  • Modern Holidays?
    J JHamza

    PEACE JHamza, all

i don't think its the pagan origins that are important, but the idea, intention behind observing those events. For example, Khalil celebrates christmas because he sees it as a chance to get together with his family, as opposed to celebrating the birthday of the son of God (isn't that what christmas is?).
Observing mindless rituals that cost you money, health, and time just because someone says you should makes no sense.
There is nothing wrong with observing events or rituals that benefit one as an individual (but that doesn't mean they can preach that ritual)

    Peace phoenix1,
Im not saying that we shouldnt observe, only that if its wrong to keep them if they have pagan origins then we shouldnt if the QURAN mentions such things..But what I dont get is why is it okay to keep them as family get togethers but its not okay to adopt pagan rituals to worship GOD,it should go both ways..imo..I myself still observe Christmas, and Halloween as time for family and friends, but if I find out its wrong according to the Quran then I have no problem stopping..plus we still have Thanksgiving here in America, which isnt pagan or christian really, but A time set aside to give thanks to GOD for our blessings.

    J JHamza

    Peace be upon you JHamza,

All I want to discuss is the PROOF, otherwise I might as well join the Christains in church.

One Might as well join the atheist then, because one cannot prove the existence of GOD using science alone,it comes from belief in what the Quran has to say.I believe the Quran is the proof we need for the existence of GOD..The Quran is all the proof I need because it proves itself by Completing the previous scriptures and from what it says about scientific things and other things that only GOD would have known at its revealing....But if I hold the Quran up as my proof to atheist or scientest who need physical proof then I cannot prove the existence of GOD because He cannot be seen with the human eye or touched by the human hand..You have no proof of GOD or any other spiritual things except whats written in the Quran. So looking at it from that point You have no real proof..so why are you here? And it cant be because you believe ALLAH is the real GOD because youve made it plain in other posts that you see everything as symbols and metaphors..You dont believe they really exist as people, spirits etc..Thats not belief in the GOD of Islaam, thats spiritism at the least...

    Peace,now on to something else...

  • Why is Mary/Maryam NOT considered a Prophet?
    J JHamza

    Peace be upon you,

Those who DELIVER the message are described as "men" by way of SYMBOLISM. Delivery is a "masculine" principle. "Marium" symbolizes the RECEPTIVE/Female principle in all of us. It is this receptive part of us that must be taken away and shielded from "tradition" so that the God's message(masculine) can impregnate us and bring forth the WILL (isa).

    Peace idolfree,
Dont mean to sound harsh or disrespectful, but that sounds alot like a bunch of New Age Wiccan BS or even Yin Yang BS.Where everything is balanced male/female,good/evil.. etc etc .In Wiccan the female goddess is not really a goddess but the female prinicple of all and the god is not really a god,but the male principle and then theres the ALL...Been there done that
    It looks like your saying
    GOD=THE ALL
    Maryiam=the female principle
    Muhammad=maybe the male principle
    etc etc etc

Nothing but Wicca under the title Islaam.

    Peace.

    Questions/Comments on the Quran

  • Judge a faith by its founder, not by its followers
    J JHamza

    Peace Oneway,all,

For one thing the holy spirit isnt a he according to the Hebrew. The hebrew word is feminine ruach. The Greek is pneuma(breath) which is neuter and the Aramaic which Jesus spoke is also feminine. So calling the Holy Spirit a he in the NT would be wrong grammatically and contradictory from a Christian or Jewish perspective.

As for the Greek paraclete its masculine.
I need to do a little more research on this. But it was Jesus who said according to the NT that a paraclete(masculine) would be sent.So the paraclete cant be the female ruach or pneuma.

As for using the OT and NT to show similarites,I dont believe all them are distorted only the parts that contradict the Quran.

    Heres more about Muhammad

According to Deuteronomy 2115-17 the traditional rights and privileges of the first born son are not to be affected by the social status of his mother (being a "free" woman such as Sarah, Isaac's mother, or a "Bondwoman" such as Hagar, Ishmael's mother). This is only consistent with the moral and humanitarian principles of all revealed faiths.
The full legitimacy of Ishmael as Abraham's son and "seed" and the full legitimacy of his mother, Hagar, as Abraham's wife are clearly stated in Genesis 2113 and 163. After Jesus, the last Israelite messenger and prophet, it was time that God's promise to bless Ishmael and his descendants be fulfilled. Less than 600years after Jesus, came the last messenger of God, Muhammad, from the progeny of Abraham through Ishmael. God's blessing of both of the main branches of Abraham's family tree was now fullfilled. But are there additional corroborating evidence that the Bible did in fact foretell the advent of prophet Muhammad?

