As Salaam Alaikum,
Hello. I am from the United States and was raised in a Muslim family. My father is a Sunni. My mother isn't a sunni but hangs out with other sunnis and likely doesn't have a clear opinion about hadiths.
Me, I have always found something very wrong with them. For the past several years I have enjoyed this website, different groups on the internet, and other websites that advocate "Quran only".
Unfortunately, I am married to a man who believes in hadiths and many other things that are not in the Quran (Dear brothers and sisters I really encourage you to find a spouse who believse in Quran-only. Do not settle. Be patient and find someone.). This is a big issue for us in our relationship and we try to avoid this conversation as much as possible. We have a child together now, and now I am more determined to raise him in a nice Muslim home and have him understand the difference between what I believe and what his father believes. I really hope when my son is old enough to make his own decisions he will reject hadiths as well.
Like many of you, I too share that feeling of being alone in my beliefs in my own community. I rarely ever go to the mosques, socialize with other "Muslims", and neither can I relate to them. Hadiths are so sewed into their fabric of their lives it is hard to have a conversation with them. When they bring up what is "haraam", I can just raise my eyebrows and say, "Well, if that is what you believe."
I use to wear a "hijab", and I even wore skirts for about a year. Sometimes I really miss that feeling of belonging to a community... a cult. And doing all of that other "traditional" stuff people do. But when I was living that life I knew it was a lie and mostly about "image".
Anyways, I feel that it is really time for us to raise our voice even louder. Every day I think of who is going to be our own version of MARTIN LUTHER--- he was the one who called out the Catholics about all of their innovations.
Also, I am a journalism student with a small background in film. Which brings me to askyou all to please check out my post under the "Projects/Conferences/Events" tab. I would really like to do a documentary and would like ideas on topics, people to interview, etc.
