4, Ayah Number 138
Give glad tidings to the hypocrites that for them there is a painful punishment.

                            5 Surah Number 4, Ayah Number 140
He has sent down upon you in the Book "When you hear His verses being disbelieved or mocked, do not sit with them until they engage in other talk, or else you will surely be like them. Allah will surely gather the hypocrites and unbelievers altogether in Gehenna (Hell).

                            6 Surah Number 4, Ayah Number 142
The hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but Allah is deceiving them. When they stand up to pray, they stand up lazily, showing off to the people and do not remember Allah, except a little,

                            7 Surah Number 4, Ayah Number 145
The hypocrites will be in the lowest place of the Fire, you will not find a helper for them.

                            8 Surah Number 8, Ayah Number 49
And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was sickness said 'Those, their religion has deceived them.' But whosoever puts his trust in Allah, indeed Allah is Mighty, Wise.

                            9 Surah Number 9, Ayah Number 64
The hypocrites are afraid lest a chapter be sent down against them telling them what is in their hearts. Say 'Mock if you will; Allah will surely bring forth what you are fearing.'

                            10 Surah Number 9, Ayah Number 67
Be they men or women, the hypocrites are all alike. They order what is evil, forbid what is just, and tighten their purse strings. They forsook Allah, so Allah forsook them. Surely, the hypocrites are evildoers.

I think its is not hypocrite hunting but taking precautions against those who insinuate themselves among believers pretending to be one of them but will not stand and defend believers if put to the test. All their efforts are designed to divide, sow discord, slander and spy. We are warned against those and Prophet Mohammad received cautions about the hypocrites who were lurking around him. Our duty is to recognise them and take precautions but not passing judgment.

As I see it, detecting hypocrites is as reasonable as detecting thieves or criminals. We may not focus on them, but they can do a lot of harm, and even without focusing on them we can know the tricks they use so that we are not robbed or harmed. Also, trying to know and understand a phenomenon, hypocrisy or any other, can help us avoid it in others and and avoid it in ourselves.

In non virtual life, avoiding hypocrites can save one a lot of suffering and trouble. They are not inocuous. Anybody who has interacted with such kind of person knows the harm they can do.

In a virtual setting like this forum, what is the harm that hypocrytes could do? Obviously any deed on the forum must be by virtue of words or pictures. We wouldn't know who gives one million to those in need and helps in any other way or who talks a lot and doesn't bother apart from pretty words.

So it would be a matter of what can be done with words?

If we go by what the media are today we can say that by mere words you can make any problem disappear from the face of the earth in such a way that it will never be solved because it will be effectively ignored. Or you can make problems appear where there is none, or there is a situation completely different to the one portrayed.

So what can a hypocrite do in a forum?

I for one would say that they may restrict freedom. There may be a fear to tread certain subjects because we are wary of the sting or of the manipulation of non sincere people, sometimos even without being aware of our feelings, or we may refrain from it because we do not want to cause unpleasantness that will make other people react unfavourably to us or the the subject at hand, whereas the hypocrite may be looking just for that kind of result, so that his unwanted subjects may effectively be drawn out of discusi?n and hecan impose his aims on the whole even without the whole being conscious of this.

So in fact, we may be doing somebody?s bidding and banning our freedom of expression simple for lack of capacity to analyse our own reactions and finding the way to contend with such situation and the mental constrains it represents. The hypocrite mainly works in our mind. It worms in it.

So yes, no hunting, but a lot of analysing and knowing why we do or not do this or that, by what processes we react one way or another, make to act one way or another, what are our motives, why are we putty in somebody else's hands or why we try ourselves to make putty out of others.

There is of course the politically correct. Is that a hypocritical attainment, based on the ability of groups of people to be sheep happily?

UIT the politically correct we look for approval. There are other subjects which we may avoid not because we want approval, but because we fear not only disaproval, but ostracism, or being classified as outsiders, lepers or nuts or whatever. Simply it is not proper to deal with those questions or subjects or to deal with them in ways deprecated by the Holy Unseen and All Powerful Church of Manipulation and Deceit.

