Whether open or secret; take not life, which Allah hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom.

  • REQUEST FOR CONSULTATION: I CAN'T GO TO MY DISBELIEVING PARENT FUNERAL!!!
    S Suppliant

Okay I see a lot are really focusing on the example I have given about my family, it is just an example.

So let us try it a bit differently this time....

Based on Quranic evidence presented and your own knowledge of the Book

    1. Abraham who asked forgiveness for his disbelieving father and we are told to not follow his example in that.
    2. Noah who was admonished for addressing Allah about his disbelieving son
    3. Lut who fled the city early in the morning and left behind his disbelieving wife
    4. Shuaib turning away from and refraining to grieve over those who had disbelieved and died among his people
    5. Muhammad being commanded not pray/support nor stand at the graves of those who disbelieved and died while being disobedient.

In general forget about my family's example....
...Would you say that a believer should in any way support and attend the funeral of one who has clearly died as a disbeliever?

    Please be honest thanks.

    Peace.

To answer your question, I would say that a believer should not in any way support and attend the funeral of one who has clearly died as a disbeliever.

However, please note the following in the Qur'an

The Prophet is nearer to the believers than their selves; his wives are their mothers. Those who are bound by blood are nearer to one another in the Book of God than the believers and the emigrants; nevertheless you should act towards your friends honourably; that stands inscribed in the Book. - 33.6

In my understanding, it stands to reason that if your family is closer to you than believers, they must be closer to you than disbelievers. Family is different when it comes to separating them from believers vs disbelievers, so while the answer to your question is "a believer should not support..." this instance may not apply to family.

If you consider the example of Abraham and his father, as well as Noah and his son. Both these prophets prayed for their kin UNTIL God admonished them. I suppose if God admonishes you for praying for the disbeliever, then you can continue to pray for kin.

This is my opinion that I have formed from the above verse and what I know of the Book. Please put this into consideration when formulating your answer.

Best of luck to you, bro. Listen to what God has to say.

  • REQUEST FOR CONSULTATION: I CAN'T GO TO MY DISBELIEVING PARENT FUNERAL!!!
    S Suppliant

Recently my grandpa passed away my mother asked me to help her write an eulogy, I have never met the man, nor heard his voice, nor know his name, nor has he ever pen-palled me or come to visit me EVER. Furthermore, he basically abandoned my mother when she was a teen and tended to his other family. My mother had not seen him for nearly 30 years before he passed. I obviously do not hold this man in any esteem, rather the opposite. He neglected my mother and us. He always visited his other family and grandchildren and called them and conversed with them frequently on the phone. I literally have nothing nice to say about him. I do not want to support such a man in anyway. I am also convinced he was not a muslimina. I am vehemently opposed to supporting anything in relation to this funeral, including helping my mother write this eulogy. I feel it would violate the command in 984. Therefore, I do not feel bad when I told my mother I could not help her. I cannot obey her on associating with Allah what I have not been given any authority on.

I'm thinking you won't like my answer, but if it helps, you said that you don't know this man, your grandpa. You are also convinced he was not a muslimina.

This is what the Qur'an says

O believers, eschew much suspicion; some suspicion is a sin. And do not spy, neither backbite one another; would any of you like to eat the flesh of his brother dead? You would abominate it. And fear you God; assuredly God turns, and He is All-compassionate. - 49.12

I suppose if you never knew the man, can you say he was not a muslimina and not call yourself suspicious?

Just my two-cents on this. It sounds a bit personal, as you do not want to have anything to do with the funeral because of how he has treated your mother & family. But then again, I do not know your situation. Please ask God for help on this.

  • Why pray 5 times (ritually) if we can remember God in our thoughts?
    S Suppliant

    Selam,

    Please see the following verse

2945 Recite what has been revealed to thee of the Book, and perform the prayer; prayer forbids indecency and dishonour. God's remembrance is greater; and God knows the things you work.

My take on this is that prayer/salat really helps us, but the key note is that remembering God is more important than doing prayer.