    The Prophet Like Unto Moses
Long time after Abraham, God's promise to send the long-awaited Messenger was repeated this time in Moses' words.
In Deuteronomy 1818, Moses spoke of the prophet to be sent by God who is
From among the Israelite's "brethren", a reference to their Ishmaelite cousins as Ishmael was the other son of Abraham who was explicitly promised to become a "great nation".

A prophet like unto Moses. There were hardly any two prophets ,who were so much alike as Moses and Muhammad. Both were given comprehensive law code of life, both encountered their enemies and were victors in miraculous ways, both were accepted as prophets/statesmen and both migrated following conspiracies to assassinate them. Analogies between Moses and Jesus overlooks not only the above similarities but other crucial ones as well (e.g. the natural birth, family life and death of Moses and Muhammad but not of Jesus, who was regarded by His followers as the Son of God and not exclusively a messenger of God, as Moses and Muhammad were and as Muslim belief Jesus was).

Deuteronomy 331-2 combines references to Moses, Jesus and Muhammad. It speaks of God (i.e. God's revelation) coming from Sinai, rising from Seir (probably the village of Sa'ir near Jerusalem) and shining forth from Paran. According to Genesis 2121, the wilderness of Paran was the place where Ishmael settled.
Indeed the King James version of the Bible mentions the pilgrims passing through the valley of Ba'ca in Psalms 844-6.

Isaiah 421-13 speaks of the beloved of God. His elect and messenger who will bring down a law to be awaited in the isles and who "shall not fail nor be discouraged till he have set judgement on earth." Verse 11, connects that awaited one with the descendants of Ke'dar. Who is Ke'dar? According to Genesis 2513, Ke'dar was the second son of Ishmael, the ancestor of prophet Muhammad.

For twenty-three years, God's words (the Qur'an) were truely put into Muhammad's mouth. He was not the "author" of the Qur'an. The Qur'an was dictated to him by Angel Gabriel who asked Muhammad to simply repeat the words of the Qur'an as he heard them.

Was it a coincidence that the prophet "like unto Moses" from the "brethren" of the Israelites (i.e. from the lshmaelites) was also described as one in whose mouth God will put his words and that he will speak in the name of God, (Deuteronomy 1818-20). Was it also a coincidence the "Paraclete" that Jesus foretold to come after Him was described as one who "shall not speak of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak (John 1613)

Was it another coincidence that Isaiah ties between the messenger connected with Ke'dar and a new song (a scripture in a new language) to be sang unto the Lord (Isaiah 4210-11). More explicitly, prophesies Isaiah "For with stammering lips, and another tongue, will he speak to this people" (Isaiah 2811). This latter verse correctly describes the "stammering lips" of Prophet Muhammad reflecting the state of tension and concentration he went through at the time of revelation. Another related point is that the Qur'an was revealed in piece-meals over a span of twenty three years. It is interesting to compare this with Isaiah 2810 whichspeaks of the same thing.

Up to the time of Jesus , the Israelites were still awaiting for that prophet like unto Moses prophecied in Deuteronomy 1818. When John the Baptist came, they asked him if he was Christ and he said "no". They asked him if he was Elias and he said "no". Then, in apparent reference to Deuteronomy 1818, they asked him "Art thou that Prophet" and he answered, "no". (John 1 1 9-2 1).

In the Gospel according to John (Chapters 14, 15, 16) Jesus spoke of the "Paraclete" or comforter who will come after him, who will be sent by Father as another Paraclete, who will teach new things which the contemporaries of Jesus could not bear. While the Paraclete is described as the spirit of truth, (whose meaning resemble Muhammad's famous title Al-Amin, the trustworthy), he is identified in one verse as the Holy Ghost (John 1426). Such a designation is however inconsistent with the profile of that Paraclete. In the words of the Dictionary of the Bible, (Ed. J. Mackenzie) "These items, it must be admitted do not give an entirely coherent picture."

