What I learnt from free-minds is that to successfully re-build, the Muslims need to go back to the death of Muhammed and roll-back all judiciary and ethical consideration deriving them solely and exclusively from the Quran - the Closed Book and Nature - the Open Book (using the principle that the Quran explains itself and is enough as a Source of Guidance).
Forget about the Caliphates, Ali, Karbalaah, the Umayyades, the Abbassides, the Fatimides, etc.
These are past generations, as described several times in the Quranic discourses. The reason they ultimately failed is that every civilization will eventually fail, and that they strayed from what Allah wanted them to be an do.
