Hi, I know this has been covered before, so apologise to all. I have 2 English translations of AQ. The first one I quite like, it's by Abdel Haleem. I've read that through and find it easy to read. The second one, my dear husband bought for me, it's hard back, bulky and has Arabic text next to the English. It's called Towards Understanding the Qur'an by Sayyid Abl A'la Mawdudi, translated and edited by Zafar Ishaq Ansari. There are lots of places with phrases in brackets (meaning additions by the authors), also fairly lengthy 'explanations' which are totally influenced by Hadith etc. I've not got far in reading it, but for example, their translation of 55 is , when I compare translations (over 20 online), they all say 'good things' not 'clean things'. It makes a big difference.

I hate to say it, but I don't like this translation nearly as much. My husband is fully mainstream and his influence in that regard is getting stronger because of a group he goes to regularly. How do I break it gently to him that I don't like the precious copy he bought me?

Just posted a message on the 'how I came to God alone' section. I'm new here. I've been hanging around for a while though, reading various posts. Last night I was up way past my bedtime reading the post about Pharoah. I'm intriguied, but one question is if Pazuzu's posts are true and the whole Egypt saga is misplaced, how does this 'fact' change the status quo if recognised? (sorry if I'm being really thick) But we all know the maxim that the victors dictate history. My brain is fuzzy with tiredness, but after these 1000's of years, who will admit to such a massive lie?

People/countries/companies/organisations (you name it) who have the most to gain/lose and have invested heavily into something will go to the ends of the earth to make sure the scenario they want plays out. (not sure where my thoughts are going with this thread)

I've been lurking around this site for a while, reading way into the night! I was raised liberally but came in to contact mainly with Christianity, although I also grew up in a predominantly Buddist country - I'm a 3rd culture kid (not so much a kid anymore).

My husband is a Sunni Muslim, although when I married him, he wasn't religious and now he is very mainstream. We live in Turkey. I started reading the Qur'an while on holiday in the UK and I'm mostly convinsted by the Qu'ran/God alone message. I'm worried though that I won't feel as 'free' in a mainstream dominant culture/country eg. Turkey to explore this path, not that I've actually talked face to face with any like minded people in the UK. The friends who gave me the Qu'ran translation do things like banning pet dogs from being in the house because it'll render them 'unpure' for salat purposes- this is from a white British convert???

Apologise for the brief intro. I've been meaning to post for a while, but I'm usually too tired by the end of the day to say much.