Indeed history tells us that many early Christians understood the Paraclete to be a man and not a spirit. This might explain the followings who responded to some who claimed, without meeting the criteria stipulated by Jesus, to be the awaited "Paraclete".

It was Prophet Muhammad who was the Paraclete, Comforter, helper, admonisher sent by God after Jesus. He testified of Jesus, taught new things which could not be borne at Jesus' time, he spoke what he heard (revelation), he dwells with the believers (through his well-preserved teachings). Such teachings will remain forever because he was the last messenger of God, the only Universal Messenger to unite the whole of humanity under God and on the path of PRESERVED truth. He did reprove the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgement (John 168-11)

Following the rejection of the last Israelite prophet, Jesus, it was about time that God's promise to make Ishmael a great nation be fulfilled
    (Genesis 2113, 1

In Matthew 2119-21, Jesus spoke of the fruitless fig tree (A Biblical symbol of prophetic heritage) to be cleared after being given a last chance of three years (the duration of Jesus' ministry) to give fruit. In a later verse in the same chapter, Jesus said "Therefore, say I unto you, The Kingdom of God shall be taken away from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruit thereof" (Matthew 2143). That nation of Ishmael's descendants (the rejected stone in Matthew 2142) which was victorious against all super-powers of its time as prophecied by Jesus "And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder" (Matthew 2144).

Says God as quoted by Moses
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. (Deuteronomy 1819)

    Peace One Way,

    Hi, JHamza,

    Thanks for your post...

That is a well reasoned argument. I think the only difficulty I have with it is that, taken to its logical conclusion, God's gift of free will to us would essentially render God powerless to communicate with us because any of his messages could become distorted beyond repair. If we don't believe that God supernaturally protects the truths he wishes us to learn, then we can place no faith in the Bible, or the Quran, or any other supposedly holy message that has been touched by men with free will.

Just as God knows some will reject his messages, he also knows some will protect and defend his messages and I believe he helps these perpetuate his messages as a guide to us all.

    Thanks.

    /oneway

Yes if you believe that all those messages that were sent was meant for all mankind, but I dont,I believe they were sent to their people, then they distorted the messages..when they wrote them down..The Quran was the only message sent to all Mankind therefor it has been protected from distortion.

Understood, but on what, besides the contents of the Quran itself, do you base your belief that the Quran is the only message sent to all mankind?

    Peace oneway,
On several things, science, nature, and even some from the Bible itself..
like where the Bible mentions "Hear O Isreal,The Lord thy God is One"its found in the OT,The NT And the Quran..The NT says that after Jesus would be sent the Comforter..that was referring to Muhammad etc etc..as for science go here http//www.quranicteachings.co.uk/science.htm

But I could ask the same about the Bible.Where besides the Bible do you get the Bible is truth and meant for all mankind? When even in the Bible it mentions that the Apostles were warned not to go to the east? And that that Jesus was sent only to the lost House of Isreal.

If god knew that people/lucifer would disobey him and spread suffering, why would he create them?(to suffer?!!)While at the same time he is the most merciful? And he wants to test us even though he knows the results? If he is all-powerful(and theoretically we cant be guided without him.) why doesnt he guide us to stop the suffering? Please explain this logic? Peace.

Peace all. To save a life or to prevent serious harm a lie is acceptable. Note the haram(forbidden.) food becomes halal(acceptable.) when ones life is in danger or serious harm is imminent.(2173.) Even kufr(not real kufr, but lying by saying you are a non-believer to save your life,etc..) is acceptable in a situation of compulsion.(16106.)
    Peace all.

    Peace Enquirer,all
Interesting point..We all know that eating pork is forbidden but if we are starving and its the only thing around,we are allowed to eat it to survive.
And we can lie about being Muslims if we are pressured to save ones life..

But one question in 16107 it says people would do this because we love life or this world..wouldnt that apply to someone that lies about being Muslim just to stay alive?Wouldnt telling the truth and being killed for being a Muslim be better?

    Peace ALL,
First Our definitions of what a messenger is doesnt matter,Only GOD's does..A messenger according to the Quran is a Man who is sent with a message from GOD to deliever..As AB pointed out GOD has only sent out men to deliever HIS message(those with issues on this will have to ask GOD himself when the meet Him..While women can be saints and Messengers can be saints..its like All Messengers of GOD are Saints, but not all Saints are Messengers.Maryam was a great person and a saint but she was never commisioned by GOD to deliever message to her people, but her son Jesus was.

