Haha sure... using that logic, I can participate in this event where people pose nude to create an art to raise money for charity. No, but no thanks D. Few weeks ago though, my friend said that gambling in a small amount (playing scratchies or Lotto) is OK since we're not gonna lose a big amount to make us destitute, then I just replied, "Sure, a bit of zina is okay then as long as you make sure you don't fall pregnant." and she went quiet lol.

This is so true... it reminded me of a woman who once asked a sheikh if it was ok to work as a prostitute as long as she gave the money to charity.... hahahaha

Wakas Personally I think that it is still gambling, whether or not charities are involved... I take the 2219 to mean that it should be avoided even though one can argue that there is some good in it (like alcohol)... Also looking at the meaning of the word maysir... it also has connotations of "risk taking" doesnt it? And in playing the lottery it is simply a game of chance and risk... although i have not really looked at the end of verse 2219 - what is it referring to? I will need to look into it.

how much of your money will actually be transferred into charity? Don't fall into a trap, thinking that you're doing good deeds, but in reality, you're not..

Peace.... in terms of how much will be given to charity... well the same applies to any charity donation - how much of your money actually goes towards the needy (as opposed to marketing/pr/charity expenses etc)? Unless you give directly to a person in need you never have a guarantee of how much of your donation goes to the person in need or to the running of the operation.

Just off at a slight tangent.... do you think buying a charity raffle ticket is gambling also?

Definitely not easy. It's a huge step and I'm not sure if I'm completely ready to make it but patience is key, in all situations. I don't want to make any hasty decisions either for the wrong reasons because then I'd be in another pickle P

oops sorry all... i didnt mean people in this particular topic... just in general many on free-minds have a very negative attitude towards hijab

secondly i didnt mean that taking off hijab = dressing immodestly because i dont belive the hijab is found anywhere in the quran and anyone can be dressed modestly without it, but i was just giving the example of my friends (and im not judging them and i love them coz they are my friends) I didnt mean to sound judgemental so sorry if thats how my post sounded....

and i also admire those girls who have the courage to take it off because its an incredibly difficult thing to do - someone likened it in an earlier post to the first day you wear it - its the same scary feeling... so well done to those girls who have the strength of conviction to do so... maybe ill get there someday... maybe not...

I like the way you said it HNF.... there is nothing wrong with learning a lesson from covering your hair and then moving on to the next phase in your life without it ..... but taking that step isnt an easy one

Wow just followed this discussion now... I also wear the hijab, but have been debating it with myself for maybe over 3 years now... like many have said, I used to wear it covering my neck etc... then I went to Spain and the Spanish muslims wear it in a gorgeous way, so copied their style (ish) and so now my neck shows (has been that way for over a couple of years) but I always have a thin polo top on so only half a neck really... then in the winter i wear beanies which are great for just running out to the shops or something... about taking it off completely... i did it once but felt guilty about it.... i dont want to take it off out of arrogance because im bored of wearing it... but at the same time i know its not in the quran... then again... it has helped me a lot... i dont think i would be so confident in dressing modestly if i wasnt wearing it... i have friends who took it off and the backlast was huge from the community but also i look at the way they dress now and the sleeves and pants get shorter and shorter as more time without hijab go by till they end up in spagetti tops and mini skirts... i dont want to end up that extreme either and im worried that if i take it off, a few years down the line thats what will happen because its so easy to get sucked into fashion and finding "solutions" to revealing clothes (eg. ill keep a cardigan over the spagetti top.. then that comes off / ill wear tights under my skirt ... they they go)

I think when someone has worn it for a while it becomes so hard to take it off... also im not looking forward to the extra morning time ill have to spend sorting my hair out before work.... lol

If Ghusl = whole body, how come the tayammum only prescribes face and hands?

i think tayamum is about practicality - ie. if there is no water - when might that have occured? when travelling maybe? so if you're being practical, then it doesnt make sense to strip down and "bathe" in clean soil... whereas a wiping the hands & face is doable.

I don't think 2012 is the coming of "the hour" since no-one knows this but God. I think its just the end of the world as we know it. It represents the end of the age of pisces and the beginning of the age of aquarius as some have phrased it. Now im not one for conspiracy theories but maybe it will be the era of the new world order?

either way ... God only knows so why not just worry about today....
