Ponder death constantly? What could i be doing to make sure i am on good terms with god? Besides helping my people and no pork and alcohol, ect ect. Is there like a basis of simple rules I should be following on top of reading the quaran? Also, what is "GOD Alone"?

My name is tre. I'm new, to this forum and to Islam. I am really trying to turn my life around and live righteously but it is hard, i spend most of my free time reading the quaran, trying to understand it the best i can.