    Salaams OracleMir,
Then we shouldnt lie then no matter what..But I am sure if we lie in a situation before we think about what we are doing GOD will forgive us,for He is All Forgiving-Just..
I too would probably be to weak and I am not sure what I would do in such a situation..

As for Joseph's account I think he may have not been thinking straight at the time and later repented of the deed.I'll have to read the Surah to see if it mentions anything like that..Or do you know of any where in the Quran that says he later repented? But even if it doesnt mention it,I believe since he was a Muslim that he most likely did repent.Even Muhammad did things that were not acceptable, and GOD corrected him...We all are human and all do things we later regret..This doesnt make us less Muslims.Only when we do things we shouldnt and know it and dont repent then we are in danger.

    Peace

    Salams JHamza

My position is According to Quran we should not lie even in the situation described by you.

6152 .... You shall be absolutely just when you bear witness, even against your relatives ...

I think I have came accross other verse(s) as well where telling the truth is emphasized upon.

Personally I am a week person ... I am not sure what I would do ...

After reading the story in chapter 12 I am not sure if "playing games" are allowed for a higher good purpose or not.

    Peace CD,ALL

I Just wanted to add, that THIS is very true..While GOD knows all ,He still allows things to happen for certain reasons..
    For Example
Christians believe GOD is all knowing(which is truth)..Yet He still created angels knowing that some would rebel and Lucifer would become Satan the Devil..God knew before hand that Adam and Eve would rebel and eat the fruit of the tree good and evil and therefore be cut off from the tree of Life, yet God still created them,God knew before hand that the majority of the people of the world would reject Him etc etc etc etc..yet He still created mankind.

So Oneway,Using the argument that "why would GOD send prophets with a message knowing that the people would distort the message doesnt hold water"...

  • Is "false accusation" allowed?
    J JHamza

    Salams

I was reading chapter 12. This chapter is based on the story of Joseph.

I am not sure if I understood the story correctly. What I gathered from 1270 is that Joseph deliberately placed a drinking cup in his brother's bag so that his brother could be retained in his country.

    012.070
Falamma jahhazahum bijahazihim jaAAala alssiqayata fee rahli akheehi thumma aththana mu-aththinun ayyatuha alAAeeru innakum lasariqoona
YUSUFALI At length when he had furnished them forth with provisions (suitable) for them, he put the drinking cup into his brother's saddle-bag. Then shouted out a crier "O ye (in) the caravan! behold! ye are thieves, without doubt!"
PICKTHAL And when he provided them with their provision, he put the drinking-cup in his brother's saddlebag, and then a crier cried O camel-riders! Lo! ye are surely thieves!
SHAKIR So when he furnished them with their provisions, (someone) placed the drinking cup in his brother's bag. Then a crier cried out O caravan! you are most surely thieves.
KHALIFA When he provided them with their provisions, he placed the drinking cup in his brother's bag, then an announcer announced "The owners of this caravan are thieves."

If my understanding is right, then this leads to a question Was Joseph's deceptive action acceptable in Islam? He was a muslim (submitter) I believe. Does that mean we can practice deception to achieve higher objectives?

My take was that placing a false blame on someone is an unacceptable act even though if we have a higher good objective in mind. God would not sanction it for muslims under any circumstances.

    Any comments?

    Salaam OracleMir,
    Good question..
Not sure so I'll let some else answer the question.
But on the same note,if you were in a situation that would prevent something bad to happen even death to a loved one, would you lie to keep them safe or tell the truth and see harm or death come to them?Would this be acceptable in Islaam?

  • Modern Holidays?
    J JHamza

Christians celebrate Christmas as the birthday of Christ. That the date coincides with previous pagan ritual days is simply a side effect of Christianity seeking to replace pagan rituals with Christian rituals, as you partly pointed out.

Easter is when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Christ. Date likely chosen for similar historical reasons.

The secularization of both holidays (holy days) by non-believers should not be misconstrued as Christians changing the meaning and significance of the holidays.

I certainly understand if Muslims do not think it proper to celebrate Christian holidays (though the Quran does say Christ was a prophet of God), but that does not mean Christians are celebrating pagan rituals on those days.

    Thanks.

