Peace,
Its not hugely important in the big scheme of things, but still... just curious....

?O Zachariah! Lo! We bring thee tidings of a son whose name is John; we have given the same name to none before (him).?
This is referring to John the Baptist right?
So were there really no Yahya's/John's before him?
Or is the verse not to be taken literally in the Quran? -
Peace
The word Yahya is not John. The arabic and hebrew word for John is Yuhanna. This verse has posed such a probelm that one scholar suggested the Yahya be changed to Yuhanna. Yahya comes from (to my knowlegde) haya. Meaning modesty. There was a excellent article on islamic-awareness.org that explained this verse, when I find it I will post it. It clears many probelms.

Salam,
First, lets get a better translation (although no translation is entirely accurate) to work with
O Zakariya! surely We give you good news of a boy (boy is not the translation I would use but that is for another thread) whose name shall be Yahya We have not made before anyone like him.
It does not say no one is named Yahua before. It simply points out his uniqueness.
This is referring to John the Baptist right?
Yes.

This is from ISBE (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia)
Johanan
jo-ha?nan (, yohanan, ?Yahweh has been gracious?; , Ioanan; compare JEHOHANAN)
(1) Son of Kareah, and one of ?the captains of the forces who were in the fields? (i.e. probably guerrilla bands), who allied with Gedaliah, governor of Judah, after the fall of Jerusalem, 586 BC (2Ki_2523; Jer 407 through 437). He warned Gedaliah of the plot of Ishmael ben Nethaniah, who was instigated by the Ammonite king Baalis, to murder the governor; but the latter refused to believe him nor would he grant Johanan permission to slay Ishmael (Jer_408-16). After Ishmael had murdered Gedaliah and also 70 northern pilgrims, Johanan went in pursuit. He was joined by the unwilling followers of Ishmael, but the murderer escaped. Thereupon Johanan settled at Geruth-Chimham near Bethlehem (Jer 41). As Ishmael's plan was to take the remnant to the land of Ammon, so that of Johanan and his fellow-chiefs was to go to Egypt. They consulted the Divine oracle through Jeremiah, and received the answer that they should remain in Judah (Jer 42). But the prophet was accused of giving false counsel and of being influenced by Baruch. The chiefs then resolved to go to Egypt, and forced Jeremiah and Baruch to accompany them (Jer_431-13).
(2) The eldest son of King Josiah (1Ch_315), apparently = ?Jehoahaz? (2Ki_2330-33).
(3) Son of Elioenai, and a Davidic post-exilic prince (1Ch_324).
(4) Father of the Azariah who was priest in Solomon's time (1Ch_69, 1Ch_610 (Hebrew 535, 36)).
(5) A Benjamite recruit of David at Ziklag, but perhaps a Judean (1Ch_124 (Hebrew 5)).
(6) A Gadite recruit of David at Ziklag (1Ch_1212 (Hebrew 13)).
(7) Hebrew has ?Jehohanan,? an Ephraimite chief (2Ch_2812).
(8 ) A returned exile (Ezr_812) = ?Joannes? (1 Esdras 838, the King James Version ?Johannes?).
(9) Neh_1222, Neh_1223 = JEHOHANAN, (3).Joha
jo?ha (, yoha', meaning unknown, but perhaps = , yo'ah, ?Joah?; see HPN, 283, note 4)
(1) A Benjamite (1Ch_816).
(2) One of David's mighty men (1Ch_1145).Joah
jo?a (, yo'ah, ?Yahweh is brother?)
(1) Son of Asaph and recorder under King Hezekiah (2Ki_1818, 2Ki_1826; Isa_363, Isa_3611, Isa_3622); he was one of the 3 officers sent by the king to speak to the Assyrian envoys at the siege of Jerusalem (circa 701 BC).
(2) In 1Ch_621 (Hebrew 6); 2Ch_2912, a Levite (son of Zimmah) = ?Ethan? of 1Ch_642 (Hebrew 27).
(3) a son of Obed-edom (1Ch_264).
(4) Son of Joahaz and recorder under King Josiah (2Ch_348 ).Salam,

Peace all,
"Arnab" is so stuck with using the Bible to explain the Quran that he doesnt even think of using scientfic means, like archaeological evidence, to discover what those verses of the Quran actually mean or refer to. This is a grave mistake and it will ultimately play us into the hands of the devil once again just like it did with the sectarians. GOD Bless! -
peace all,
thanks for the input...
arnab with regards to the translation....
" " - what is the meaning of the word ? ......does it has connotations of a "name" also?
Also, if as L.Hu stated... Yahya is not John... what does yahya mean? have there been any other mentions of yahya in the quran?
And you also stated that boy isnt the right translation? Please expand on this?
How would you translate the verse?
