In chapter 37 there is the scene with Abraham and his son. We remember from previously that Abraham had sacrificed a calf for the two visitors who approached him regarding Lot. That makes Abraham guilty of the bloodshed of the innocent. We know that restitution is made by shedding the blood of who shed the blood of the innocent. Because Ishmael is Abrahams son, Ishmael is flesh-of-his-flesh, and blood-of-his-blood. Therefore, Abraham offers Ishmael to atone for the animal sacrifices. 037:107 And We ransomed him with a great animal sacrifice. Wafadaynahu bithibhin AAatheemin So I propose an alternate reading, where this is understood to be "We ransomed him [Abraham] with a great animal sacrifice [because he was "with" animal sacrifice bloodguilt until ransomed.]" I didn't see any indication Ishmael survived, and according to my understanding of Allah and justice, Ishmael must have been killed by his father in this scene -- However, that would be a sufficient atonement for the killing of the animal, so that Abraham can go on uncursed. In the next passage, he has Isaac with him for his son instead. Hamduillah, slamu alaykum