    /oneway

    Peace oneway,
Christians keep non biblical holidays sorry..No where in their Bible does it command or suggest its okay to celebrate the Birth or Resurrection of Jesus..It does say though in Jeremiah 101-10 Not to adopt the ways of the Heathen, and not to cut down trees and decorate them with silver and gold..it also says that Jesus was resurrected 3 days and 3 nights after his death, which if was on Friday as they claim would have been (FriNight=1+,SatNight=2+,SunNight=3 nights;Sat=1+,Sun=2+,Mon=3 days) late afternoon Monday, not sunday morning(but alot of people believe he died in the yr 31 CE,And Passover fell on Wed that yr,so 3 days and 3 nights would have been late saturday, explaining why he was already risen as their bible says come sunday morning before sunrise)..But thats a whole other story and topic. It does show in the New Testament though that Christians both Jewish and Gentile observed the same days as the Jews did..Passover for the Death, etc etc..and history shows the same thing up until the Catholic Church changed it all.

    Salaam JHamza,

    Salaam NoProgressive,
Why would it be different between Halloween,St Patricks Day and Xmas? They all have both Christian and Pagan Influences..Halloween originated with the Celts as a Night of the Dead,Catholics adopted it as the night before All Saints-hence All Hallows.St Patricks day is basically a Catholic(polytheist) holiday but has deveopled into a time for drunken revelry. And Xmas has all the above,Paganism wraped in Christian trappings.

The question should be how far back do you want to go when it comes to origins? I mean we can go wayyy back with many things that we probably do, and see how they originated in paganism... but they no longer carry the same meaning, therefore they mean something different now. we live in the present, not in the past.

    salaam

    Salaams NoProgressive,
Okay then is there any where in the Quran that states we should avoid customs, holidays with pagan origins or birthdays?

It just seems contradictory to say its okay to celebrate or to keep traditions we have even though they had pagan origins, yet at the same time say we cant perform salat, circle the black stone in Mecca and kiss it etc in the same way that Mainstream Muslims do because of there pagan origins.Whats your opinion on this and everyone elses??

    General Issues / Questions

  • Modern Holidays?
    J JHamza

    As SAlaam Alaikum,

    This is my opinion

I believe that celebrating Christmas and Hannukkah, and other non-Muslim "still quiite religious based" holidays are wrong.

Some Muslims try to argue that Christmas has become secular, therefore it's ok to celebrate. It is my opinion that Christmas is still far from secular, and it's only the media that really perpetuates it as "secular" becuase they don't wish to offend non-Christians... but it is my opinion that in the homes of people, it is still quite religious! So i believe that celebrating Christmas, such as buying gifts, wrapping them up, and not giving them until the 25th is wrong for a Muslim to participate in. And even amoung that, it is still generally assumed that if you are celebrating Christmas then you are a Christian...

Now I don't believe that getting together on the holidays of other religions is wrong. Why? Because often this is the time where most of the kids are out of school, and parents are off of work, so it's a perfect time to have a large family get together. Plus everything is closed, so you basically have nothing to do, so why not go hang out with the family? If this becomes a tradition of a Muslim family... getting together on Christmas, I don't see a problem... as long as they don't become so wrapped on the date itself. Like suddenly they are worried about "not making it in time for Christmas".

I believe that celebrating holloween, St. Patrick day, 4th of July, Thanskgiving are ok to celebrate with spirit (like dressing in green, setting off fireworks, and making a turkey) are ok though beucase those are very secular holidays and I don't believe that in general anyone is going to reassonably mistake your religious affiliation by celebrating them.

While as celebrating Xmas it's quite reasonable for someone to mistake you as a Christian.

I'm unsure as to what the Qurna says... but I know we aren't suppose to act like non-believers.

    salaam

The sample calendar can also be found on this page

    http//www.free-minds.org/articles/science/calendars.htm

    http//www.free-minds.org/calendars.htm

    SALAM,
Ive read the article and the article on PM the PM article makes alot of since..if we are going to have a calendar with a leap month.I couldnt get the zip file to open.

But having 12 months with 30 days like the first article says will leave the yr off by 5 days every yr,so there would be a need to have 5 months with 31 days and 7 months with 30 days (total 365 days) and then a day would have to be added at times to one of the other months. But with this style months would not begin exactly on the new moons,so having a luni-solar calendar makes the most since for a secular calendar if we have to have An Islamic calendar at all...