                                  Salaam

As I see it, detecting hypocrites is as reasonable as detecting thieves or criminals. We may not focus on them, but they can do a lot of harm, and even without focusing on them we can know the tricks they use so that we are not robbed or harmed. Also, trying to know and understand a phenomenon, hypocrisy or any other, can help us avoid it in others and and avoid it in ourselves.

It appears, on this site, only you and I are concerned about detecting hypocrites and I believe we already got some idea about them.
However I would like to ask the moderators of free-minds how they give their rating? I have a feeling, as long as a member keeps on posting they get titles like ?Wise one?. No one gives a toss if their arguments create doubts and division, so long as they do sunni, shia bashing its fine. I don?t see this as much different from the Sunni gatherings in the mosques where, I know for a fact, non believing women wrapped up in hejabs spy on them and are welcomed with a smile and..'Salaam sister' etc. No one is bothered if they are really believers, as long as they are wearing the hejab its okey.

You're wrong if you think moderators "sit" down and decide who gets what. Otherwise, they will give themselves all the "wise one" sign. It's computer generated. If you are so much concerned about knowing, click on "members" and go through all of them (only 74 pages while I am typing this post). Look at each one's number of posts and title. And voila! You get your formula. Not only that, but you will find a group sharing the same title and who have completely different opinions on many issues. Try your "Wise One Burnout" and your feeling was right, it's all about number of posts, or if you want it sold to you in a better wrapping, an indicator of the contribution and commitment of the member to the forum. Why didn't you follow your feeling all the way?

How is this compared to sunni gathering in a mosque? Why are you bashing sunnis and veiled women? Remember, it's merely about numbers, not content.
And my last question How is this related to hypocrites and hypocricy? Who is spying on what? Moderators spying on number of posts?

                                        Salaam

If you stay close to the Qur'an, hypocrites cannot harm you. There is nothing you can really do against people, God knows if they are telling the truth. At the end of the day a person chooses to be putty in someone hand's. Its not a hypnotic process. Everyone has their own understanding which is never ever the same. So as long as one is comfortable in one's understanding, whilst willing to learn, you cannot be manipulated.

I do not understand the part about Political correctness.

                                        Peace

                                          Salaam Samia,

Why didn't you follow your feeling all the way?

Because I had some important questions for moderators.

How is this compared to sunni gathering in a mosque?

Like the sunni gathering this site too is a place of gathering, for free-mind?s members.
I know for a fact from Sunni gatherings in the mosque that wearing hejab (an order to cover heads from hadiths) is considered a symbol of piety.
In case of free minds you confirmed that the greater number of posts is a symbol of wisdom and quality (title plus stars)

Why are you bashing sunnis and veiled women?

What makes you think that is what i am doing? Do you expect me to teach you what is actually bashing sunnis and veiled women and what is simply revealing a fact?

Remember, it's merely about numbers, not content.

Yes Mam! I would remember that it?s the quantity not the quality that gives you your title.

And my last question How is this related to hypocrites and hypocricy?

Simple it?s hypocritical to call an idiot ?Wise One? just because he generated lots of posts and moderators should be paying attention to this computer generated lie. Otherwise, what you say you do for this site as moderators is not actually what you do. Understand?

-[ By the way this was not your last questions you have two more for me

                                          Who is spying on what?

I for one would not like to live in Cuckoo Land I would keep my eyes and ear open about it.
My question to you now Do you really believe that no one has access to the IP addresses of the freeminder?s?

Moderators spying on number of posts?

Why are you getting so upset did I touch a raw nerve?
As you have read correctly I understand how computer generated rating is done on this site and I am protesting against these "Star" ratings.
This reminds me of ?Little Britain?; generate a number of posts and the computer says "Wise One " even if the ?wise one? is the complete opposite rotfl

                                          Regards