  • Why does the Quran and Bible describe the Sun as going around the Earth?
    S Suppliant

Quran-2133 ?It is He who created The Night and Day, And the Sun and Moon; each of them Swim (float) along in its own course.?
Qur'an 911-2 "By the sun and his brightness, And the moon when she followeth him"

Qur'an 3637-40 "A token unto them is night. We strip it of the day, and lo! they are in darkness and the sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise. And for the moon We have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf. It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit."

The verses above are pretty clear to me. For example the Sun following the moon, the Sun runneth on unto a resting-place, the Sun not able to overtake the moon. God could have just put a few words in to say the Earth rotates but you mankind see it as the Sun and stars rising and setting.

In a separate note, can someone please advise me if i can get those dam captchas removed everytime I make a post. It's real annoying having to verify each post.

I'm not sure the Quran says that the sun follows the moon?

Not providing anything too useful to you, I'm afraid, but I find it amazing that "It is not for the sun to overtake the moon" to be awesome in taking into account solar eclipses when the moon overtakes the sun. bravo

  • The Quran objectifies women
    S Suppliant

314 Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.

I see what you mean about this verse to seemingly objectify women but do you not also agree that women can also desire women? People is not defined to be men. It can incorporate either gender.

In any case, the REAL MAIN MESSAGE of that ayah (what we are supposed to take away and learn from this) is that all physical things we experience is only the enjoyment of the life of the world, but with Allah (following His Guidance) is better than what we all experience in the life of the world.

  • Inheritance according to Qur?an
    S Suppliant

    Peace Noon,

I'm sorry if you have already addressed this, but I can't seem to find this situation on your first page with all the scenarios put forth. I also saw that you had a correction a few pages back. Has this been reflected on the first page by any chance? It would be good to have that page with the most up-to-date info for your calculations.

How should the inheritance be for 1 son and 1 daughter? I do not believe parents will inherit in this case, as it is quoted from 411 "...And to his parents, each one of them shall have one sixth of what is inherited, if he has a child...." (free-minds.org translation). Since there are children, parents do not inherit.

Is it obvious that the they both receive half the inheritance? Or should this part of the ayah be applied 411 "...To the male shall be as that given to two females." even though there aren't two females?

    Thanks in advance!

    Questions/Comments on the Quran

  • First two "sentences" of Ayah 4:34
    S Suppliant

    Peace Ladies!

Just wanted an opinion of what every one thinks this part of ayah 434 means?

434 The men are to support the women with what God has bestowed upon them over one another and for what they spend of their money. The upright females are dutiful; keeping private the personal matters for what God keeps watch over. As for those females from whom you fear desertion, then you shall advise them, and abandon them in the bedchamber, and separate from them. If they respond to you, then do not seek a way over them; God is Most High, Great.

    ^ free-minds.org translation

Sorry! I know very little Arabic.

I was thinking the part in bold may mean any number of things, but not sure if this is right.

Here is what I think This first two "sentences" of the ayah talks about how the main function of men and women are to provide a stable foundation for a family unit. Men are to support women and their children, but women must also be upright (not lewd like in 415) and dutiful (assisting the husband at home with his affairs as well as a duty of care to children). The part I am stuck on is what God keeps watch over? Sure, we are to keep the relationship between man and wife private from others, but what does God keep watch over? Our relationship? Perhaps children or what is in our womb? Or is it merely our womanly private parts (I doubt this thought as God tells us to be upright already)?

Following that, I believe the second half of the ayah talks about what happens when the relationship "breaks down" when the women do not do their parts.

Please let me know what you think.

    Thanks in advance, ladies!

  • Paradise and Judgment Day
    S Suppliant

    Selam!

Just wanted to know what everyone thinks about this

In the Qur'an it has been referenced that there are already people in Paradise, ie those who are slain in the way of Allah.

So as Judgment Day has yet to come, does that mean these people who are already in paradise will be judged again on Judgment Day?? Or do I have a misreading that there aren't any humans in paradise yet?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers~
