Btw, the 'we only use 10% of our brain' thing is a myth.

Brainscan studies show that every part of our brain has some kind of function... The brain is an expensive organ as it demands 20% of our energy intake, it would be a horrible waste if only 10% of it is working!

It is funny, the 10% use of the brain joke was made by Einstein during an interview. He made it as a joke, as the interviewer asked him why he was smart and if he was different from other people. He remarked, 'people only use 10% of their brain' to mean that he isn't special, all people have the same possibility if they want too.

Later on, this joke became an urban fact

My teacher told me that we use less then 5% of our brains?.

          Peace all,

I think, in general, we use very little of our brain capacity because in our daily routines, there is very little brain function required. And we become immersed in our routines, thus leaving the larger capacity untapped. This can be seen quite clearly in the special abilities of some autistic people.

Yes I realize that. However, I can't see how the rest of the verse can be translated as " then made male and female cells, and then shaped you into human beings, males and females..... .?
There are no mentions of male or female or shaping humans.

Also, while I am having a hard time fully understanding the verse in Arabic, the verse says that the the nafs and its partner asked god to be given something good so that they become thankful. I can't see how this can be applicable to cells.

I think my question got lost in the discussion. I am really interested in the answer.

I already had said earlier that I use QXP, a Tasreef translation. Look my post up earlier in the thread.

                  Peace all,
Once again there is a problem of understanding the meaing of the phrase "using only 10% of the brain". One can understand this as 1) we always use only particular 10% of the total brain regions in our lifetimes whilst the others always remain inactive or 2) we never use more than 10% of our brain AT ANY PARTICULAR TIME or 3) we never use more than 10% OF THE TOTAL STORAGE CAPACITY IN OUR BRAIN throughout our lives. So first youve got to define a little bit more precisely what you mean. I can say for sure tht point 1 is total nonsense. As for pt 2 im not sure and reg pt 3, yes i can agree with tht and i dont think anyone has ever exhausted his brain's storage capacity throughout his life. GOD Bless!

                    Peace Arnold,

I consider myself really open minded, which makes me critical of almost anything I hear or read. I am also completely open to new interpretation of verses. That being said, I can't see how this verse can in anyway be translated the way you quoted it. I'd appreciate it if you can grab my hand and walk me through it slowly.

                    Thanks

                        peace

arnold, you translated 7189 like this
7189 (The Message encompasses life in its totality.) Recall that Allah created life from a single life cell, then made male and female cells, and then shaped you into human beings, males and females..... .?

                        this is from freeminds translation
7189 He is the One who created you from one person, and He made from it its mate to reside with. When he dwelled with her, she became pregnant with a light load, and she continued with it; then when it became heavy, they called on God, their Lord "If You give us an upright child, then we will be among the thankful."

don't know which one is more correct,
but anyway, based on that is it a fact that humans came from a different species?

is it possible that this "single life cell" refers to how a human is created in a womb?

somewhere else it's also mentioned the stages of development.
could it be that it refers to how a human is created in different stages in a womb?

                          Peace Nadeem, all,

Nadeem, please correct me if I'm wrong, but when using Windows XP, isn't it true that many/most applications use up 100% of the CPU to start up? This is how I view the usage of our brains. Yes, we may use 100% or slightly less of our processing power in our daily activities, but we haven't used nearly all the potential of that power.

A 3ghz CPU running MSWord is not producing the same potential as a 3ghz CPU running a music studio. Yet both can be running at 100%. I think that's what people like Einstein were referring to.

Autism displays this in that people can perform seemingly superhuman abilities with only their brains. Is it coincidence these people often lack the simple day-to-day abilities that occupy so much of our time?

                          Peace,
                          Tay

JK- Thats why it is so important to LOOK AT THE REFERNCE given after each vital statement. When wiki does not give a ref for a claim you can check the history and see if it has been there consistently or check using google to fnd whethr its reliable otherwise discard it. Infact in the long run this type of allowing free editing with refernces reduces biases and ultimately leads to the truth. Remeber that ALL parties are editing NOT just certain ppl whove got biases against those claims. YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO USE IT. Then youll save yourself from making these childish assertions and see that this way theers no elite who makes the article and everyone has to believe them. Those were the dark ages and you shld appreciate tht wer out of them. As soon as you allow only certain "experts" to edit an article, you once again have the elite forcing more or less their biases on you. GOD Bless!

7628 (Who gave them the mind and body to behave the way they choose?)We it is Who have created them, and strengthened their frame. And if We Will, We can replace them entirely with other nations.

This is a very interesting verse, could this be related to other competing hominids that lost out to us.

Ibn Khaldun wrote in his Muqaddimah, an Introduction to History

"One should then look at the world of Creation. It started out from the minerals and progressed, in an ingenious, gradual manner to plants and animals. The last stage of minerals is connected with the first stage of plants, such as herbs and seedles plants. The last stage of plants such as palms and vine sis connected with the first stage of animals, such as snails and shellfish which have only the power to touch. The word 'connection' with regard to these created things means that the last stage of each group is fully prepared to become the first stage of the next group. The animal world then widens, its species become numerous, and, in a gradual process of creation, it finally leads to man, who is able to think and reflect. The higher stage of man is reached from the world of monkeys, in which both sagacity and perception are found, but which has not reached the stage of actual reflection and thinking. At this point we come to the first stage of man ( after the world of monkeys). This is as far as our (physical) observation extends.

This is just one example out of hundreds of opinions and observations made by Muslim scholars in the early centuries of Islam. When Darwin made his own speculations based on the Muslim Theory of Evolution, it was taken up by the Materialist Movement of the West. Because the Theory of Evolution is not supported by the Bible, and also because Darwin's speculations gave room for a Creator-less creation, Darwin's version of the Theory was taken up by the Atheist. Through this Evolution Theory was seen as equal to Atheism, and Muslims, through loss of their knowledge and their aversion of the Materialist Colonial powers of the West that had conquered them, became to reject the Theory of Evolution. And took up together with the Christian world, the concept of Instant Creation. A concept that goes directly against the language of the Quran and its Message as will be shown.

Very interesting information. I know you haven't been active on FreeMinds for the last few years. But I'd like to thank you for sharing this information anyway. In your last/latest post on this forum, you mentioned that you hope to drop in time by time if your academic studies and family allow it. I wonder when you are going to return to the forum. I wonder when you are going to to return to FreeMinds. It seems that you prefer to spread the message of Al-Quran outside of this forum. Something tells me that you are not going to return to this forum. But I could be wrong. I hope I am wrong. Because I think you made very valuable contributions to "Quran-orientered/centered islam" on this forum. In my view, Tanveer and Pazuzu also made very valuable contributions to "Quran-orientered/centered islam" on this forum. But unfortunately, both of them have left the forum. Arnold, I think you are a sincere soul my dear brother. Tanveer and Pazuzu, I think you are sincere souls too my dear brothers. In my journey/quest to find the truth I read your posts. And I learned a lot from you. My dear brothers, I appreciate your efforts for the online Quranic community. You have been an inspiration to all of us. But I digress. So let's get back to the topic of this thread.

I think it's amazing that Ibn Khaldun described the concept/theory of evolution 400 years before Darwin. In my view, islamic scientists/scholars left a great/fantastic legacy of literary and scientific accomplishments.

By the way, I have written a post on FreeMinds where I have shared some of my thoughts regarding the theory of evolution. Some of you might be interested in reading it. So I'd like to share a link my post here.

@ Hiroshi, perhaps someday you could play soccer with him.
